Leaf Sorting Activity: Kindergarten Science Projects This Leaf Sorting lesson pack can help you to deliver the National Curriculum (or other Science curriculum for ages 5 to 6) for Science in Year 1. It is best carried out in autumn as the leaves fall, but can also be done in spring as new leaves emerge and children's interest in them can be excited. The Leaf Sorting Activity includes References to the relevant parts of the National Curriculum (but the activity does not have to be used in conjunction with the UK National Curriculum ). * 12 pictures of varying leaves, suitable for sorting according to vein pattern, formation and leaf properties (e.g. prickly/rounded edges, deep cut edges etc..) - in two sizes for whole class/group use or display. * a My Leaf recording worksheet * a sheet of 12 small pictures to sort, cut out and stick. How to sort leaves Leaves can be sorted according to several different factors. Sort by one property at a time. Edge - wavy, prickly, jagged, sharp etc… (let the children suggest ideas) Veins: One ‘spine’ vein with branches (many leaves) Like umbrella spokes (Nasturtium) Several main veins coming from base of leaf, with branches from each (Sycamore) Feel/look: soft, hairy, sharp, prickly, smooth, rough, tough, shiny etc… Colour: shade of green in spring/summer, or autumn colours (red, orange, brown, yellow etc…) Can the children find: All the prickly leaves? All the deeply notched leaves? All the leaves with leaflets? All the soft leaves? Etc… Children may dispute whether a leaf falls into a category or not. Use this as valuable discussion, always securing a good reason for their thinking. How to use the activity Class sorting: Let individual children hold up to 5 large leaf pictures. Can the children see two leaves that might match and say how they match? Now can they see if any other leaves fit that group - hold up the other leaf pictures one by one and see if they fit, passing the picture to another child to join the group, if that leaf fits. Does this leaf have …? Try sorting by various properties before letting the children take a leaf to sketch and describe on the ‘My leaf’ sheet. Group sorting: A small group of children can be challenged to find a way of sorting the leaves so that as many of them as possible are in a group. Or, more simply: Can you find the leaves that are pointed/sharp/have leaflets, are soft etc… Children can then be given the sheet of small leaves to sort in the way the teacher outlines. More! The time before the holidays can get a little crazy in the classroom. Students are ready for a break and teachers are too! Keep your class engaged with EIGHT Days of math review! The ACTIVITIES are suitable for 5th grade and 6th grade. They are great for easy and fast sub plans. I use them as an 'end of the day carrot' that my students look forward to. They can't leave for the day without getting a step closer to finding Santa so it helps them to stay focused throughout the day so that we have time for the fun activity at the end of the day. One of the best parts: NO PREP required! This is not only great for distance learning but also great if you have run out of copies for the month and need a digital version fast... or if you just forget to make your copies for the week. (It's happened to me! - too. many things to keep track of) The pages do print beautiful in color and black and white if you have the time, but don't fret if you don't. Just assign it on Google Classroom - directions included. If you haven't taught the topic yet, it is a great mini lesson and if you have taught it, it can act as a review. This project allows students to apply their knowledge of perimeter, area, volume, and decimal calculations to a realistic and creative situation. They are tasked with designing a new park that includes areas for swimming, playing (skate park, playground, and grass), eating, and walking. They use their knowledge of perimeter when considering the size and shape of their park and the amount of fencing required. Every student is assigned the same perimeter. This constraint ensures your students can accurately calculate perimeter, it makes some of the marking easier for you, and it will help stimulate a discussion about the relationship between perimeter and area. Although all the perimeters are the same, the areas of your students' parks can be vastly different depending on the shape chosen! They use their knowledge of area when dividing the park up into sections for different activities. An understanding of volume is used when considering filling the pool. Finally, they use their knowledge of decimal calculations when determining the final price of the entire project. Each different section has a different cost (unit rate). For example, paths are much cheaper than a playground, and grassy areas cost less than a swimming pool. I asked my students to calculate by hand, but you could allow yours to use a calculator as well. This project requires students to use creative and logical thinking skills, organization, careful calculating methods, and neat drawing/colouring. It is a great project to use as a summative assessment or to show parents at conferences. Grades to Use With: This math project could work in grades 4-8 in regular math classes. Here’s a ready-to-go math inquiry activity for your geometry unit. Students are tasked with drawing all the rectangles they can create with a specific area (24 units squared). Then, they calculate the perimeter of each rectangle. Finally, a prompt helps them notice the relationship between area and perimeter. Shapes that are longer and thinner will have a larger perimeter than other shapes with the same area. How to Use: Use this activity once your students have already had some practice calculating area and perimeter of rectangles. You could do a quick mini lesson about finding factors before handing out this activity , as your students need to determine the factors of 24 to complete this task (1x24, 2x12, 3x8 4x6). I let students work in pairs or small groups to complete this task as I want them talking about their math ideas! Grades to Use With: This math project is designed for students in grades 3-6 who are learning about area and perimeter of right-angle shapes (rectangles). It is designed to address the Common Core State Standards 6.G.A.2 and 6.G.A.4: Finding volume and surface area and drawing nets. Students will: Determine how many faces there are on a compound three dimensional shape (including a rectangular prism & a triangular prism). Sketch the faces/create a net on the grid provided (one face includes a fractional length of ½ inch). Use a table to help calculate the surface area of all of the faces. Calculate the volume of this compound shape using a table to organize the information. Answer the provided discussion questions. These are provided to get students thinking about the concepts of geometry and include the questions: Explain why you didn’t calculate the area of the base of the doghouse. If each container of paint covers 200 inches², how many containers should you buy? Why would it be useful to know the volume of the doghouse? Students are also asked about the formulae for volume of a rectangular prism and triangular prism. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed to target Common Core State Standards for 6th grade geometry. It could also be used for enrichment in 5th grade, review in 7th or 8th grades, or in a high school special education classroom.
