Quadrilaterals Activity
Math, Geometry, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Activities
This fun frame activity is perfect for teaching 3rd graders the concept of quadrilaterals. It would also be great as a review for 4th graders. Quadrilaterals can be a difficult concept for students to grasp. This fun activity helps students differentiate the attributes of different shapes. Students will use the frame to put shapes in different categories. Those categories are shapes that 4 right angles, shapes where the opposite sides have an equal length, shapes where the opposite sides are parallel, and shapes that have 4 equal sides. There also is a spot for students to show the shape that doesn't fit any of the attributes. There are two options for completing this activity. Students could cut out the given shapes and glue them in the correct section of the frame. Or, you could have students draw the shapes themselves. This can be more difficult with younger students. My example would help you see how it could be completed.

Here is a fun, low-prep science experiment for your middle grades class! It's perfect for a Friday afternoon, day before a holiday, or as part of your regular science curriculum . Students will have a chance to experiment with simple, everyday materials to learn about a science concept in a hands-on manner. They will have to make a prediction before completing the experiment and draw a detailed and labelled diagram after they are done. They will also define relevant vocabulary words and answer a question about what they learned. Falling Slowly: This deceptively simple task asks students to use a piece of paper to design an item that falls as slowly as possible when dropped from a height of 2m. They may be surprised to see that a tiny ripped piece of paper is often the best design! Discussions about gravity and the natural design of helicopter seeds could follow. Student Instructions: You must try to design a paper object that falls as slowly as possible when dropped from 2m. Fold, cut, tear your paper however you want. Test different designs. How to Use: Students can work in small groups. Go over the instructions and materials and give students time to predict before they start the experiment. Review the findings and relevant vocabulary after students have completed their experiment and diagram. Grades to Use With: This activity is great for middle grades (4-7) classrooms or high school special education classes. Stress Management Game played like Apples To Apples-Handouts
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Special Education Needs (SEN), Social Skills, Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, Activities, Games
In this fun game, played similarly to the Apples To Apples game, students will read different stressful situations and choose a strategy they would use for that situation. There are 18 situation cards and 36 strategy cards. Each player draws 5 strategy cards (they do not show the other players which cards they have). The "judge" will draw a situation card and show the other players the card after reading the situation. For example, "You don't know the answers when taking a test." Then the other players will choose a strategy card they would use for that situation and place it face down to near the judge. The judge will read the different strategy cards and choose which one they would most likely choose. Important to convey to students: There is no "wrong" strategy, just a strategy that the judge would most likely use. Then for the next round, a different person is the judge and the game continues. the discarded strategy cards can get placed under the strategy pile. the person whose strategy was chosen, gets the situation card and also gets one point. This is a fun and engaging way to get students talking about different strategies they would use for stress management as well as different types of stressful situations they can manage if they need to. In this resource you will also be getting 2 mindful coloring handouts. This is a great way to finish the lesson after the game. I also like to begin this lesson by introducing a Brain Pop on stress. You can also choose a short video of your choice or a book about stress to prime the students' brains about what stress is, possible triggers of stress and how to cope with stress. Then the game can be played and can reinforce the topic.
