Paper Helicopter STEM Project: Gr 5-7 Scientific Method Mini Unit

Paper Helicopter STEM Project: Gr 5-7 Scientific Method Mini Unit
Science, Basic Science, Technology, Engineering, STEM, Grade 5, 6, 7, Activities

Here's a great science mini-unit for the start of the year to help your middle school or intermediate students learn about the scientific method, design, and independent variables in a fun and hands-on way! This is also a great project to complete before a science fair unit! How to Use: Print a booklet (double-sided) for each student with pages 2-9. Print a single page 10 for each student. o Types of Variables: Read through as a class, give students time to identify the mistake, and teach students the three types of variables. o Designing Experiments : Students can work in pairs or small groups to think of how they would design experiments for the following situations. Come back together and share as a class, then ensure students complete the bottom section on their own to assess comprehension. o Paper Helicopter STEM Activity: Carefully go through the instructions. Choose a date in a couple of weeks for Registration Day (students will need at least 3 hours of class time to test models). The class after that can be Finals Day. Next, students use their single sheet (p. 10) to make the initial design and test it several times to see how long it takes to fall. o Helicopter Logbook: Students make at least three new designs. Each time they should only change one variable from the previous design. So, they could first change the wing length. After that, they could change the type of paper, and finally, they could change the size of the model, etc. Each time they explain, predict, make the model, observe 3 trials, and reflect. o Registration Day: Once students have tested at least 3 designs and have their best one, they make a fresh template of that design to hand in. Finals Day: Students have 10 minutes to create their final helicopter from their template. Everyone tests three times, and the class winner can be determined! [Note: The best design usually ends up being a simple, tiny square of paper!] o Reflection: Students complete the three questions and put all their pages together to be marked out of 50.

All students need are 6- or 10-sided dice and scrap paper or a whiteboard! Instructions: Here’s a fun way to practice multiplication facts with a friend. Roll several dice. Cathedrals of the Middle Ages

Cathedrals of the Middle Ages
Social Studies, History, History: British, History: Europe, History: World, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Activities

Teach your students about the cathedrals of the Middle Ages with this engaging activity. LESSON GOAL Students understand the role that cathedrals played in the religious life of people during the Middle Ages. Sections in the reading texts include information on pilgrimages, the architecture of cathedrals, religious art, and relics. TEXT EXAMPLE "During the Middle Ages, local churches played a very important role not only in people’s religious, but also their daily lives. In most places people were actually required to go to church on Sundays by law. Those who refused could be fined or even imprisoned. Churches also provided baptism for newborn babies, marriages, and funerals. Merchants and traders often held markets around churches, paying a fee to do so. Christians during the Middle Ages were also encouraged to go on pilgrimages – religious journeys – to famous holy places. Many people travelled as far as the Holy Land to visit Jerusalem – the place where they believed Jesus had been crucified and then had risen from the dead. Other popular pilgrimage destinations included Rome – where many early Christian leaders had lived and died – and the Spanish city of Compostela." PROJECTS After completing their research, students are asked to create a poster advertising a cathedral and the different attractions it would have for visitors. Project sheets are provided in a variety of different formats for you to pick from. ADDITIONAL MATERIALS The file also contains image and crossword sheets as well as information sheets with more details about five of Europe's most famous cathedrals; Chartres, Canterbury, Lincoln, Westminster Abbey, and Durham

The Constitution is A Living Document: A Project to Assess Knowledge and Understanding

The Constitution is A Living Document: A Project to Assess Knowledge and Understanding
Social Studies, Government, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Projects, Activities

The most important thing about this project, The Consitution is a Living Document, is how students truly internalize how the Constitution is not just some old stuffy document but really is alive in our lives and protects our rights and our democracy. I have had students come back to me when they are in high school to tell me how much they got out of this project. I have also had several students tell me they helped their immigrant parents pass the citizenship test. They were able to teach their parents about our government. My favorite is how many 8th-grade students tell me they are now interested in current events and regularly follow the news! The purpose of this project, The Consitution is a Living Document, is to assess students’ knowledge and understanding of the Constitution. The project is divided into 3 sections. The first section focuses on the Constitution, particularly Articles 1, 2, and 3. They will write an essay and then read 3 news articles that connect to each of these articles. They will summarize the articles and analyze how this news event connects to each of these articles. In Section 2, students will write an essay on the Bill of Rights and Amendments and read 7 more current events news articles, summarize them, and then analyze how each event connects to a specific amendment. The third section includes a Conclusion essay in which they reflect back on what they learned about themselves, doing a project of this magnitude, and about the Constitution, and a Bibliography. This is a comprehensive project and will take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks. For each section, I provide lesson plans with objectives and learning targets aligned with the Common Core Standards. teacher directions, student directions, handouts, graphic organizers, check-off sheets, and rubrics. This project could be easily modified to fit a shorter time frame. With modifications, it is appropriate for students in 6th through 12th grades. This project is part of my unit: “Our Living Consitution” which is designed using the Into, Through, and Beyond model of lesson planning. This project can be taught independently, but it is an excellent summative assessment for all my lessons on the Constitution in my unit. The lessons in the Constitution unit can be used independently or as a supplement to what you already teach or as a whole. Here is a summary of what is in the unit: Into Lessons: Creating Schema Lesson 1: Overview of the Constitution of the United States of America Slideshow and Notetaker Lesson 2: Origins of the Constitution Essential Terms and Notetaker Lesson 3: The Seven Principles of the Constitution Through Lessons: Learning the Content Lesson 4: The Goals of the Preamble, which includes a Preamble Project Lesson 5: The Three Branches of Government: Articles 1, 2, and 3 Lesson 6: How a Bill Becomes a Law and Project Lesson 7: Federalism and the System of Checks and Balances Lesson 8: Articles 4-7 Lesson 9: The Bill of Rights Unit (and a Little About Amendments 11-27) Extras (from the Unit: Every Four Years… The Presidential Election) Lesson 10: What Are Your Political Viewpoints? Lesson 11: Major and Minor Political Parties Lesson 12: A Brief History of Who Can Vote Lesson 13: Nuts and Bolts of the Presidential Election Beyond Lessons: Summative Assessments Study Guides and Tests are included, with many of the lessons Two Comprehensive Projects to Assess Knowledge and Understanding: --The Constitution is a Living Document Project --The Bill of Rights Explained Project
