Middle School Math Stations or Centers: Fraction Operations + - x /

Middle School Math Stations or Centers: Fraction Operations + - x /
Math, Addition and Subtraction, Addition, Multiplication and Division, Multiplication, Fractions, Division, Subtraction, Grade 5, 6, 7, Centers, Activities

This ready-to-print set of 5 stations or math centres will supplement a middle school geometry unit about fraction operations: including adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators and multiplying and dividing proper and improper fractions. I have included lots of real-life examples such as recipes, time, and portions of food, along with lots of visual representations and diagrams for the four operations. Math stations are an excellent way to get students engaged as they move about the room and work cooperatively with their peers. Even when students are in intermediate grades, they benefit from a variety of teaching strategies including the use of stations to make math class more interactive. Station 1: Students solve four word problems using fraction operations. I encourage them to also draw diagrams to help where applicable. (optional: set out white boards for students to use) Station 2: Students play a fraction dice game to practice adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Extension: they can use improper fractions for an extra challenge. (supplies needed: 6- or 10-sided dice and 2-sided counters) Station 3: Students work with fractions to double a real recipe. Station 4: Students show multiplication and division of fractions visually to enhance understanding. (optional: laptops or tablets for online game extension) Station 5: Students extend their learning by working collaboratively to explain their thinking about dividing fractions in a math journal entry (using pictures, numbers, and words). ***Answer Key Included*** Grades to Use With: These stations are designed for middle grades students (grades 5-7) or high school special education classrooms. If you enjoy these math stations, check out the others in my store for your middle school math class: Factors and Multiples Percent, Decimals. Fractions Adding and Subtracting Integers Early Algebra Concepts Area, Perimeter, and Volume (right-angle shapes) Ratios and Rates Geometry: Triangles, Area, Angles Statistics and Probability Place Value

Force and Motion Science Experiment

Force and Motion Science Experiment
Science, Physics, Grade 3, 4, 5, Experiments, Activities

We all know that science is learned best with our hands! When we have the opportunity to really explore scientific concepts with an interactive approach, the learning just sticks! More than that, students love the chance to do experiments . This is a Force and Motion Science Experiment for your students to take part in. It may be used best with 3rd – 5th grade students. Students will work with a set of balls to apply what they know about force and motion. Students will complete the 2 page printable along the way. They will begin by making a hypothesis, as scientists do, before engaging in the experiment. Students will hypothesize which ball they believe will need the most wind-force for motion and which ball will need the least wind-force. You may choose to have your students decide on this hypothesis individually or in small groups. When students have wrapped up their hypothesis, they will move forward into the experiment portion. Students will follow the directions on page 1 to test out the force and motion of each ball. There is space for them to test out 6 balls. Your class may love completing this in small groups or with a partner. On page 2, they will reflect on the experiment by writing their particular outcome and formulating a conclusion about the wind-force needed to put balls in motion. I hope you enjoy!
