In North America, Indian groups spoke more than 300 different languages and had diverse cultures. According to their environment, they made their living by hunting, fishing, farming, or herding. Their social organization ranged from small tribes, composed of several clans (related families), to large confederacies, composed of many tribes. These notes give students an overview of the major tribe, the type of housing used by the tribe, their major food supply, their clothing and tools, and the present-day territories they inhabited. This mapping activity allows students to review the major North American tribes that inhabited each region. Do you need a few new ideas for your grade 4-6 math unit on angles (acute, right, obtuse, straight, and reflex)? This one page handout could be a super addition to your unit planning! There are three quick and easy activities provided to add new ideas to your instruction and help those students who learn in different ways. 1) Kinaesthetic Angle Game: Everyone stands up. The teacher calls out a type of angle (acute, right, obtuse, straight, reflex). Students use their arms to make that angle. Students can make up their own "angle dance routines" and teach them to their peers. 2) Angle Scavenger Hunt: Students make a table in their notebook with the five types of angles: acute, right, obtuse, straight, reflex. They look around the classroom, the school, or outside and record examples of each type of angle in the environment. 3) Angle Exit Slip: Want to ensure your students are grasping the concepts of your angle unit and learning how to use a protractor accurately? Copy and give this quick assessment . Students must measure and classify two angles and draw three given angles. It only takes five minutes, but it can give you very helpful information about which students in your class might need some small group instruction to master these concepts. It will help your students practice adding and multiplying decimals while they shop to hit the target amount! The game includes 4 rounds with grocery shopping items for Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa holidays. Every round presents five food items to the students who practice estimating costs to manage a given budget. Whole class activity: This engaging exercise makes learning mathematical concepts more concrete than abstract learning alone. Students are shopping for a purpose! Realistic applications make education impactful and enjoyable for students, and math games are always a hit with my students! How to Use: This is a fun, whole class activity that you need to be able to project in your classroom on an interactive whiteboard. It is a Powerpoint presentation so you can move the boxes that cover the prices of each item after the students have guessed the price- just like on a real game show! You give your students a target budget (for example between $50-52). The smaller the budget range, the more challenging it will be. Students have to buy at least four of the items. Ask one student to choose one item at a time. The student guesses the price and chooses how many they want to buy of it. Then you reveal the price, all of the students students calculate how much they have spent, and you move on to the next item! Grades to Use With: This is a fun game for grades 3-6 when you are studying money, grocery shopping, and decimal operations. Even kids in middle school will have fun playing along!
