What You Get: This is aCharacter Comparison Activitythat was designed for upper elementary students who have learning or are reviewing this skill. This resource is a 4-page printable. How To Implement This Resource: You will print off enough copies for each student to have. Students will read the 3-page story titled “The Puffed Up Pig.” Because this is a comprehension activity, it’ll be most beneficial to allow students to read this story more than once. You might choose to begin by reading it as a whole group. For a second read, you can have students read it with a partner or in a small group. For a final read, have students read the story independently. When students have finished reading, they will select 2 characters from the story that they want to compare. Middle School Math Stations or Centers: Fraction Operations + - x /

This ready-to-print set of 5 stations or math centres will supplement a middle school geometry unit about fraction operations: including adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators and multiplying and dividing proper and improper fractions. I have included lots of real-life examples such as recipes, time, and portions of food, along with lots of visual representations and diagrams for the four operations. Math stations are an excellent way to get students engaged as they move about the room and work cooperatively with their peers. Even when students are in intermediate grades, they benefit from a variety of teaching strategies including the use of stations to make math class more interactive. Station 1: Students solve four word problems using fraction operations. I encourage them to also draw diagrams to help where applicable. (optional: set out white boards for students to use) Station 2: Students play a fraction dice game to practice adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Extension: they can use improper fractions for an extra challenge. (supplies needed: 6- or 10-sided dice and 2-sided counters) Station 3: Students work with fractions to double a real recipe. Station 4: Students show multiplication and division of fractions visually to enhance understanding. (optional: laptops or tablets for online game extension) Station 5: Students extend their learning by working collaboratively to explain their thinking about dividing fractions in a math journal entry (using pictures, numbers, and words). ***Answer Key Included*** Grades to Use With: These stations are designed for middle grades students (grades 5-7) or high school special education classrooms.
