Long I: Three Review Games Sample Game Note: This download is in PowerPoint show mode to protect the rights of the image creator(s), and is thus UNEDITABLE. Playing the Game Three games. In the first game, one picture will slowly appear (20 seconds long). Press the cookie in the bottom-left to begin, press again to reveal the answer. Press the arrow in the bottom-right to change to the next page. There are 9 questions in total Second game is similar but there will be two pictures appearing at the same time. Press the donut in the bottom-left to begin. The pictures will appear on the clock, press the pink clock button next to the picture that corresponds to the word at the top. Wrong answer will buzz, correct answer will make a noise and both pictures will be fully revealed. Press arrow in the bottom-right to change page. 4 questions in total. Last game will review the words from the previous game. Word is at the top, four pictures below, choose the correct picture for the word. Incorrect answers will dim out, correct answer will flash. The short Vowel 'u' Sound: This short video was created to support pupils who are not using a standard English dialect , where the pronunciation of the short vowel u differs from standard pronunciation and begins to interfere with reading and spelling. In particular, it addresses confusion that can arise once CK words (-uck) and later -ook words are introduced (e.g. duck/book ). This resource is not designed to teach beginner readers who are learning to decode and spell short vowel 'u' words like 'run' and 'mud'. Rather, it is intended for children who can already read and say short u words accurately in context (e.g. sun, run, jump ), but who struggle to distinguish between -uck and -ook when writing because the child's pronunciation of 'uck' has merged with 'ook'. The video aims to help the child develop one clear, standard sound for the short vowel u to use for reading and spelling, while recognising that other pronunciations may exist in everyday speech. At this learning stage of phonics learning, children rely heavily on the sounds they hear, and if they are coping with mixed dialects, it can make learning to decode and spell much more difficult than otherwise. The video works slowly and deliberately. The child says the vowel sound, then says the word, listening to match the 'u' sound each time. Once the sound and individual words are said successfully, we introduce short phrases, aiming to keep the standard 'u' sound throughout. Beautiful pictures make this feel like a special resource - not fo.rr babies. There are no actions, songs or games to distract, just calm listening and speaking practice. Alphabet Flashcards Here is a colourful set of Alphabet Flashcards – sure to delight any child. As a bonus, as I know that some children are transport lovers, I have included two pictures for some letters to provide a form of transport to appeal to these children (i.e.: H for helicopter, R for rocket, L for lorry, F for fire and fire engine, A for ambulance). This set of alphabet flashcards is equally suited to a variety of needs: · The parent with a young child · The teacher in the classroom · The classroom assistant · The SEN teacher · The ESL/EFL teacher They can be used in all situations to help children learn those all-important alphabet/beginning/initial sounds and become familiar with both upper- and lower-case letter shapes. Suggested ways in which to use the Alphabet Flashcards: · Pin them on the wall in order as a display: ask the child to point to the letters either by name, by sound, or by picture (beginning sound). · Look around the house/classroom for things that begin with the same sound as the object on a given flashcard. · Choose several cards (suitable for the needs of the child you are playing with) and lay them out on the table face up: Play I spy: I spy with my little eye something beginning with ‘….’. · Bean bag toss: Lay a selection of flashcards on the floor and give the child a bean bag. This Guided Reading Book - Shanghai (Level M) with lesson plan includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level.
