Grocery Game: Estimating, Adding, and Multiplying Decimals

Grocery Game: Estimating, Adding, and Multiplying Decimals
Life Studies, Math, Addition and Subtraction, Addition, Decimals, Multiplication and Division, Division, Money, Home Economics, Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, Activities, Games

This powerpoint presentation is based on the popular game show "The Price Is Right." It is a fun, whole class activity that you need to be able to project in your classroom on an interactive whiteboard or screen-share for distance learning. As students play along, they practice estimating to stay within a shopping budget. They have to multiply and add with decimal numbers: all helpful realistic applications. My students absolutely love playing this game , and I have included three rounds so you can play more than once! Instructions: 1) Decide on a target range. A higher range will require more challenging multiplication. If the range is tighter, it will be more difficult to win. I usually use a range such as $50-$52. 2) Tell students they must buy at least 4 of the 5 products. Students need to have a piece of paper and a pencil for calculations. 3) Choose a student to pick the first product. She needs to estimate the price for one of them, decide how many she wants to buy, and estimate how much that will cost. “I think the cheese is about $5, I want 3, so that will be around $15.” 4) Then show the price (by moving the red box with your cursor), and all students calculate the cost by hand. For example, 3 x 5.75 = 17.25. This is the start of the running total. 5) Choose another student to buy the second product. Again, have him or her estimate before calculating. Then allow all the students to calculate the cost of the second product. For example 4 x 3.19 = 12.76. 6) Now students have to switch from multiplying to adding decimals. They add the price of the second product to their running total. 17.25 + 12.76 = 30.01 7) Continue with the third, fourth, and fifth (if necessary) product. 8) Students try to spend between $50-52. It’s not always easy! Talk to the class about different strategies such as saving an inexpensive product for the end. If you like this Grocery Game , try another one! Fall Edition Winter Edition

Ice Cream Graph Activity

Ice Cream Graph Activity
Math, Graphing, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Activities

If you are looking for exciting and impactful ways to have students practice with organizing data and graphing, look no more! This is an Ice Cream Graph Activity for your students to take part in. It may be used best with 2nd – 5th grade math students. In this data and graphing activity, students will collect data on their favorite ice cream flavors before organizing it into a graph. Here’s what the lesson might look like as an introduction to, or review of, graphing… o Explain to the students that they will be choosing the flavor of ice cream they like the best out of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate chip. o Give each student an ice cream cone and allow time for them to color it according to the flavor they’ve chosen. It must look like that flavor, or it won’t count as useful data! o As students finish coloring their ice cream cones, have them tape their cones randomly to the board. o When all ice cream cones have been taped to the board, ask the class some questions. The point is to show students that it’s very difficult to read this data because it isn’t organized. This is where graphing comes in very handy! o You may either do this yourself or ask for student helpers but sort out the cones according to flavors on the board. Explain that the students will be making a pictograph on their own paper while you make one either on the floor or on a board all students can see. o Together, create a graph for these ice cream flavors. Students will need to decide on a title and a key. o When the graph is complete, discuss the kinds of answers someone can determine from this graph (e.g., 4 students like vanilla the best, more students like chocolate than chocolate chip, etc.) As a class, make a list of possible questions you could ask others to answer based on the data shown on your graph. I hope you enjoy! Sorting Activity: Animals - Non-identicals

Sorting Activity: Animals - Non-identicals
Special Resources, Special Education Needs (SEN), Math, Early Math, Science, Basic Science, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Activities

This downloadable PDF is an educational activity that involves sorting non-identical animals. Why we teach sorting and grouping - Sorting and grouping are important skills for young children to learn because they lay the foundation for many other important academic and life skills. Sorting and grouping involve categorizing objects based on common attributes such as color, shape, size, and function. These skills help children to understand and make sense of the world around them. This activity begins by presenting the learner with two large cards, one depicting a dog and the other a cat, to introduce the two animal categories. Then, the learner is given 12 smaller cards, 6 with different pictures of a dog and 6 with different pictures of a cat. The task is to sort the smaller cards into two piles, one for dogs and the other for cats, based on the animal depicted in the picture. The learner is encouraged to observe and compare the pictures to identify the distinguishing features of each animal and group them accordingly. As the learner progresses, the activity can be made more challenging by introducing pictures of animals that are similar such as a horse and a cow, to test their ability to differentiate between similar but unrelated objects. This activity can be used to promote several learning outcomes- visual discrimination classification critical thinking skills It is also a fun and engaging way for learners to explore and learn about different types of animals while practicing essential cognitive skills. This activity was created to be an activity book. However, feel free to print and create to fit your needs. This is a ten-page book with twenty different animals to sort. The different animals can be switched out and rearranged on the different pages to fit the individual learner. Enjoy IFIO girl I'll Figure It Out
