Finding Poetry in Primary Source Prose

Finding Poetry in Primary Source Prose
Social Studies, ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Literature, Poetry, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,

The writer, Annie Dillard, has said that turning a text into a poem doubles that poem's context."The original meaning remains intact, but now it swings between two poles." The 35-page packet, Finding Poetry in Primary Source Prose, offers teachers another entry point into analyzing and interpreting primary source documents through creating Found Poetry. This packet can easily be used in Literature classes as well as History classes. Although this lesson is written as a group project for presentation, it is easy to modify it so that individual students can create their own found poems. Many teachers are not exactly comfortable teaching students how to write poetry, and/or they haven’t considered the power that poetry writing can add to a History or Social Studies curriculum or a novel unit or narrative nonfiction unit in Language Arts. Found Poetry is an easy way to engage students in difficult primary sources, enhance their understanding of the text, the event or experience, the time period, etc., and can help them access deeper levels of comprehension, analysis, and creativity. The Found Poems students write, whether in groups or individually, offer unique and often profound interpretations. Learning Targets: I can understand, analyze, and interpret a challenging primary source document. I can write a found poem from a primary source historical document. I can apply the elements of poetry to my found poem by looking for vivid images, interesting ideas, words, phrases, and sentences that evoke strong reactions and feelings I can work collaboratively and cooperatively with my group to create and present our poem. I can reflect on my own experience and my experience of working in a group to analyze a primary source document and create a found poem and present it. Create-A-Summer Vacation Narrative Writing Challenge

Create-A-Summer Vacation Narrative Writing Challenge
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. Summer might be around the corner, or perhaps the kids in your life need some inspiration for writing during the summer months. By choosing activities, foods, trips, and goals for the summer, this activity will get them thinking (and avoid any comments about being bored)! Including the appropriate sequence of events, as well as a conflict is key. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing. STANDARDS: Meets CCSS Writing standards for grades 2-5. Don't forget to check out the Chef's Toolbox, Superhero's Toolbox, and Astronaut's Toolbox activities for more fun! These activities can be used with a whole class in addition to the writing challenge printable. This printable is optimal for 2nd-5th graders who enjoy reading, watching, and dreaming about superheroes. By using the included matrix to choose the color scheme, superpower, and mission, they'll enjoy the freedom afforded them to create something they love. BONUS: Take advantage of the 4 extension activity ideas included in this printable. These activities will take their writing beyond the page and bring it to life in STEAM-supported outlets. What you'll get: a 4 page PDF including instructions, extension activity ideas, and 3 student pages. One of these pages is simply writing space for you to print off as many copies as you need based on the amount your students are writing. You'll also find the editing checklist to prompt students to edit their own work for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

In the television series "America: The Story of Us," the westward expansion of the United States is a significant theme covered in the depiction of American history. Here are some key aspects of westward expansion as portrayed in the series: Louisiana Purchase: The series highlights the acquisition of the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803, doubling the size of the United States. It explores President Thomas Jefferson's vision of expanding American territory and the Lewis and Clark expedition that explored and documented the newly acquired lands. Manifest Destiny: The concept of Manifest Destiny, the belief that it was America's destiny to expand westward, is addressed in the series. It depicts the idea of spreading American culture, democracy, and civilization across the continent. Oregon Trail: The series covers the arduous journey of pioneers along the Oregon Trail in the 19th century. It portrays the challenges, dangers, and hardships faced by those seeking a better life in the western territories. California Gold Rush: The series explores the impact of the discovery of gold in California in 1848. It depicts the influx of people from all over the world seeking fortune and the transformative effects the gold rush had on the region. Transcontinental Railroad: The construction of the transcontinental railroad is depicted as a major engineering feat and a significant catalyst for westward expansion. The series showcases the labor-intensive and often dangerous work involved in connecting the eastern and western printables/parts-of-and-anatomy-of">parts of the United States. Native American Conflicts: The series addresses the conflicts between Native American tribes and the advancing settlers as the United States expanded westward. It portrays the displacement and mistreatment of Native Americans and the impacts of these conflicts on both sides. Homesteading and Settlement: The series showcases the Homestead Act of 1862, which offered free land to settlers willing to develop and cultivate it. It explores the challenges and opportunities faced by homesteaders as they established farms and communities in the West. Industrialization and Resource Extraction: The series examines the exploitation of natural resources, such as timber, minerals, and oil, as the United States expanded westward. It explores the growth of industries and the impact on the environment and indigenous populations. While "America: The Story of Us" provides an overview of westward expansion, it is important to note that the series is a docudrama and may simplify or omit certain aspects of the historical narrative. For a more comprehensive understanding of westward expansion, it is recommended to consult additional sources and perspectives. These twenty-two movie questions are aimed at helping your students focus during the video. They are are in chronological order and easy to answer. Enjoy! Thumbnail Clipart Credit: By Prince Padania

