Thanksgiving Math Project
Holiday & Seasonal, Holidays, Thanksgiving, Math, Money, Grade 3, 4, Activities, Projects
Students will plan the perfect Thanksgiving dinner with this Thanksgiving Math Project . This lesson contains two files. This .pdf consists of two versions of the math task: The first is for 3rd graders that are at grade level (or 4th graders that are slightly below). The second is for 4th graders that are at grade level (or 3rd graders that are slightly above). When I do this lesson, I use both versions. My higher 3rd graders take the more difficult version and go work in a small group. My at-grade level students work on the easier version, and we start it whole class, and then they break off into groups, as well. The second file is a PowerPoint of the student instructions and the store items. I added this one in order to make the prices editable, so that you may make them as easy or as difficult as desired. You can also change the amount of money that students start with if you use the PowerPoint. The “At the Store” shopping menu can be printed in color or black and white. I also assign different numbers of guests to each group, in order to keep students working within their groups, and to avoid the groups collaborating with one another. This way, each group has a unique task that they can present at the end of the project. This project should take 2-3 days, depending on the level of your students and whether or not you have the groups share how they each completed their task. This is perfect the week before Thanksgiving break or any time during the month of November. You get to incorporate math and a holiday celebration all at once. Also, I love to have the groups illustrate and label their finished feasts on poster board for their presentations!
