ELA, Writing, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Worksheets & Printables, Novel Studies
Nothing But The Truth by Avi is a documentary novel telling the story of student Philip Malloy and his homeroom teacher, Miss Margaret Narwin. Interesting things happen when Philip challenges Miss Narwin and the Harrison School District by singing The Star-Spangled Banner during homeroom, in violation of the school's policy. This PDF file of Socratic Seminar Questions contains twenty-six carefully crafted questions on seven pages. The first six pages have four questions each. An additional seventh page contains two summary questions which require more detailed responses from the students. All of the questions can be used to facilitate in-class discussions about the novel. Each page contains questions related to one or a group of chapters (page 1 = Chapters 1-9; page 2 = Chapters 10-11, page 3 = Chapter 12, etc.). The Socratic Seminar Questions can also be used for homework assignments or class quizzes , and the pages will help teachers know whether or not the students have read and understand the important ideas within the novel. I hope that these Socratic Seminar Questions will be useful to teachers who present Nothing But The Truth to their students, and I believe that the questions will help students develop critical thinking skills in English and Language Arts as they read this unique novel. Common Core Standards for Reading and Writing for grades seven and eight are included at the end of the Socratic Seminar Questions Answer Key. If you find that these questions are helpful to your students, please contact me with the names of other novels that you use in class and I will see if I can write questions for those books.
