Breaking the Big Words is a syllable activity series that scaffolds students through patterns like V/CV, bossy R syllables, and words with 2-3 syllables. This volume uses visual supports to foster independence with the break-and-read strategy. Students first break unfamiliar words into syllables, then insert slashes between syllables. As a final step, they break syllables while reading sentences. With success, supports are removed. Teachers can further generalize the strategy by having students break words while reading leveled texts.
