Teaching tips

Read the directions aloud one at a time with younger classes; each is a yes-or-no question about the student, so the class can answer and color in step together.
Eleven colors are named across the code — red, blue, orange, yellow, pink, green, light blue, light green, black, purple and brown — so check the crayon or pencil sets include the light blue and light green pair before starting.
Read the finished butterflies back as a class tally: counting how many students turned their B letters red shows at a glance how many plan to spend the summer outdoors.
The closing direction leaves the remaining areas to free choice, which gives faster students somewhere to keep working while the rest finish the coded parts.
