Book Jacket Book Report
ELA, Literature, Reading, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Activities, Projects

This is an engaging Book Jacket Book Report for your middle school students! This book report can be genre-specific or it can be assigned to any book your students might choose to read. (For example, if you assign a genre-specific book, such as mystery or fantasy, this book report lends itself. But if you allow kids to choose any genre they are interested in, this book report works for that as well.) You can use the Book Jacket Book Report as a summative assessment after you’ve taught students about character, the elements of fiction, and how to write a summary and a short book review. I give my students 4-5 weeks to complete the project. Included in this packet are the following: --objectives and learning targets that are aligned with the Common Core Standards --detailed lesson plans --clear student-friendly directions --templates --an opportunity for students to reflect on their project and what they have learned about themselves as readers and as creators of the project --a grading sheet for teachers. Although you could easily modify this project digitally, students enjoy reading each other's book jackets (which is part of the lesson plan), and they make a great bulletin board. Multi-Step Problems with Rational Numbers NOTES & PRACTICE

Multi-Step Problems with Rational Numbers NOTES & PRACTICE
Math, Algebra, Grade 7, Activities

This resource was developed to meet the requirements of the 7th Grade Expressions & Equations Standards below: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.EE .B.3 Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate; and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies. For example: If a woman making $25 an hour gets a 10% raise, she will make an additional 1/10 of her salary an hour, or $2.50, for a new salary of $27.50. If you want to place a towel bar 9 3/4 inches long in the center of a door that is 27 1/2 inches wide, you will need to place the bar about 9 inches from each edge; this estimate can be used as a check on the exact computation.

Middle School Math Stations: or Centers: Percent, Decimals, Fractions

Middle School Math Stations: or Centers: Percent, Decimals, Fractions
Math, Percentages, Decimals, Fractions, Grade 5, 6, 7, Centers, Activities

Even when students are in middle school or the intermediate grades, they benefit from a variety of teaching strategies including the use of stations or centres! But they are a lot of work to prepare! This ready-to-go set of 5 stations will supplement a unit about fractions, decimals, and percent. Ways to Use: You can break your class into 5 groups and have them rotate one at a time through the centres, giving them 10-20 minutes at each one. Or, start students at certain centres and then allow them to move around at their own pace as long as no one centre gets too full. I find these are a great resource as you are finishing your unit and preparing for the unit test. Station 1: Students solve four word problems using percentages. (optional: set out white boards for students to use) Station 2: Students play a game to practice calculating sales & tax. (supplies needed: 6-sided dice) Station 3: Students design a floor plan and calculate what percent of the space each room occupies. Station 4: Students practice converting between percent, decimals, and fractions and play an online game . (optional: set out laptops or tablets for the online game extension) Station 5: Students apply what they have learned to a real-life problem, and practice writing and drawing about their mathematical thinking. Grades to Use With: These stations work well for grades 5-7 or high school special education classes. Standards: CCSS6.RP.A.3c Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent. CCSS7.RP.A.2a Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin. If you like these stations, check out other ones in my store: 5 Stations for Adding/Subtracting Integers 5 Stations for Early Algebra Concepts 5 Stations for Area, Perimeter, and Volume
