Middle School Math Stations: or Centers: Percent, Decimals, Fractions

Even when students are in middle school or the intermediate grades, they benefit from a variety of teaching strategies including the use of stations or centres! But they are a lot of work to prepare! This ready-to-go set of 5 stations will supplement a unit about fractions, decimals, and percent. Ways to Use: You can break your class into 5 groups and have them rotate one at a time through the centres, giving them 10-20 minutes at each one. Or, start students at certain centres and then allow them to move around at their own pace as long as no one centre gets too full. I find these are a great resource as you are finishing your unit and preparing for the unit test. Station 1: Students solve four word problems using percentages. (optional: set out white boards for students to use) Station 2: Students play a game to practice calculating sales & tax. (supplies needed: 6-sided dice) Station 3: Students design a floor plan and calculate what percent of the space each room occupies. Station 4: Students practice converting between percent, decimals, and fractions and play an online game . (optional: set out laptops or tablets for the online game extension) Station 5: Students apply what they have learned to a real-life problem, and practice writing and drawing about their mathematical thinking. Grades to Use With: These stations work well for grades 5-7 or high school special education classes. Standards: CCSS6.RP.A.3c Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent. CCSS7.RP.A.2a Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin. This downloadable PDF educational activity can help learners develop their sorting and classification skills. In this activity , learners are presented with a set of picture cards that have different pictures that vary in shape, size, color, and other features, and are asked to sort them based on specific criteria. For example, learners may be asked to sort a set of cards based on their function. This could include things we drink, things we ride in. Another way to approach this exercise is by sorting based on their features. For instance, learners may be given a card "Things with fur" and "Things with wings" then given a set of 12 individual cards 6 cards with pictures of things with fur and another 6 cards with pictures of things that have wings. This helps learners develop their ability to observe and categorize objects based on their physical characteristics. In addition to sorting by features and function, learners may also be asked to sort by classification. Overall, the "Sorting by Feature, Function and Classification" exercise is an engaging and effective way to help learners develop their critical thinking skills, classification abilities, and attention to detail. Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers Dice Game

This is a fun and easy game to add to your fractions unit to help students practice working with mixed numbers and improper fractions. Students must demonstrate knowledge of what makes an improper fraction, how to convert an improper fraction into a mixed number, and how to order and compare mixed numbers. I suggest using 10-sided dice (if possible) for a wider variety of outcomes. I encourage my students to use mini-whiteboards for recording their work and doing their calculations. Student Instructions: 1) You and your partner each roll the die two times so you each have two numbers. 2) Use your two numbers to make an IMPROPER FRACTION (which one should be the numerator?). 3) Write down your improper fraction and convert it to a mixed number. 4) Compare with your partner’s mixed number. Which number is bigger? You might have to find a common denominator if the whole numbers are the same. 5) The person with the larger number gets a point. Play until one person has five points. Grades to Use With: This is a simple game that can be an addition to a lesson or fraction review in grades 3-7 when students are working with fractions that have a value greater than one. Music around the World - My Musical World Journey - Passport & Profile This passport accompanies a series of lessons or a year-long project on music around the world or through Europe. Profiles: The students deal with music, songs, and dances from different countries and record important information, impressions, and thoughts about the music they have heard in a profile: Continent Title/Artist Style Typical Instruments Particularities Star rating (1-5) The flag in the wanted poster can be painted, or the colored variant can be used. In addition, there is a blank template without predefined country names and flags. Passport These 40th countries are included: Nordamerica: United States of America, Canada, Bahamas, Mexico, Puerto Rico South America: Argentina, Jamaica, Peru, Brazil Africa: Egypt, South-Africa Asia: South Korea, North Korea, India, Israel, China, Thailand, Japan, Saudi - Arabia Australia: Australia Oceania: New Zealand Europe: Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Iceland, Belgium, Scotland, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Netherlands, Switzerland, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Russia If a country has been “traveled”, a suitable passport stamp in color or black and white can be glued in. To prevent this from covering the wanted poster, it can be glued to the back or the left, empty back, for example. The passport stamps can also be affixed to the KV "My traveled countries" as an overview. Tip: Print passport stamps on self-adhesive label paper and cut them into the individual passport stamps. The passport stamps are included once as a copy template for a country. This can be used, for example, when the music of a country is developed together. In the second variant, all passport stamps of the countries are sorted by continent and prepared on a copy template. This copy template is suitable, for example, for free work, learning desks, ward work or if the students are to be provided with all passport stamps beforehand and not always handed out individually. Passport: The profiles can be glued or stapled in the "Musical Passport" in DIN A5 size. Option 1: The profile pages are designed in such a way that they can be glued on top of each other on the right side of the book cover. Option 2: A file strip is glued into the passport and the new pages are stapled there. The cover is also included in color and black and white. Additional pages for the passport: Additional pages can be stapled to the passport. All pages are also available in color and black and white. Map (p. 9) Continents (included in "Musical World Tour"): The students label the continents and color them in different colors. Alternatively, the colored card template can be used. Map of Europe (included in "Musical Europe Journey"): Students mark the position of the country on the map by putting crosses or notes once they have recorded music from that country in their passport. Countries I visited: Various templates are available in color and black and white. The students write down the names of the countries for which they have filled out a musical profile or stick in the passport stamp. Tip: Label profile pages with page numbers and use this overview as a table of contents. My music profiles: On this passport page, the categories of the profile are explained with questions and sample answers. The questions can be used to fill out the profiles.
