Culture Lesson and Barnga Game
Social Studies, History, Psychology, Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, Lesson Plans, Teacher Tools
Culture and Barnga Lesson: Teacher Guide Thanks so much for purchasing this product. It takes many hours to create products like these, but it means a lot to know they may be helping create memorable lessons for students outside of my classroom, too! This lesson is meant to introduce students to some of the basics of culture and the difficulty of cultural exchange in our society with a memorable game . An adapted and simplified version of Barnga is included in this product. Barnga asks students to play a simple card game without talking to each other– the hitch is that each student has almost imperceptibly different instruction sheets that make facilitating the game incredibly frustrating (and funny!) Make sure to give students time to check over their individual instruction sheets in groups of 4 to 6 players. Ensure that each player has a different sheet. If you look at the instruction sheets they have a subtle page number indicator in the footer that lets you quickly ensure different variations of the instructions are spread throughout the activity. If anything else is complicated, feel free to reach out to me at tristanjbernhard@gmail.com and I would love to discuss the activity further! Happy Teaching! Titanic Social Stratification Simulation
Social Studies, History, Psychology, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, Activities, Projects
Abandon Ship! Social Stratification Simulation Teacher Guide Intro: This is a great class period activity to introduce and/or demonstrate the pervasiveness of social stratification. Step by Step Instructions: Sort students into groups of 8. If a group has less than 8 than students may need to assume multiple roles Assign each student a role, and hand them the “handout” for their character. They will assume this role. Their objective is to secure a spot on the lifeboat. Give students a couple of minutes to read their handout and get familiar with their character. Assemble students in groups physically. Inform them they are to create a list of 5 members that will be granted access on the lifeboat. Under no circumstances will more than 5 members be allowed a spot- it would cause the raft to potentially sink. Give students a 15 minute timer to complete their list of 5. Make sure students know that they each need to share out to the group all of the details about their character. It is important that students base their decisions on the facts. After selections are made have students return to typical seats and go through the discussion questions together The slides provide a handful of reflection questions but feel free to use your own. I like to try to investigate what students chose not to share. For example, often the elementary school teacher opts not to share they are $89,000 in debt. This can start a great conversation around how societal standards invoke shame on those in difficult financial standing Notes: I often offer a couple points extra credit, or a piece of candy, or some other kind of incentive to those that gain a spot on the boat. I recommend this to boost engagement and bring more passion to the activity. I try to not let students see the character sheets of other characters, to create a little “gamesmanship” Consider adding bullet points to characters to make them more complex before printing the sheets Take A Look At More Of My Best Sellers: Major Supreme Court Cases Slides Crash Course Government Episode 5 Worksheet Constitutional Clauses Slides + Worksheet Arctic Survival Team Building Activity American Election Slides + Guided Notes Crash Course Government Episode 18 Worksheet Enjoy More From My Store Here: Active Social Studies

The Tragedy of the Commons Simulation
Social Studies, History, Psychology, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, Activities, Projects
The Tragedy of the Commons Teacher Guide Thank you so much for purchasing this simulation! I think you will find the game to be engaging and an excellent starting point to discuss competition and cooperation, the tragedy of the commons, and the human default toward greed. The class slides cover the various steps of the simulation well. Essentially, the game demonstrates how our competitive nature can ultimately be detrimental to everyone in some circumstances. If students work together, it is possible to earn 480 slips of paper. More commonly, the leading student only nets 40 or 50 slips of paper. When choosing volunteers it sometimes works well to choose volunteers who are naturally competitive to highlight this main takeaway. To prepare, you will possibly want to print up to 480 slips of paper (in the folder). Typically, I only print about 200 because I’ve never had students that actually collaborate to the full extent. To stoke competition you can also let students “buy” things with their slips of paper, such as a homework pass, a candy bar, or 5 minutes of talk time for the class, etc. This can accelerate the competition. Enjoy, and email with any questions about carrying the simulation out! Economic Systems Simulation
Social Studies, Government, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Projects
Teacher Guide Economic Systems Game Thank you for using this product to introduce economic systems in an engaging and memorable way! Consult the teacher instructions below to help you facilitate the game. Print the “Class Bucks” located in the folder where this instructions sheet was located. There is a pdf version and a google doc version. Each page contains 12 “bucks”. In my experience 5 “bucks” per student is enough to create a manageable but exciting classroom economy. The goal of the game is to demonstrate, in an over-simplistic way, capitalism, socialism, and communism using a rock paper scissors game that most students feel pretty competitive playing. I recommend having a very simple prize that students can buy at the end of the game if they achieve 10 or more bucks in a single round. In the past I have used treats or 5 extra credit points as incentives. For round 1 you are demonstrating capitalism. I recommend a high degree of stratification for this round. In other words, have some students start with 8 “bucks” and have others start with 1. You can use this random wheel to randomize numbers between 1 and 8. You might say “okay this is Jaylen” and then spin the wheel to see how many he starts with. The big difference here represents the stratification that is natural in capitalism. Possible for anyone to get rich, but easier if you started with more, etc. Play the round by having students wager “bucks” on a round of rock paper scissors After each round, take a minute to have the class note how many players got to 10 and how many had 0 or 1. This is typically a higher number for capitalism, which they might notice. After round 1 take a few bucks from the highest earners and give them to the lowest so everyone has at least 1 or 2. For round 2 you are showing democratic socialism. I usually have everyone start with 3, 4, or 5 and run the round again. Then I tax anyone over 6 back down to 6 and use it to try to guarantee everyone at least has 3. For round 3, I have everyone start with 4, and at the end of the round make it 4 again to demonstrate communism. Finally, review the reflection questions at the end to hit on major themes!
