Narrative Writing Workshop
ELA, Writing, Grade 2, 3, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Students love to tell stories - especially about themselves! Helping students learn how to put these stories in a well-organized format can prove challenging for them from time to time. Because of that, we want to be intentional about what lessons we are teaching and how engaging we are making these lessons. The more specific and step-by-step we can make the process, the better. This is a Narrative Writing Workshop that was designed for 2nd and 3rd grade students following the Common Core standards for narrative writing. In this packet you will find everything you will need to help your students complete beautiful personal narratives based on their own experiences. It includes steps for a prewrite, a first draft, proofreading and editing, an example of a finished narrative, a final draft, and a review of dialogue and how to write it. (I also used a wonderful dialogue bundle created by Teacher Treehouse, which I highly recommend for practice.) There is also paper for the prewrite and final draft. This workshop took me about 4 days to complete, using the time we would usually reserve for our reading program – about an hour to an hour and a half every day. If you have time at the end, it’s fun to see how they illustrate their narratives and/or give them an opportunity to type their narratives on the computer. If you can print them out - even better! You could even compile all the narratives into a book for the students to enjoy in their free time! I hope you enjoy! Fraction Clip Art
Math, Fractions, Grade 2, 3,
Fractions can be a challenging standard for students to grasp - particularly as the concepts move from simple fractions to equivalent fractions to comparing fractions and so on. If there is one thing that we can all agree on when it comes to instruction it is the importance of student engagement. Achieving student engagement is composed of many factors and can look different from lesson to lesson. For many of our students, engaging visuals will support their learning. This is a set of Fraction Clip Art I created that is sure to support student learning. This clip art can be easily inserted into instructional lessons. You can also use this clip art to create your own games, worksheets, assessments, and more. You will notice that the clipart is not exact, which is more representative of how the students themselves will draw their shapes and opens up dialogue about how important it is that we still envision equal parts - even if we can't draw them that way. Shapes and fractions included are: --Circles (halves – twelfths) --Octagons (halves, fourths, eighths, sixteenths) --Rectangles (halves – sixths, eighths, tenths, twelfths) --Squares (halves – sixths, eighths, tenths, twelfths) --Stick It Fraction Kids Each shape set comes with a blank, unshaded option. The blank fraction can be used to have students shade in the fraction that you name. This is a quick and easy way for you to assess their mastery. These files are in JPEG format, making it simple for you to insert them into your resources. I hope you enjoy! Learning how to graph and interpret data is a math skill that many of our students really enjoy. Graphing activities come in many different formats, so students like the versatility of this skill. These activities will take your students' graphing skills to the next level as the boxes or pictures start representing more than one object - instead of just one. For instance, one flower on the graph might represent 5 actual flowers and the students will now have to count their flowers by 5s, or if a flower represents 4 flowers, a flower might be cut in half to represent 2. Each activity ends with a challenge question to take your students' thinking to the next level. This is a Graphing Activities Packet that is ideal for 2nd and 3rd grade students. Poetry Unit
ELA, Literature, Poetry, Grade 3, 4, 5, Lesson Plans, Teacher Tools
Have you ever told your class you were going to embark on a poetry unit only to be met with groans and sentiments like, "I haaate poetry!" Me too. A lot of kids think of poetry as tedious rhyming, which can be overwhelming to young learners. This packet will open your students' eyes to some different kinds of poetry; poetry that does not rhyme, but is still poetic in its own way. This poetry unit includes 5 poetry types, none of which involve rhyming: - Acrostic - Autobiographical - Cinquain - Diamante - Color I did not create these types of poetry. I simply put them in a format that will make it easier for a teacher like me to teach to her/his students. On the following pages are tips and tricks for teaching each one. You will also find an example of a completed poem for each type of poetry, and an outline for your students to use for their own poetry. Whenever I finish this unit, without fail, I have kids asking if they can “do more poetry!” EXTENSION IDEAS… o After completing the poetry unit, have each student choose their favorite one. Allow time for students to share their poems orally with the class, focusing on oral presentation skills. o Use iPads or computer labs and allow students time to type their poems (however many you choose), adding different fonts, colors, borders, etc. They are always excited to have them printed out so they can show them off! o Have students illustrate their favorite poem. This makes a great bulletin board! I hope you enjoy! Opinion Writing Pack
ELA, Writing, Grade 2, 3, 4, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
When you are introducing new styles of writing to your students, you want to ensure you find quality writing resources to support their learning. This is an Opinion Writing Packet that uses the TREE Format. The TREE format consists of the following acronym: Topic - What opinion are you going to share? Reason - Why is this your opinion? (The students will give three reasons) Example - Support each reason with a personal example. End - Sum it up with an ending statement. This is great for 2nd – 4th grade students. Included in this file you will find 5 opinion paragraph writing workshops along with some blank templates so you can choose your own topics. Students will opine about holidays, food, music, movies, and pets. Ideas for introducing the workshops: • Make lists of possible holidays, foods, music, movies, and pets to give the kids ideas • Show pictures and/or play music related to each topic to get the kids thinking about what their opinions might be • Allow students time to discuss their opinions with their classmates. This really gets their brains thinking specifically about their opinions and reasons for their opinions • Share ideas as a class about possible opinions. Some students struggle to come up with their own ideas, and this might help guide them to their own opinions These workshops are 1-2 day projects – about 60-70 minutes total, depending on how much practice your students already have with writing opinions and how you decide to introduce the topics. Recycling Workshop Home-School Connection
Social Studies, Grade 3, Activities, Projects
Have you been learning about the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle? Now that your 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grade students know what it means to recycle, it's time to put that concept into action. Students will find an object at home that would otherwise be trash and recycle it into something wonderful! Once they've completed their projects at home, they will bring them to school and get going on the second part of the workshop, which is a how-to writing outlining the steps they took to recycle their objects. Students will introduce their projects, discuss transition words, draw pictures of each step, and write a final draft. As a conclusion to the workshop, students will show their completed objects to the class and share their completed how-to writings with their classmates. The ultimate objectives are to put recycling into action, write a clear how-to essay so others can do the same at home, and share those essays with others. It's been a crowd favorite for three years running! In this product you will find a letter to send home to parents and students outlining the at-home expectations for the project, an outline for a rough draft of the how-to writing with a section dedicated to possible transition words for each step of their project, and a page for students to write a final draft. There's even a spot for pictures of the students with their projects! Finally, a rubric for assessment has been included and covers both the written and oral parts of the workshop.
