FULL CATALOG OF DOWNLOAD LINKS AND ENCYCLOPEDIA INDEX HERE Lesson Snapshot Title: Lollipops Genre: Nonfiction (informational text) Subject: Reading (Informational Text) / Science (cooking & materials) / Social Studies (history of foods) Primary Topic: Hard candy on a stick: making, history, name Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): O What This Lesson Teaches Best Defines a lollipop as hard candy for licking or sucking, on a stick, and notes different names in different places (“lolly,” “sucker”). Explains how hard candy is made: sugar is cooked with water until thick, then cooled so it hardens. Describes why corn syrup matters in hard candy: it can help stop sugar crystals from forming so candy stays smooth and “glassy.” Shares historical background: candy on sticks appeared long ago (including the Middle Ages), and the “modern lollipop” has a cloudy history with early 1900s U.S. companies (including a story about George Smith and later trademarking). Explores word history: “lollipop” was recorded in 1796, with possible connections to “lolly” and “pop,” plus other ideas (including Romani words and candy apples on sticks). Learning Goals Students will describe what a lollipop is and how people eat it, using details from the text. Students will explain the steps that turn sugar and water into hard candy (cook, thicken, cool, harden). Students will explain how corn syrup affects hard candy by helping stop sugar crystals from forming. Students will identify key time references about lollipops (Middle Ages, early 1900s, 1796) and tell what the text says about each. Students will summarize what the passage says about where the name “lollipop” may have come from. Key Vocabulary From the Text crystals — tiny hard bits that can make candy feel gritty. gritty — rough, like sand. glassy — smooth and shiny, like glass. trademarked — legally protected a name for a product. spirals — twisty, swirl shapes. Cored Ed Encyclopedia Overview The Cored Ed Encyclopedia is a weekly series of lessons that you can pick up and use right away. These short readings fit into whatever time you have available. Each one includes a warm-up, a reading, and a set of questions, but it’s flexible — you can do just the reading, the full lesson, or skip the writing section if you need to. Each lesson focuses on a single topic so students don’t get lost. The writing is clear but never childish, making it perfect for grades two through five. Topics range from animals and science to history, inventions, and everyday things. No matter the level of the student, everyone should take away at least one new idea or fact from each lesson. The materials are easy to print, easy to explain, and require no setup. They work well for whole-class teaching, partner work, or independent study.

Most pages include a tiny follow-up box—students draw or label 2–3 target words from a small word box, add a quick count, or color in the scene—so the activity reinforces both content and skills in a highly engaging format. Each completed set includes: A themed maze page. A simple student instruction strip. An answer key showing the solved path for teacher support or self-checking Themes Included These mazes cover a wide range of fun, age-appropriate themes, including: Seasons & Holidays (e.g., Halloween, Easter, Valentine’s Day) Math-Lite Connections (e.g., quick counts, number words) Everyday Topics (e.g., Animals, Weather, School) Special Units (e.g., Health, Earth Day, Sports, Kindness) Each topic reflects students’ real-life experiences and interests while strengthening problem-solving, visual scanning, and fine-motor control in a playful, highly visual way. Easy extensions (optional): Time it: solve once in pencil, then try to beat the time in pen Retell the route using sequence words (first, next, then, finally) Count intersections or turns and graph the results Write a 1–2 sentence mini-story about the scene using the target words Design a tiny maze in the corner for a partner to solve Differentiation tips: Offer a finger-trace pass before pencils for emerging learners Highlight the borders of the correct region on first attempts Use thicker-line versions or simpler pages to build confidence Pair roles: “navigator” gives directions; “driver” traces the path For similar downloads and other frees, do check out Cored Group on TeachSimple.

TR Blend Find and Colour Phonics Worksheet to Develop Phonemic
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Language Development, Phonics, Kindergarten, Preschool, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
This TR fun, Find and Color worksheet for initial blends is TRemendous for acquainting children orally with initial consonant blends and helping them develop the necessary phonemic awareness in preparation for more advanced blending work, involving four phonemes. What is included in the pack? One PDF sheet for the TR blend. This is a sample of our pack of 20 activities covering common initial blends which can be found here in one PDF file: less clutter on your computer! What do the worksheets involve? Pupils are instructed to combine the two letters on the worksheet and then look for objects that start with that consonant blend. Then, these items ought to be coloured, leaving the others uncoloured. Children can easily work on the sheet unaided once they have been instructed, although, with those children with special needs, it is strongly suggested that an adult works with the child for maximum benefit. How to use The introduction of the concept of initial blends needs to be done thoroughly. When I work with children, especially those with a special need, I first like to teach children to blend two consonant letters. Then I work on developing the children's phonemic awareness: that being the ability to hear two consonant letters blended at the beginning of a word, easily. This is difficult for some pupils and takes a lot of practice. These worksheets can assist by first encouraging students to blend the two consonant letters and then by helping them to hear the blend at the start of a word. As often as you can, practice blending the letters in each initial blend and encourage the students to follow suit. I find that modelling is key at this stage. Who are the initial blends Find and colour worksheets for? Young learners Those with a special need Due to their non-babyish nature , they can be successfully used with older ESL/EFL pupils. Answer keys: The answer key is included on the sheet, in small print.

IR Phonics Presentation
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Language Development, Phonics, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, 3, Presentations, Teacher Tools
This 'ir' digraph Phonics Presentation is a taught lesson especially suitable for those who have special needs or need a slower pace. This video aims to build phonemic awareness of the IR sound, and give plentiful exposure to the new sound so that children can begin to sound IR words out. Because we want pupils to learn the sound thoroughly to decode before the child becomes familiar with the words with the IR sound, which are few, we use some words that the child may not have heard of, but will increase vocabulary, I find that it is too easy for children to learn IR words by sight and not be familiar with the phonics. Special features of the 'ir' PowerPoint lesson This IR video lesson is one of a series, teaching phonics systematically, to enable every child to succeed. There are no distractions/annoying background music for the special needs child to have to 'block out' before s/he can learn - no jingly music, no comic pictures. Nothing moves quickly. Everything is explained very simply. Sound buttons are provided for use if necessary. What is included in/with the 'ck' Digraph PowerPoint? This 'IR' video is a narrated lesson. It is just like having your own phonics teacher! There are 35 slides. We begin by introducing 'IR' and hearing and segmenting orally words with the IR sound. The video then goes on to help the child to sound out words with ir to spell. Finally, there is a fun challenge to help the child track the IR sound in words - an important skill for the special needs/dyslexic child: words float onto the screen and the child must indicate when they see IR and when they do not. How can the ‘IR' video be used? It can be used in multiple ways: It can either be used by the child, with support from an adult, as well as to give the parents a feel for what is necessary - i.e., for training purposes. It can be sent home for a child to watch with his/her parents after seeing it in class - this will then act as revision as well as training the parent as to what is necessary to help the child. What is included? One video with 35 scenes Written by a teacher with over 30 years’ experience of teaching phonics to all abilities. Reading Made Simple: helping parents to teach their child to read.
