Map Activity: Europeans Come to North America
Social Studies, History, History: World, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
This mapping activity introduces students to the land claims made by European countries around the 1700s. There are total of 7 questions that students are expected to answer using the map. This is great of review and/or as an introduction to a unit. Ready to print - no prep. The European exploration of the Americas refers to the period of exploration and colonization by various European powers in the Americas, starting in the late 15th century and continuing into the 19th century. This era of exploration had a profound impact on the history, culture, and development of the Americas. Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer sailing under the Spanish crown, is often credited with initiating the European exploration of the Americas. In 1492, he reached the Caribbean islands, believing he had reached the eastern coast of Asia. Columbus's voyages sparked a wave of exploration by other European powers, primarily Spain and Portugal. The Spanish, led by figures like Hernán Cortés and Francisco Pizarro, explored and conquered vast territories in Central and South America. They established colonies and exploited the region's resources, particularly gold and silver. The Spanish Empire became one of the wealthiest and most powerful in the world. The Portuguese, led by explorers such as Vasco da Gama and Pedro Álvares Cabral, focused their efforts on establishing trading routes to Asia by sailing around the southern tip of Africa. However, they also claimed significant territories in South America, including Brazil. Other European powers, such as England, France, and the Netherlands, also sought to establish colonies and expand their influence in the Americas. English explorers like John Cabot and Sir Walter Raleigh ventured to North America, while French explorers, including Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain, explored and settled parts of present-day Canada. The Dutch established colonies in what is now New York and other areas along the eastern coast of North America. The European exploration of the Americas led to the establishment of permanent colonies, the introduction of European diseases that devastated native populations, and the transatlantic slave trade, which forcibly brought millions of Africans to the Americas to work on plantations and in mines. The colonization and exploitation of the Americas by European powers had far-reaching consequences, including the reshaping of indigenous cultures, the establishment of new political and economic systems, and the eventual independence movements that led to the formation of modern nation-states in the Americas. It's important to note that the European exploration of the Americas was not a single, unified endeavor. Different European powers had different goals, methods, and interactions with indigenous peoples. The history of this period is complex and multifaceted, involving numerous explorers, conquistadors, and colonizers, each contributing to the overall narrative of European exploration and colonization in the Americas.

Lifestyle Creep: Personal Financial Literacy Lesson about Spending Carefully This engaging personal finance lesson highlights the key principle of successful financial planning - 'Always spend less than you earn!'. It demonstrates financial concepts through practical and relatable examples, including a comparison between a high-income earner and lower-income earner: you might be surprised who is doing better financially! How to Use: First, a handout introduces two characters- Raya, who earns $5000 monthly but saves $50 each month; contrasted with Lucien, an affluent lawyer who makes $20,000 monthly but overspends by $50 each month. These personas bring vital insights into the consequences of prudent versus extravagant financial habits over time. Next. the concept of "Lifestyle Creep" is introduced. It is when your standard of living permanently increases when your income does: things that used to be luxuries become everyday expectations. For example, acquiring new ski gear prompts related expenses like annual ski passes or one-time investments like car ski rack installations. Then, students brainstorm common items of Lifestyle Creep that Lucien may have incorporated into his daily expectations. Finally, they practice noticing and calculating Lifestyle Creep with two real world examples: moving to a bigger apartment or adopting a pet. A complete answer key is also included to eliminate any guesswork! Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for high school students in grades 8-12 in Career and Personal Planning, finance, applied math, life skills, or high school special education classes. It could also be used for grade 7 enrichment. What's Included: This ready-to-go lesson is an easy to print PDF that includes a two-page handout, two pages of practice activities, and an answer key. John Dalton – A Short Introduction to a Key Figure in Chemistry Informational Text, Student Tasks & Digital Quiz (PDF + H5P) 🧪📘 A printable and digital resource for grades 7–10 This material introduces students to John Dalton, best known for his early atomic theory and his work on gases. The text is kept simple and clear, making it easy to integrate into lessons on the history of chemistry or atomic structure. It’s especially useful when you want to combine reading comprehension with scientific content. I’ve used this type of material when I needed something structured but flexible – for example, during quiet lesson phases, independent study, or even in a substitute teaching situation. It’s straightforward enough to use without much prep, and students can usually work through it on their own or in pairs. Here’s what’s included: A short reading passage about John Dalton A worksheet where students fill out a basic profile of him Quiz questions to check understanding (with solutions) Two optional follow-up tasks: – Write your own questions about the text – Swap and answer a partner’s questions Available in three formats: – PDF (print-friendly) – Editable .docx (text only) – H5P version for interactive use without images In the classroom: The material works well for independent work or as part of a science station. Students start with the reading text, complete the profile, and then move on to the quiz questions. The optional tasks are a nice way to extend the activity, especially if some students finish early. The H5P version is useful if you’re working in a digital setting or want to offer students the chance to check their answers right away. It’s a calm, focused lesson component that helps students learn about an important scientific thinker – without needing complicated prep or background knowledge. Have fun exploring the world of science with your students! Warmly, Lernfitness Did You Know?
