Perimeter Worksheets: Perimeter of Regular & Irregular Polygons Game
Math, Geometry, Measurements, Grade 4, 5, 6, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Activities, Games
Perimeter of Regular and Irregular Polygons: Math Game Here’s a fun math game that incorporates critical thinking and math strategy. It could be a great addition to your geometry or measurement unit in grades 4-6. Students will practice drawing regular and irregular polygons with given perimeters. They will need to use math skills including addition, division, or knowledge of factors to determine how to make a specific kind of shape with a provided perimeter. This game is ready-to-go! Simply show the two sample rounds to your students to teach them how to play. Then each student needs a six-sided die and the three-page game. Students can play on their own or in small groups where they can share ideas. There are three rounds to play! A question to help students notice the strategy of the game is included. Students should notice that it is easier to make a regular shape if the perimeter is divisible by the number of sides of the shape. For example, to make a regular pentagon with the digits 5 and 1, I would make the perimeter 15 units, so each side could be 3 units long. A bonus question for early finishers is also included. ANSWER: A decagon has 10 sides. So, a regular decagon could easily have a perimeter of 10, 20, 30, 40 units. That could be hard in this game because the die does not have a zero. Grades to Use With: This game is designed for students in grades 4-6 who are learning about perimeter of polygons, regular vs irregular polygons, factors, and division. It's also a great way to practice critical thinking and strategy. What's Included: 6 Page PDF Teacher Instructions 2 Sample Rounds to Teach the Game 3 Pages of Worksheets for your students to play the game three times and answer discussion prompts to encourage critical thinking and strategy.

Triangle Dice Game: Isosceles, Scalene, Equilateral, Right, Acute, Obtuse
Math, Geometry, Measurements, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, Activities, Games
Here's a deceptively simple dice game to practice identifying and creating six kinds of triangles. Three are classified by their angles: acute, right, and obtuse. Three are classified by their side lengths: scalene, equilateral, and isosceles. Use this game to reinforce the definitions of each of these six triangles in a geometry/measurement unit. Students work independently or in small groups. Each player needs two dice. They roll them and use the two numbers as side lengths in centimetres for a triangle. They draw the triangle in one of the boxes on their paper and measure and label the third side length. Here's where the strategy and critical thinking come in. Can students make six kinds of triangles in less than six turns? Maybe! If they get some lucky rolls! For example, if a student gets a roll with two of the same numbers, they should make an isosceles or equilateral triangle (depending on what angles they draw). But this triangle will also be an acute triangle (or an isosceles right triangle). Clever students (with lucky rolls) should be able to complete the task in less than six turns. Standards: CCSS 4.G.A.2 Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles. CCSS 7.G.A.2 Draw (freehand, with ruler and protractor, and with technology) geometric shapes with given conditions. Focus on constructing triangles from three measures of angles or sides, noticing when the conditions determine a unique triangle, more than one triangle, or no triangle. Grades: This game works well in classes from grades 4-7. Ideally students know how to use a ruler and a protractor. Perimeter of Complex Compound or Composite Shapes: Math Geometry Game
Math, Geometry, Measurements, Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, Activities, Games
Here's a no-prep math geometry game that will get your students excited to measure the perimeter of compound shapes (also called complex shapes or composite shapes). It's a simple dice game that actually uses a fair bit of strategy- so your students can start to figure out ways to win as they play more than once. They will be calculating the perimeter of a variety of compound complex or composite shapes. Students can also learn more by calculating the area of the shapes they create throughout the game! A sample round of the game is included to teach it easily to your students! How to Use: 1) Player One picks a starting spot. They roll and draw a line the length of their roll. 2) Player Two begins their turn at the end of Player One’s line. They roll and draw a line the length of their roll. 3) Once the perimeter of the shape is over forty units, the first player to complete the shape wins the game! 4) If you can not close the shape with the rolls given, it will be a tie. 5) BONUS: Both players can calculate the area of the complex compound or composite shape. Grades to Use With: This game is designed for students in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, or 7th grade who are learning about calculating perimeter using whole numbers on a variety of complex compound or composite shapes. It is also a great way to develop strategy skills and even talk about probability (what is the chance I will get the roll I need to complete this shape?).
