Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Students identify and select an appropriate calming strategy, such as mindful breathing or taking a break, from the poster's nine visual options when they feel upset.

Teaching tips

  • Post it at eye level in a designated calm corner or quiet space so students can reference it independently.

  • Introduce each of the nine strategies explicitly before relying on the poster, so students recognize the icons and know how to actually do each one, such as what 'mindful breathing' looks like.

  • Pair the poster with a related routine, such as a visual timer, when a student chooses the 'take a break' option.

Skills covered

  • Self-regulation strategy selection — students choose from nine visual coping options such as mindful breathing, yoga, or coloring.

  • Independent help-seeking — students recognize 'ask for help' as one of the poster's listed strategies.
