Translate Algebraic to Verbal - I Have Who Has Class Activity

Translate Algebraic to Verbal - I Have Who Has Class Activity
, Grade 5, Activities, Games

I Have Who Has is a long time student favorite. Use this class activity over and over for students to practice translating algebraic expressions to verbal expressions. Implementation: 1. Make a copy of the cards and cut apart. You will only need one set to reuse for all of your classes. Use color paper and laminate if possible. (I had a set of I Have Who Has cards that were not laminated, used them for several years, and they held up well.) Keep an uncut copy for you to use as a key. 2. Have students number 1 - 32 on a piece of paper. 3. Mix up the cards and pass them out, one to each student. There are 32 cards so if you have fewer than 32 students then give some students two cards. 4. Any student can start with their WHO HAS. (If some students have 2 cards, start with one of them.) The student that has the algebraic expression for the WHO HAS statement speaks up and says I HAVE ____ WHO HAS_____. (reading their card) They should read their WHO HAS twice. All students will record the answer on their paper whether they have the card or not, trying to beat the person who has the card. Continue in this manner until you return to the starting card and they will then get to say their I HAVE. 5. You can repeat this activity by mixing up the cards before handing them out again. You can even repeat the activity over several days. This activity corresponds to the Common Core 5th grade math standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.OA.A.2 Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them. For example, express the calculation "add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2" as 2 × (8 + 7). There are 32 cards and detailed directions for you, the teacher. Students will each have a card and listen to the "Who Has" statement. If their card matches they will say "I Have" and read the matching statement along with their "Who Has" statement. This can be used as a class filler and can be used multiple times in the same day or on different days. The cards use limited numbers so students are matching the cards by mathematical terms such as product, sum, more than, increased by, etc. instead of by the numbers used. Examples of expressions used are : twice the sum of a number and 6 which matches to 2(n + 6) and 10 less than the product of a number and 6 which matches to 6n - 10.

Following Directions SEL Activity

Following Directions SEL Activity
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Social Skills, Special Education Needs (SEN), Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, Activities, Worksheets & Printables

In this SEL product, you will get 3 handouts. One is the directions you will give to students with prompts for them to follow your directions. There are 6 prompts; cut out the 4 pictures, glue the bird on top of the tree, glue the ball on the left side of the tree, glue the puppy to the right of the tree, and glue the sun on the top right corner of the page. Then students are instructed to color the picture. There is a picture of the final scene if the students follow the directions. The 2nd one is the handout for the students to cut out images and glue them onto the handout. There are 4 images to cut out; a ball, a bird, a puppy, and a sun. They will glue around a tree. The 3rd is a fun mindfulness coloring sheet with owls (they are wise to follow directions) with the title "I'm A 1st Time Listener!" This is a great lesson for helping students put into practice after learning the tips for following directions and paying attention in school. You first can go over the key tips such as 1) Look at the speaker, 2) Listen to the directions, 3) Say O.K. (acknowledge the task), and then 4) Do the activity or task. Following directions is a great skill to model and practice. It is important to not assume students know this skill-especially after the pandemic. In my own work as a school counselor, I have noticed students have difficulty with even the most simple directions. Hopefully, this activity will help your students as well. This activity is a great follow-up to my Boom Deck on following directions here: https://teachsimple.com/product/following-directions-sel-boom-cards-with-audio In the Boom Deck above, the students will get to move objects based on the directions. They are a great way to break up the monotony of memorizing the names of states and capitals and allow your learners to gain knowledge in a few of our nation’s major landmarks. Not only that, but they will also walk away having learned some fun facts about 10 U.S. states. As learners work their way through the 20 task cards, they will be asked to identify states and capitals, but with a few twists. They’ll identify states by their silhouettes, the names of the capitals, or the state’s nickname. Answers will be given in the form of naming a state, capital, or a state’s two letter abbreviation. In one of the worksheets, learners will put their internet research skills to the test in order to find the state and corresponding capital in which famous landmarks are found. Another worksheet requires learners to solve grade level math problems as a way to find the names of states and their capitals. These activities are rounded out with a worksheet in which learners will identify states by their silhouettes and unscramble the name of their capitals. The 4 worksheets are PRINT and GO, saving you valuable time. Once the initial prep of the task cards is complete, you will have a go-to activity to use with your learners year-over-year. As an added bonus, the task cards also come with a set of corresponding Power Point slides. This allows for whole-group instruction.
