Reading Intervention programme for Struggling Readers

This is a series of decodable phonic books written for struggling readers. Struggling readers often have gaps in their phonic knowledge or have started to guess. These books help to retrain the child. They start back at the beginning with CVC words to ensure the child can read fluently at this level and to build shattered confidence. Sometimes children think they can read the easy books, but find that they have learnt to guess words which interrupts fluency and excludes them from comprehending what has been read. They build up from CVC words, through consonant blends words with a short vowel sound, to ck, oo words. More are coming! They are useful for reading intervention for older pupils, maybe even those of 11+ who are struggling to read fluently. Pupils should be able to blend fluently and have some phonic knowledge, though it may not be secure. Who are these book for? Older pupils who can read, but who have a reading age well below their chronological age. Such children may struggle to read simple text with accuracy/fluency and thereby lack comprehension. They are not for pupils who are just beginning to read with phonics. Please see my CVC decodable and CVCC readers for books for such pupils. They are convenient enough for parents to use with their children, as well as for use by teachers and private tutors. Outline and steps Start at the beginning with book 1 (the books are labelled by file name, not on the covers so as not to belittle the pupil). Teach the sounds afresh and then let the pupil read the book when you are sure that s/he will succeed. As the pupil reads, assess what further work is needed t help the child progress and provide it. Look for more in this series coming shortly in my store. I am finding more and more such pupils desperate for help. You can help too! It is not hard but just needs a little understanding of the problem. I thought that my pupils would look with disdain at these books. I found the opposite; they were so relieved that at last somebody had actually given them a book they could read! Purpose These books have been written and tried and tested on some of my older pupils (mainly boys I admit), and they have proved very helpful. Most of my pupils have a dyslexic type problem, involving poor processing skills. It is crucial that they build a secure foundation for reading ability to build upon. This book, used as described will help to build that foundation. With appropriate help and these books, they have all made good progress in a reasonable space of time (dependant also on ability as well as teaching). What is included? For each title, a book with reading passages and a fluency chart. Two PowerPoints with supporting teaching resources for books 1 and 2.

This Coordinate Plane Lesson - Tables, Graph Points, Predictions is a ready to use 28 page PowerPoint lesson for teaching students how to represent real world and mathematical problems in the coordinate plane. You will see hard to find real world problems using the coordinate plane. Students will complete tables given a coordinate plane graph and graph points given a table. Students will also be given conceptual (word) problems and asked to use that information to complete a table or to graph points in the coordinate plane. Next students will make a prediction for a new data point based on the table and its given graph or a conceptual problem. Students will also be asked to interpret coordinate values of a point based on the information from the table and graph or a conceptual situation. During the lesson students will also be introduced to a graph break (sqiggly line). At the end of this Coordinate Plane Lesson - Tables, Graph Points, Predictions lesson is a four question practice quiz for students to show their understanding of the skills learned.