5 Minute Games Bundle: Super Simple No-Prep Games for Elementary Students (ELA & Math)

5 Minute Games Bundle: Super Simple No-Prep Games for Elementary Students (ELA & Math)
ELA, Math, Early Math, Place Value, Grammar, Language Development, Vocabulary, Spelling, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Activities, Games

Here are four super quick, no-prep games for any elementary classroom from grade 2 through 6. The games address topics including math, syllables, spelling, rhyme, parts of speech, vocabulary, geography, & critical and creative thinking. Each of the 4 games has its own page of instructions including the skills taught, different player configurations, rules, a sample round, and extension ideas. These games require NO PREP and NO MATERIALS other than writing implements. I suggest whiteboards to save paper. Grades to Use With: These games can be used in almost any elementary classroom (grades 2-6). They are great for the following uses: - Morning/home-room warm-up - TOC back-up activities - To fill the 5 minutes before lunch or the end of the day - As a reward for small-group or one-to-one tutoring The four games are: - 4 Letter Word Game : Start with a 4-letter word on the paper/whiteboard. Players/teams take turns changing one letter at a time to make a new English word. Play until you are stuck or time runs out. - Guess My Number Game : Start with a range based on your students (ex: 1-20 for K, 1-100 for Gr 1-4, 1-200 for Gr 5-7). The teacher (or student if playing in pairs) thinks of a number in that range. The other student (or whole class) has exactly 5 questions of greater than or less than to narrow it down. After 5 questions, they must guess the number. - The Rhyme Game : Start with a word that has many rhymes. (For example: tent, rant, king, see, you.) Do NOT choose duck for obvious reasons. Each student (or each team) has two minutes to make a list of as many rhyming words as they can. Points are counted based on syllables. The longer the word, the more points. After two minutes, tally the scores to find the winner. - Categories: Start by writing 5 categories from the following options on the board: animals, cities, verbs, fruits, toys, pet names, countries, adjectives, beverages, colours, holidays, vehicles, movies, kitchen tools, flowers, books. Then choose one letter of the alphabet. Students get two minutes to think of a word for each category staring with that letter. What's Included: 5 page PDF: Title Page and 4 single-page game instructions

"The Hero of the French and Indian War – Major Robert Rogers" - A History Play

"The Hero of the French and Indian War – Major Robert Rogers" - A History Play
Social Studies, History, History: World, Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, Activities

I use this interactive play to introduce someone to my students who is largely forgotten in American History. His name is Major Robert Rogers. Rogers is one of the big heroes for the British and Americans during the French and Indian War. He was a living legend in his time. In this play I have included printables /parts-of-and-anatomy-of">parts of his life during the French and Indian War including two of the most well-known events - his escape from capture in the Second Battle of Snowshoes and his raid on St. Francis. Rogers and his "Rangers" accomplished many tasks thought to be too difficult or outright impossible, but these two cemented his status as hero and legend. Another part of the play explains a little about the Rangers (think special forces of the 18th century) and how Rogers took anyone - British, American, Native American - and any of these men could lead no matter their birth or race if they showed promise.
