Here's a ready to go activity for students in 6th grade math class. They will collect numerical data and create their own dot plots and histograms to display their findings! This gives them a sense of ownership over their learning, and it is a great way to assess their skills! Student Instructions: Step 1: Think of a question with 6-8 numerical answer options. For example: ‘How many siblings do you have’ could include the answers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5+ ‘How long does it take you to get to school’ could include 0-10 mins, 10-20 mins, 20-30 mins, 30-40 mins, 40-50 mins, 50-60 mins, and 1hr+ Step 2: Survey at least 20 people. Record each answer with a tally mark in the right column. Step 3: Turn your data set into a dot plot (using the provided template). Step 4: Turn your data set into a histogram (using the provided template). Step 5: Reflect on the process by answering discussion questions and self-assessing your skills. The Tuskegee Airmen

The Tuskegee Airmen is a fifth-grade Level Q book, showcasing the role of Black aviators who fought during WWII after overcoming racism to serve our country. During four years (1942-1946), nearly 1,000 pilots completed training at Tuskegee Army Airfield in Tuskegee, Alabama. Many of these successful pilots went on to serve our country in other leadership capacities after the Civil War. Your students will see the instrumental role that First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt played in gathering support for their training. Students will also learn more about the Tuskegee Airmen’s role in fighting the Germans during this important time in history and how the Black airmen were finally able to be integrated into the military forces. What’s Included 4-page informational text with targeted vocabulary and concepts, and 2 pages of activities that reinforce critical thinking and language arts skills. The National Council for Social Studies’ key learning strands involving Culture and Change; Time, Continuity, and Change; and Power can be applied to this resource. The Perspective Taking skill of Motive and Intent can be an especially difficult skill for children with social learning challenges. These children may benefit from explicit instruction to understand what Motive and Intent is, in order to better navigate their social world with less misinterpretations. Area and Perimeter Digital Activity is a great resource to have students practice finding the area and perimeter of shapes without using any paper. This area and perimeter google slide activity allows students to answer the questions right away by dragging-and-dropping the answer and filling in the blanks. Included: Area and perimeter (find by counting blocks) Area (find by multiplying length x width) Measure and find the perimeter (a ruler is included on the slide and you might have to instruct your students not to resize the ruler, but rotate as necessary) Shapes vary from regular and irregular polygons Students are asked to either match the area and perimeter to a shape or type in the respected area or perimeter You can assign this Google Slide on Schoology, Google Classroom, Canvas, or whatever LMS your school uses.
