Quadrilaterals Activity
Math, Geometry, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Activities

This fun frame activity is perfect for teaching 3rd graders the concept of quadrilaterals. It would also be great as a review for 4th graders. Quadrilaterals can be a difficult concept for students to grasp. This fun activity helps students differentiate the attributes of different shapes. Students will use the frame to put shapes in different categories. Those categories are shapes that 4 right angles, shapes where the opposite sides have an equal length, shapes where the opposite sides are parallel, and shapes that have 4 equal sides. There also is a spot for students to show the shape that doesn't fit any of the attributes. There are two options for completing this activity. Students could cut out the given shapes and glue them in the correct section of the frame. Or, you could have students draw the shapes themselves. This can be more difficult with younger students. My example would help you see how it could be completed.

English months, days, and seasons game - I have...Who has?

English months, days, and seasons game - I have...Who has?
ELA, Language Development, ESL, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, Games, Activities

The English months, days, and seasons game - I have...Who has? This is a unique educational resource aimed at enhancing students' understanding and recognition of the months, days, and seasons in the English language. It offers an easy-to-use learning tool ideal for students between 1st to 8th grade. What's Included? The resource includes a total of 27 cards that can either be handled by individual students or shared among pairs depending on your class size or group. To make them last longer, you could consider printing and laminating these cards for reuse. How Does It Work? The principle behind this game is simple but effective. The journey starts with a card marked 'I'll start the game'. A typical example would be something like 'I have May,' followed by 'Who has Autumn?' The student who has the 'Autumn' card responds appropriately by throwing in their own question like ‘Who has Thursday?’ This back-and-forth continues until all cards are used up, ending with the statement ‘The Game is over!’ Note: For more engaging sessions, divide your class under two teams each armed with a set of these cards. Make it competitive; whoever finishes first wins! Where Can It Be Used? This game isn't confined only to ESL (English as Second Language) classrooms; it fits right into any environment where English is the main spoken language – making it universal! Encourage discussions among learners both within diverse classroom settings or homeschooling environments. Life made simple with essential knowledge just one card away!.

Create-A-Candidate Civics Activity

Create-A-Candidate Civics Activity
Social Studies, Government, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Projects

Genericbury City Election Activity Teacher Guide: Goal Statement: Students will be able to analyze how candidates respond to the needs and wishes of the community in order to become more electable, in order to better understand the relationship between representatives and their voters. 2 to 4 50 Minute Class Periods In this activity , students are wrestling with what it means to be “electable”. They will create a candidate to run against others. This can be assigned as a group assignment (so that 3 or 4 candidates are running against each other in each class), a class assignment (so that each class is constructing one candidate together to run against other sections of the class), or individually (so that each student has the ability to create their own candidate). There are countless extension activities you can do, from holding debates to having the class vote for a candidate other than their own to see who was most convincing. You can also lean into potential “holes” in candidates. For instance, if one group made their candidate a millionaire, maybe that candidate is “out of touch” with regular citizens. If another group made a candidate with 8 kids, maybe they “simply won’t have the time to govern”. There are a handful of sections students will move through. You can provide the candidate packet to students/groups as a digital file or in printed form: 1. Candidate Name 2. Candidate Appearance 3. Candidate Background and Resume 4. Candidate Slogan 5. Campaign Stances 6. Campaign Finances You can assist them in these sections and talk about benefits and drawbacks of each decision. This activity is designed to be non-partisan, which is why it is a local election activity . Try to keep students focused on the 5 “major issues” outlined in the activity . You can use the polling section to help them prioritize various issues. In general this activity can be very fun, and I suggest seeking potential scandals and other events that might happen to the community to spark excitement in the room. This can be a fun activity for students to use their creativity, wit, and sense of humor! With further questions, reach out to me at tristanjbernhard@gmail.com . I prefer to use lessons in my teaching practice that allow my students to become facilitators and active participants in their own learning rather than merely an audience of "my show". I love to create hands- on, interactive activities that really engage my students in the learning process.
