Olympic Games Writing Challenge | Cities, sports, challenges, & wins!

Olympic Games Writing Challenge | Cities, sports, challenges, & wins!
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Games, Activities

Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. The Olympic games inspire so many young people. In this narrative writing assignment, students will choose their city and sport, as well as what went wrong and what went well. Including the appropriate sequence of events, as well as a conflict is key. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing. STANDARDS: Meets CCSS Writing standards for grades 2-5. Don't forget to check out the Chef's Toolbox, Superhero's Toolbox, and Astronaut's Toolbox activities for more fun! These activities can be used with a whole class in addition to the writing challenge printable. This printable is optimal for 2nd-5th graders who enjoy learning about space and demonstrating their knowledge of it. By using the included matrix to choose the setting, challenge, and characters in their story, they'll use the freedom afforded them to create something they love. *Note, some learners may require a basic explanation of what stocks, investments, and savings accounts are. BONUS: Take advantage of the 4 extension activity ideas included in this printable. These activities will take their writing beyond the page and bring it to life in STEAM-supported outlets. What you'll get: a 4 page PDF including instructions, extension activity ideas, and 3 student pages. One of these pages is simply writing space for you to print off as many copies as you need based on the amount your students are writing. You'll also find the editing checklist to prompt students to edit their own work for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Smart Cookie Game-Part 2 (2022 Version)
Special Resources, Social Skills, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Games

In this Smart Cookie game (2022 version), students try and race each other to be the first one to guess the answer based on one at a time clues after one at a time clicks via Presentation mode on Google Slides. This is based on the wildly popular game Smart A** but more applicable and relevant to elementary-high schoolers. I have included many references to popular t.v. shows and famous people the students born after 2001 would know. This is a trivial pursuit-like game but more fun and students feel more successful. It is just for fun and perfect for Zoom, an ice breaker or indoor recess but they might even learn something! There are 3 categories; Who Am I?, Where Am I?, and What Am I? There are 42 slides for each category. Use in Presentation mode for your class. There are answer sheets at the end for each card so the Game Leader can reference quickly and keep track of the cards used. This is in PowerPoint so the completed cards will turn black after being used for easy game play. In this new 2022 version there are all new cards for each category!

Middle School Math Stations or Centers: Statistics and Probability

Middle School Math Stations or Centers: Statistics and Probability
Math, Percentages, Fractions, Graphing, Statistics, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Centers, Activities

Math stations are a great way to get students engaged as they move about the room and work collaboratively with their peers. But they are a lot of work to prepare! This ready-to-go set of 5 stations will supplement a unit about statistics and probability including probability using dice, spinners, and coins; calculating measures of central tendency- mean, median, and mode; and converting theoretical and experimental probability into percentages. Ways to Use: You can break your class into 5 groups and have them rotate one at a time through the centres, giving them 10-20 minutes at each one. Or, start students at certain centres and then allow them to move around at their own pace as long as no one centre gets too full. I find these are a great resource as you are finishing your unit and preparing for the unit test. Station 1: Students solve four word problems using probability and statistics. Students need to know how to calculate an average. (optional: set out white boards for students to use) Station 2: Students explore the probabilities involved when rolling two dice. (supplies needed: several 6-sided dice) Station 3: Students graph data in a dot plot and calculate measures of central tendency. Students need to know the difference between mean, median, and mode and how to make a dot plot. Station 4: Students play a probability game and compare theoretical and experimental probability (and fairness). (supplies needed: paper clips for spinners) Station 5: Students apply what they have learned to a real-life situation (flipping coins), and practice writing and drawing about their mathematical thinking. (optional: set out laptops or tablets for the online game extension) ***Answer Key Included*** Grades to Use With: These stations will work well in grades 5-8 or high school special education classrooms. Standards: CCSS5.MD.B.2 Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally. CCSS6.SP.A.2 Understand that a set of data collected to answer a statistical question has a distribution which can be described by its center, spread, and overall shape. CCSS6.SP.B.4 Display numerical data in plots on a number line, including dot plots, histograms, and box plots. CCSS6.SP.B.5c Giving quantitative measures of center (median and/or mean) and variability (interquartile range and/or mean absolute deviation), as well as describing any overall pattern and any striking deviations from the overall pattern with reference to the context in which the data were gathered. CCSS7.SP.A.1 Understand that statistics can be used to gain information about a population by examining a sample of the population; generalizations about a population from a sample are valid only if the sample is representative of that population. Understand that random sampling tends to produce representative samples and support valid inferences. CCSS7.SP.C.5 Understand that the probability of a chance event is a number between 0 and 1 that expresses the likelihood of the event occurring. Larger numbers indicate greater likelihood. A probability near 0 indicates an unlikely event, a probability around 1/2 indicates an event that is neither unlikely nor likely, and a probability near 1 indicates a likely event. CCSS7.SP.C.6 Approximate the probability of a chance event by collecting data on the chance process that produces it and observing its long-run relative frequency, and predict the approximate relative frequency given the probability. For example, when rolling a number cube 600 times, predict that a 3 or 6 would be rolled roughly 200 times, but probably not exactly 200 times. Many of our students love learning in a variety of ways and music is one of those! We can retain information better when we hear it through songs and visual videos. This is one reason we like to incorporate music in our learning environments. We don’t have to limit music to music class only for our students. In my store, you’ll find a wide array of music resources that students will love to learn from. This is a music video for your math students in 4th – 6th grade. The title of this song is “The Divisible Man.” This is a song and video that will have students learn about divisible numbers. This video provides explanations and many examples to support student learning. You can implement this video at the introduction of teaching this math skill. The objective is for students to utilize their understanding of divisible numbers and be able to correctly divide numbers. This would be a song that I play multiple times for my students across the course of this unit . It is an MP4 file, so you can download it and have the option of embedding it into any slideshow you may be using for instruction. I hope you enjoy!
