This 55-page comprehensive, interdisciplinary curriculum will allow you to turn your classroom into an environmental action lab focused on ocean plastic pollution. Designed to bridge cutting-edge marine science with civic advocacy, it provides students with opportunities to move beyond passive learning and into actual environmental action based on evidence. The curriculum consists of three phases that take students through a complete educational process. In Phase 1, Theoretical Framework gives students all of the background knowledge necessary for them as citizens to become advocates for change through evidence-based advocacy strategies (i.e., the Coriolis Effect; chemical properties of polymers; biodegradability; accumulation and magnification of toxins in food webs; marine ecosystems) designed using science and basic tenets of physics & chemistry that are used in designing marine policies. In Phase 2, Application Phase, students have the opportunity to apply what they have learned through 10 worksheets that require analytical thinking skills (i.e., interpreting data sets; calculating numbers; ecological reasoning; evaluating corporations' environmental claims) in the creation of project proposals, respectively, regarding greenwashing, greenhouse gas emission reductions. In Phase 3, Instructional Materials, teacher support is provided (i.e., graphic organizers; rubric; answer keys with rational explanations; pacing guide; differentiation strategies, etc.) for successful implementation of the curriculum across disciplines. Students will have the opportunity to analyze real-world examples of ocean plastic pollution facts, including: the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, Henderson Island, Midway Atoll; develop a quantitative analysis of the rate of time it takes for PVC plastic to decompose; create maps showing the locations of the locations of plastic and non-plastic debris along ocean currents; analyze data related to the successful clean up of beaches and oceans and use such information in forming international legislation that seeks to eliminate as much plastic pollution as possible through public awareness campaigns such as "I Love My Ocean" public service announcements etc. Students compose policy memos formally addressed to elected representatives. The materials will help students build skills and competencies in the areas of data literacy, systems thinking, scientific writing, persuasive communication and authentic political agency through a pressing global issue β marine plastic pollution. Shell Model β Chemical Elements Flashcards 118 cards for learning the periodic table Learn atomic structure and the periodic table through play and visual learning π§ͺπ§ These flashcards are designed to help students explore the structure of atoms using the shell model. Covering all 118 elements of the periodic table, each card includes the atomic number, element name, symbol, and a visual representation of the electron arrangement in shells. Itβs a simple but effective tool for bringing abstract chemistry content into a more visual and interactive format. Iβve used this set in grades 7β10, both in introductory lessons and for revision. What worked especially well was printing the cards twice and using them as a memory game (βFind the Pairsβ). Students match element names with their shell models or symbols β and along the way, they start to notice patterns: which elements belong to the same group, how many electrons fit in each shell, and what the outer shells can tell us about chemical reactivity. Whatβs included: 118 printable flashcards (PDF) β one for each element Each card features: atomic number, element name, chemical symbol, and shell model Suggestions for classroom use (games, sorting tasks, self-study) The cards can be used in a variety of ways: β As a memory game (matching name and shell model) β For group sorting activities (by group, period, metal/non-metal, etc.) β As quick quizzes in pair work β Or as visual aids when introducing atomic theory Theyβre suitable for different levels of difficulty. Beginners can focus on names and symbols, while more advanced students work with the shell diagrams and explain electron configurations. Itβs also a helpful tool for differentiation β everyone works at their own pace, but with the same visual material. This resource comes as a PDF and is easy to print and prepare. Laminating the cards is a good idea if you plan to use them more than once. π Best wishes, Heike from @Lernfitness Did You Know? Alkali Metals Concept Wheel β Interactive Chemistry Activity for Grade
STEM, Science, Chemistry, Physics, Life Sciences, Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Games, Worksheets & Printables, Quizzes and Tests, Teacher Tools, Worksheets, Flashcards, Projects, Presentations, Graphic Organizers
