COLORS IN THE AMAZON RAINFOREST BOOK AND ACTIVITIES

Take your Pre-K and kindergarten learners on a journey through the Amazon rainforest with this fun-filled set of activities. There’s something for all types of learners as they focus on colors and animal adaptations in the rainforest biome. They’ll begin their journey with an engaging mini-book that tells about 10 rainforest animals. Created with beginning readers in mind, the story offers repetitive sentences, sight words, and colorful graphics. On each page learners will also be introduced to adjectives describing adaptations of each animal. Afterwards, each learner will have the opportunity to personalize their own book. This is a great way for them to build connections with learning and practice their reading skills with family and friends. Next, they’ll move on to several hands-on activities where they will strengthen foundational fine motor skills through tracing, cutting, gluing, manipulating modeling dough, and pretending to feed a baby hummingbird using a pipette. Along with those skills, your learners will practice concepts such as counting, writing, identifying color words, sorting, patterns, and following directions. Each activity was designed to meet current educational standards while highlighting the unique characteristics of animals such as the pink river dolphin, harpy eagle, black caiman, leaf-cutter ant, and red-eyed tree frog. You will note the STEM activities require specific materials, many of which can be found in your own teacher treasure trove or borrowed from teacher friends. While the craftivities do require initial prep work, they will add color to your educational environment. What’s more, your learners will take pride in seeing their masterpieces displayed during your rainforest themed unit. The books and many of the activities are available in both color and black & white versions. An answer key is also provided for worksheets. Below you will find a list of details found within the pages of this product. BOOKS: Two versions of “Take a Look!” – one a basic read-along, the other an interactive read-along. STEM: Activity 1: learners will estimate the number of blue morpho butterfly eggs that will fit on various sized leaves and place eggs (pony beads) on said leaves to show visual representation. Activity 2: learners will use modeling clay to build an anthill to house an estimated number of leaf-cutter ants that will fit inside their home. Activity 3: learners will use a pipette to feed the baby hummingbird an estimated number of nectar (colored water) droplets. Activity 4: learners will use Zoobs (anacondas) to create various types of lines and 2-D shapes. CRAFTIVITIES: #1: learners will cut leaves and glue them to the leaf-cutter anthill. #2: learners will create a red-eyed tree frog prop to use in conjunction with a short rhyme teaching about the animal’s unique adaptation. #3: learners will add color to a blue morpho butterfly template and then affix eye dots (white stickers) to the butterfly, giving it protection from predators WORKSHEETS: #1: reading comprehension, color word identification #2: color word identification, coloring #3: comparing items that are and are not sharp #4: sorting rainforest animals by the way they move (fly, walk, swim) #5: number identification, 1-to-1 correspondence, painting #6: pink river dolphin life cycle, color word identification, coloring #7: opinion writing using a prompt, drawing/coloring #8: map skills, connect the dots, coloring, drawing #9: tracing, writing, painting #10: drawing, coloring, writing #11: identifying an AB pattern, completing the pattern, drawing an AB pattern #12: following directions, color word identification, drawing, coloring

Shape Outlines Included: circle, crescent, diamond, heart, hexagon, pentagon, octagon, oval, rectangle, rhombus, square, star, triangle, trapezoid Types of Mats Included: The first set of mats has only the shape centered on a full 8.5X11 sheet of printer paper. The second set of mats features the shape with the shape name at the top of the page. The third set of mats features the shape with the shape name at the bottom of the page. The shape name is traceable on this mat. Each mat features thick, bold lines, making them easy to see and to use for craft templates or manipulative mats. These shape outlines will allow students to have fun, be creative, and stay engaged with learning basic 2D shapes. Ways to Use: Craft Templates - The mats are perfect for crafts. The teacher needs to add the desired craft material for students to fill in each shape. Bulletin Board Shapes - The teacher (or students) can cut out the shapes to include on a bulletin board, or teachers can use the finish crafts as a display. Manipulative Mats - The shape mats can be used in several ways as manipulative mats. They can be used to sort objects by shape, or students can use stickers or mini erasers to line the edges of each shape. Playdough Mats - Students can use playdough to build each shape by placing the dough around the perimeter of the shape or by filling the area of the shape with playdough.
