Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Identify words that require capitalization, including names of people, place names and holidays.

  • Select the sentence with correct end punctuation from three options (period, question mark, or exclamation mark).

  • Apply capital letters to the first word of a sentence.

Teaching tips

  • Project one question slide at a time and have students vote on the correct option before moving to the next slide.

  • Use the repeated question set partway through the deck as a second, spaced review pass rather than new content.

  • Print the closing answer-recording page so each student has a place to mark responses to all 15 questions.

Skills covered

  • Proper-noun capitalization โ€” students pick out place names, people's names and holidays that need a capital letter (e.g., "ohio," "christmas").

  • Sentence-initial capitalization โ€” students choose the version of a sentence where the first word is correctly capitalized.

  • End punctuation selection โ€” students choose between a period, question mark and exclamation mark for a given sentence.

Good to know

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Are the questions in the review section the same as the earlier ones, or different?

Identical. The deck repeats the same fifteen capitalization-and-punctuation items partway through as a second review pass rather than introducing new questions.

Which grammar issues beyond capitalization and punctuation show up in the quiz?

A few items also test sentence correctness more broadly, asking students to pick the option free of verb-tense or subject-verb agreement errors, such as choosing "Pack some supplies" over "I have went skiing before."
