In 2010, History's 12-hour series `America the Story of Us' illustrated how technology advanced human progress throughout American history. This follow-up series takes it a step further by expanding beyond America and taking a look at how technology has evolved throughout the world. The series covers key events that were turning points in the human journey in transitioning from being hunter-gatherers to global citizens, including how people's lives in one part of the world are affected by events elsewhere. Among the topics covered are surviving the Ice Age, discovering farming techniques, the invention of movable type, creating the Industrial Revolution and exploring space. Actor Josh Brolin narrates. In the Andes, the Spanish open up the largest silver mine in the world and mint millions of pesos de ocho (pieces of eight). These coins transform the global economy. They fill the treasure chests of pirates. They fuel a stock market boom and help pay for the Taj Mahal. As trade booms, millions of people come to the New World as slaves. But a handful of Pilgrims come as pioneers looking for freedom. These teacher-generated questions are designed to help students focus in on key information during the video. Ready to print and use! Do your kids understand the crucial difference between a credit card and a debit card? Maybe not yet! Here is a ready-to-go handout that highlights the differences between credit cards and debit cards. Important vocabulary is included: chequing account, savings account, overdraft, limit, minimum, and interest). How to Use: Two versions of this sheet are included: one with the pros and cons filled in and one with them left blank for students to do. I would project the completed version on an interactive whiteboard and give students the partially blank copy to complete. You could also let your students think of the pros and cons themselves. They might come up with a lot of great ideas! You could also look at different credit card websites to see common interest rates, annual fees, loyalty points, and rules and restrictions. Do a sample problem where someone buys an expensive item on a credit card and takes a long time to pay it off. See how much it will actually cost with all of the interest payments included. Scientist Jacques Monod - Fact Sheet, Quiz & Interactive Version (PDF & H5P) Jacques Monod – Gene Regulation and the Logic of Life Fact Sheet, Quiz & Interactive Exercises (PDF + H5P) 🧬⚙️ This 45-minute resource introduces students in grades 9–11 to Jacques Monod – a French molecular biologist whose work helped uncover how genes are turned on and off. In many biology classes, students learn what DNA is and how proteins are made. But the question of how cells know which genes to activate – and when – often stays abstract. Monod, together with François Jacob, studied this in bacteria and developed the model of the lac operon. It’s a great example of how cells respond to their environment, and it laid the groundwork for much of what we know about gene regulation today. To make this topic more tangible, I’ve created a compact, ready-to-use lesson that breaks it down into manageable parts. It includes an informational text, a fact sheet, quiz questions with answers, and a creative partner task. The material comes in color and black-and-white versions, plus there’s a digital H5P version. What’s included: A clear, student-friendly text about Jacques Monod and the lac operon A fact sheet to help students sort and retain key information Quiz questions with an answer key – good for review or independent work A task where students design and exchange their own questions in pairs Printable PDF and interactive H5P formats for flexible use 💻 Answer key included ✅ I’ve used this resource during our genetics unit, especially when moving from DNA basics to regulation and gene expression. It also fits well in discussions about how scientific models are developed and tested. The partner task works well in small groups or for homework – depending on your setup. 🚀 Download now and bring the legacy of Jacques Monod into your biology lessons today! 📍 Best wishes, Heike from Lernfitness Did You Know? Critical Thinking: Debate with Yourself- Modern Debate Prompts for High School English or Social Studies
ELA, Social Studies, Reading, Reading Comprehension, Strategies, History, Psychology, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Critical Thinking: Debate with Yourself- Modern Debate Prompts for High School English or Social Studies This is a resource designed to get your students thinking about current issues. It provides five different prompts, inviting students to wrestle with modern issues across themes like personal finance, technology, environmental impact, higher education choices and social media use. In each scenario presented, students are tasked with researching both sides of an issue independently before deciding where they fall on the issue. A Twist to Classroom Debates This activity allows students to 'debate with themselves'. They need to collect support for both sides of the issue before determining their own opinion. This can work well as a small group activity or an individual assignment. Prompt Examples You have been approved for your first credit card (with a $1000 limit). Should you accept this offer? What are the benefits and risks, and what do you need to consider before signing up? You have been accepted into a reasonably-priced state college and a much more expensive university farther from home. What are the pros and cons of each option and which one would you choose? You have an 8 year-old car that runs well, but it is not an electric vehicle. Which is better for the environment: driving the old car longer or getting a brand new electric vehicle? How to Use: These prompts can be used in a variety of ways: Assign different prompts to each student. They research both sides of the issue and write their final opinion. After researching, you could hold a whole class debate where you either assign students to each side or let them choose which side they want to be on. Each side can present their points and rebuttals can be made. Students could (individually or in small groups) present their opinion to the class in a short speech or using a Powerpoint. You could use these topics and the accompanying research as the prompt for a persuasive essay assignment. What's Included: Title Page and a total of 5 different prompts in PDF format. Each prompt has a one-page graphic organizer to record ideas and write a final conclusion. Grades to Use With: These prompts are ideal for high school students in grades 9-12 who are able to research, debate, and/or write persuasive essays.