Alkali Metals Concept Wheel β Interactive Chemistry Activity for Grades 7β10 Learn Alkali Metals - visual learning π§ͺπ§ This concept wheel is a practical way to help students understand the alkali metals in Group 1 of the periodic table. I first made it for a grade 8 class that was struggling with the idea of chemical families. Instead of giving them another chart to copy, I tried this wheel activity, and it worked much better because they could see and handle the information piece by piece. The wheel has eight sections that cover the basics: general properties, reactivity, how these elements appear in nature, and some everyday uses. Students cut out and arrange the pieces to build the full circle. The activity takes a little bit of preparation, but once the pieces are made, you can reuse them. I usually store the sets in small envelopes so they are ready for the next lesson. There are different versions included. Some circles are already filled in, which is helpful when introducing the topic for the first time. Others are blank, so students can write their own notes after a lab or reading assignment. I have used the blank ones during review sessions, and students liked comparing their wheels with a partnerβs version. It also gives them a sense of ownership over the material. The wheel can be used in many ways: as a warm-up before a lab, as practice during a unit on the periodic table, or as a review before a quiz. It works for group tasks, but I have also had students complete it on their own. When the wheels are finished, they make a clear visual display for the classroom or for a studentβs notebook. This activity is designed for grades 7β10 chemistry or physical science. It supports lessons on periodic trends, classification of elements, and the special role of the alkali metals. π Best wishes, Heike from @Lernfitness Did You Know? Scientist Hans Krebs - Fact Sheet, Quiz & Interactive Version (PDF & H5P) Hans Krebs β Cellular Respiration and the Discovery of the Krebs Cycle Fact Sheet, Quiz & Interactive Exercises (PDF + H5P) π𧬠This 45-minute resource introduces students in grades 10β12 to Hans Krebs β the scientist who uncovered one of the most important metabolic pathways in our cells: the citric acid cycle, also known as the Krebs cycle. When teaching cellular respiration, many students can follow the basics of glucose breakdown and ATP production β but the details of what happens in the mitochondria often feel abstract. Krebs' discovery in the 1930s helped explain how cells extract energy efficiently from food molecules through a cycle of chemical reactions. Itβs a key part of understanding aerobic respiration and metabolism. To make this complex process more accessible, Iβve created a structured lesson that includes a short informational text, a fact sheet, quiz questions with answers, and a creative partner task. All materials are available in color and black-and-white, plus thereβs a digital H5P version for interactive learning. Whatβs included: A student-friendly text about Hans Krebs and the citric acid cycle A fact sheet to help visualize and summarize the steps of the cycle Quiz questions (with answer key) for quick review or comprehension checks A creative task where students develop and exchange their own questions in pairs Formats: Printable PDF and interactive H5P π» Answer key included β Iβve used this resource during our unit on cellular respiration, often right after glycolysis and before moving on to the electron transport chain. Itβs especially helpful for students who benefit from breaking down complex processes into steps. The partner activity works well for revision or as preparation for assessments. π Download now and bring the legacy of Hans Krebs into your biology lessons today! π Best wishes, Heike from Lernfitness Did You Know? Scientist Lynn Margulis - Fact Sheet, Quiz & Interactive Version (PDF & H5P) Lynn Margulis β Endosymbiosis and a New View of Evolution Fact Sheet, Quiz & Interactive Exercises (PDF + H5P) π§«π¬ This 45-minute resource introduces students in grades 7β10 to Lynn Margulis β a scientist who challenged conventional ideas about evolution and opened up new ways of understanding how complex cells came to be. Many students are familiar with Darwin and natural selection, but fewer know about Margulis and her theory of endosymbiosis. Through her work in the 1960s and 70s, she proposed that parts of our cells β like mitochondria and chloroplasts β actually originated from ancient symbiotic bacteria. Her ideas werenβt widely accepted at first, but over time they became a foundational part of modern biology. To make this topic accessible, Iβve put together a compact, ready-to-use lesson with everything needed for a solid introduction. It includes a short informational text, a fact sheet, quiz questions with answers, and a creative partner task. All materials are available in both color and black-and-white versions, plus thereβs an H5P version for digital use. Whatβs included: A student-friendly text about Lynn Margulis and her contributions to evolutionary biology A fact sheet to help students collect and structure key points Quiz questions with solutions for quick checks or review A pair activity where students create and exchange their own questions Printable PDF and interactive H5P formats for flexible use π» Answer key included β Iβve used this resource as part of our evolution unit, especially when discussing how scientific theories develop and why some ideas take time to be accepted. It also fits well into lessons on women in science or interdisciplinary approaches to biology. The format allows for independent work, partner activities, or short projects β whatever suits your group best. π Download now and bring the legacy of Lynn Margulis into your biology lessons today! π Best wishes, Heike from Lernfitness Did You Know?
