This product's purpose is twofold: 1) introduce students to the propaganda and beliefs Americans held during the Cold War, 2) to provide a viewing guide with Cold War connections for Rocky IV. The movie “Rocky IV” was made in 1985 during a period of the Cold War when tensions were boiling between the United States and the Soviet Union (USSR). The film pits the world-boxing champion Rocky Balboa (an American) against the Russian, Ivan Drago (supported by the Soviet Union). The movie reflects Cold War attitudes and many people consider it propaganda intended to portray the Soviet Union as evil and as cheaters. During the movie, the American hero Rocky is able to overcome the odds against him and not only defeat the bigger, stronger Russian, but also win over the people of the Soviet Union at the same time. As students watch the movie, they will be asked to analyze some of the situations in the movie using thier “Cold War” glasses (there are a total of five Cold War connections). The movie is more than just a boxing drama; it is a movie about the major attitudes and beliefs Americans held during the Cold War. In short, the movie encapsulates some of the fears that Americans held about the Soviet Union. Lastly, after the movie you will be asked to make some connections to the Cold War conflicts and to use supporting evidence from the movie to justify your answers.

"The Coercive Acts and the First Continental Congress" - A History Play

I love using this when we are in our Road to Revolution unit . It is a fun way to learn about the punishments of the Coercive Acts and the emergency meeting of the Continental Congress. I organize a table in the middle of the room with a Union Jack flag sitting somewhere on it. I make the table look official with some other props, too. Off to the side I put a chair for my "throne". The King and Baines stay in that area. The Members of Parliament sit around the table first. They change places with the Colonists later in the play. Afterwards, we debrief and I ask them questions about what the Coercive Acts (each one) and then what was accomplished at the First Continental Congress.

In this 10 page activity (GOOGLE and Traditional version provided), students will be learning about Article III of the US Constitution: The American Judicial system and how it is actually made up of two separate court systems: the federal court system and state court system. They will also learn the differences in jurisdiction between federal courts and state courts and how cases are either criminal or civil. Students will: 1) Watch a short introductory video on the Judicial system (Federal V. State Courts) (free public access) and complete a corresponding worksheet as a warm-up activity . 2) Complete notes using a creative graphic organizer on the differences between Federal and State Courts and their areas of jurisdiction. 3) Work in small groups or pairs to complete a card sort, matching activity in which their must identify the jurisdiction of each sample court case.
