Camping Budget Project: Gr 5-8 Budget Worksheet Personal Finance

Camping Budget Project: Gr 5-8 Budget Worksheet Personal Finance
Life Studies, Home Economics, Money, Math, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Activities, Projects

Here’s an engaging, summer-themed, real-world math budget project for your middle grades students (in grades 5-8). The math project incorporates useful personal finance and financial literacy skills along with realistic budgeting. Each student in your class is going to plan their purchases for a summer camping trip with friends! How to Use: You will assign each student in your class a budget (I recommend between $400-$1,750). A $400 budget will be challenging, and the student might only be able to bring one friend and buy mainly low-cost items. On the other hand, a $1,750 budget will be much more luxurious, and that student will be able to more friends and choose many fancy items. Students work within their budgets, picking a low, middle, or high-cost choice for each category (tent, sleeping bag, cooler chairs, food and more). Certain items must be multiplied by the total number of campers while others (like a stove) do not. Students will add up their eleven choices and make sure they stay within their budget. They might need to make a few trade-offs and skip desired items to ensure they have the things they can't camp without. Finally, your students will calculate how much money they have left, and they will answer reflection questions shopping within a budget, earning more money, or buying things used. What's Included: 5 Page PDF It's Ready to Print and Go! - Title page/teacher instructions - 2 page budgeting worksheet: This includes all of the item choices and their prices. - 1 page reflection: This is a great way to start a class discussion about budgeting- an important life skill. - COMPLETE ANSWER KEY that includes a completed sample budget so you know exactly how to assess this project Math skills required: - adding, subtracting, and multiplying with whole numbers (up to the thousands): no decimals! This project could also be a great addition to a high school life skills classroom!

The Southern Colonies in North America, a classroom skit

The Southern Colonies in North America, a classroom skit
Social Studies, History, History: USA, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities

This play complements the other plays I have on TeachSimple about the colonial era in American History. You can also find the Life in the Middle Colonies and Life in the New England Colonies plays here. My 7th graders have enjoyed these for years. However, these work well for all grades between 6th and 12th. History comes alive in the classroom when students are using plays and skits. Reader's Theater is a great way to enhance any lesson, including the southern colonies, either to introduce some of the characteristics of this region or reinforce what you have been teaching. There are four roles in this play. It will take about 15-20 minutes to complete. Although the play was created by me it is based on an actual historical figure of that time - Henry Middleton and the Middleton family. The Middleton Plantation still exists in the Charleston area in South Carolina. The gardens he started are still there. All of my skits are written to engage students and get them thinking. This is what I call a "lesson enhancer". It will help add to any lesson on life in the southern English provinces.

Smart Cookie Game-Part 2 (2022 Version)

Smart Cookie Game-Part 2 (2022 Version)
Special Resources, Social Skills, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Games

In this Smart Cookie game (2022 version), students try and race each other to be the first one to guess the answer based on one at a time clues after one at a time clicks via Presentation mode on Google Slides. This is based on the wildly popular game Smart A** but more applicable and relevant to elementary-high schoolers. I have included many references to popular t.v. shows and famous people the students born after 2001 would know. This is a trivial pursuit-like game but more fun and students feel more successful. It is just for fun and perfect for Zoom, an ice breaker or indoor recess but they might even learn something! There are 3 categories; Who Am I?, Where Am I?, and What Am I? There are 42 slides for each category. Use in Presentation mode for your class. There are answer sheets at the end for each card so the Game Leader can reference quickly and keep track of the cards used. This is in PowerPoint so the completed cards will turn black after being used for easy game play. In this new 2022 version there are all new cards for each category!

Correlation Does Not Equal Causation: Scientific Method and Critical Thinking Lesson for Middle Grades or High School
Social Studies, History, Psychology, Science, Basic Science, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Experiments, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

The package includes handouts, notes, diagrams , practice questions, a review, and answer key. How to Use: Print a 7 page package for each of your students. Present pages 1-4 on an interactive whiteboard and teach your students the basics of correlation (scatterplots, positive correlation, negative correlation, correlation coefficients, mistaking correlation as causation, media examples, reverse causation, third variables, etc.) as they fill in questions and notes. Then, students can do the practice questions on their own or in small groups (answer key included). Next, present page 6 to explain how to actually find causation in a true experiment : random selection, random assignment, dependent variable, independent variable, experimental group, control group, etc. Finally, students complete a one-page review (answer key included) Grades to Use With: This lesson was designed to be accessible to students as young as grade six all the way through high school. It could be an addition to a science unit about experimental methods, a science fair unit, a grade 8 math unit about scatter plots, or even a psychology class. Standards: CCSS8.SP.A.1 Construct and interpret scatter plots for bivariate measurement data to investigate patterns of association between two quantities. Describe patterns such as clustering, outliers, positive or negative association, linear association, and nonlinear association. CCSS8.SP.A.2 Know that straight lines are widely used to model relationships between two quantitative variables. For scatter plots that suggest a linear association, informally fit a straight line, and informally assess the model fit by judging the closeness of the data points to the line.
