Communities and Citizenship: Full Day Substitute Plans

This is a comprehensive educational resource designed to assist both schools and homeschooling programs. The full day of activities are suitable for teachers or substitute educators.

The curriculum begins with morning and afternoon group messages, that provides an introduction to 'communities', and ends with an assessment. Each message promotes engaging discussion lasting approximately 30-45 minutes.

Included in the plan are reader response papers--completed after a 30 minute independent reading session. These papers promote thoughtful reflection on aspects like character development, plotlines, settings, as well as new vocabulary learned during the reading session.

Social Studies & Reading Components

• Comprehension passages featuring three distinct types communities: rural, urban, suburban.
• Create posters highlighting unique features of each community type.

Math Components

• Addition/subtraction problems relating to urban development disguised as coloring exercises.

Creative Activities

• Create pictures depicting suburban and rural settings using detailed descriptions provided.
• Create material for an ABC Book on Communities based on these descriptions.
