If you want to give students extra practice with place value, I have just the resource for you. What You Get: This is a set of Place Value Activity Sheets that was designed for 2nd grade students who are working on or have mastered place value with higher digit numbers. It may be a great fit for 3rd grade students who need additional practice. It also works well as a review for students. It is a 4-page printable. How To Implement This Resource: You can print off enough copies of this worksheet for each student to have. You may also choose to print only a few copies and laminate those. If you choose to laminate them, students can use dry erase markers to write answers. This is a great way to turn this into a math center or small group activity. The first two pages have tables for students to complete. Students will look at the number in the first column and use that number to complete the following two columns. All numbers are 2-digit or 3-digit numbers. The other 2 columns are: -- What do the digits mean? (6 TENS + 3 UNITS) -- Sum and Total (60 + 3 = 63) The last two pages will have 10 problems for students to complete. Each problem will have place value cards broken up into hundreds, tens, and units. Students will write what number that makes when put together. This is great as an independent assignment, but students may also work together in small groups or partners to complete it. Math, Decimals, Place Value, Grade 5, 6, 7, Centers, Activities

This ready-to-print set of 5 stations or math centres will supplement a middle school geometry unit about place value: including numbers from the hundred millions to the millionths. I have included lots of real-life examples such as populations of countries around the world and actual Olympic luge results that are measured to the thousandth of a second. Math stations are an excellent way to get students engaged as they move about the room and work cooperatively with their peers. Even when students are in intermediate grades, they benefit from a variety of teaching strategies including the use of stations to make math class more interactive. Station 1: Students can work collaboratively to solve four word problems about place value. (optional: set out white boards for students to use) Station 2: Students explore decimal place value to the millionths with a random number generating dice game. (supplies needed: 2-sided counter or coin AND a 10-sided die to generate numbers) Station 3: Students explore the populations of countries to practice place value skills such as rounding, expanded form, and comparing large numbers. (supplies needed: access to the internet to find the populations) Station 4: Students compare real times (measured to the thousandths) from the men’s luge at the 2018 Winter Olympics. They identify and compare different decimal place values. Station 5: Students explain their mathematical thinking in words and pictures to answer a math journal prompt. (supplies needed: tablets or computers for online game extension) ***Answer Key Included*** Grades to Use With: These stations are designed for middle grades students (grades 5-7) or high school special education classrooms. 5 Minute Games Bundle: Super Simple No-Prep Games for Elementary Students (ELA & Math)

5 Minute Games Bundle: Super Simple No-Prep Games for Elementary Students (ELA & Math)
ELA, Math, Early Math, Place Value, Grammar, Language Development, Vocabulary, Spelling, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, Activities, Games

Here are four quick no-prep games for any elementary classroom. They address topics including math, spelling, syllables, rhyme, vocabulary, parts of speech, geography, & critical and creative thinking. Each of the 4 games has its own page of instructions including the skills taught, different player configurations, rules, a sample round, and extension ideas. These games require NO PREP and NO MATERIALS other than writing implements. I suggest whiteboards to save paper. Grades to Use With: These games can be used in any elementary classroom (grades K-8). They are great for the following uses: - Morning/home-room warm-up - TOC back-up activities - To fill the 5 minutes before lunch or the end of the day - As a reward for small-group or one-to-one tutoring The four games are: - 4 Letter Word Game : Start with a 4-letter word on the paper/whiteboard. Players/teams take turns changing one letter at a time to make a new English word. Play until you are stuck or time runs out. - Guess My Number Game : Start with a range based on your students (ex: 1-20 for K, 1-100 for Gr 1-4, 1-200 for Gr 5-7). The teacher (or student if playing in pairs) thinks of a number in that range. The other student (or whole class) has exactly 5 questions of greater than or less than to narrow it down. After 5 questions, they must guess the number. - The Rhyme Game : Start with a word that has many rhymes. (For example: tent, rant, king, see, you.) Do NOT choose duck for obvious reasons. Each student (or each team) has two minutes to make a list of as many rhyming words as they can. Points are counted based on syllables. The longer the word, the more points. After two minutes, tally the scores to find the winner. - Categories: Start by writing 5 categories from the following options on the board: animals, cities, verbs, fruits, toys, pet names, countries, adjectives, beverages, colours, holidays, vehicles, movies, kitchen tools, flowers, books. Then choose one letter of the alphabet. Students get two minutes to think of a word for each category staring with that letter.

Riddle Me This Place Value Activity

Riddle Me This Place Value Activity
Math, Place Value, Grade 2, 3, Activities

Riddle Me This is an engaging math activity for your 2nd and 3rd grade students to review place value. If you’re looking for an outside-the-box way to work on (or review) place value with your students, you’ve come to the right place! In this packet you will find 15 clue cards: ten are on a third-grade level, five are a bit more challenging, and one is a blank card for students to use to create their own place value riddle. Students will read the clues to help them solve the riddle of “Which number are we looking for?” There is a work-mat for students to use to write down digits as they solve the riddles and a line for their answers. These cards may be used as a daily self-starter/morning work activity , one larger math activity to complete in one or two days, or as center/daily five activities. They can be used for individual problem solving, group problem solving, or whole class problem solving. After the kids have had experience with the clue cards, they can create their own place value clue card on the blank template. It’s fun to let students solve each other’s riddles if there’s time. Otherwise, it’s a good indicator of whether there is understanding or not. Tips It can be a lot of paper to copy the cards for everyone. You can save paper, time, and energy by doing stations. Copy each clue card on cardstock (laminate if you’d like or have access to a laminator) and place one at each station. Once students have had time to solve a riddle, they’ll rotate to the next clue card. The work-mats are numbered so it will still be easy to check as a whole class. Another idea would be to copy the cards 4 to a page by going to print, clicking on full page slides, and choosing either four slides vertical or four slides horizontal. This would make for smaller copies and less paper!

Critical Thinking: Math in the Media: Finding Errors Witness your students transform into math detectives with this fun educational tool! Students can practice both math skills and media literacy at the same time as they read real headlines and try to decide if they make sense mathematically. This unique teaching resource uses real headlines and quotes taken directly from various media sources. It presents learners with an opportunity to scrutinize these bits of information for mathematical inaccuracies. How to Use: Teachers can project these pages on an interactive whiteboard or print them out as worksheets—providing flexibility to adapt the delivery according to classroom needs or personal preferences. Allow students to work together in small groups or pairs to look at the headlines and decide if there are any math errors. Students need to explain what the error is if they find one. Topics covered include large numbers, percentages, and large number multiplication (in the millions). Come back together as a class to discuss and share ideas. You could have individual students come up to the board to explain their thought process and strategies. You could use several headlines in one lesson, or use them one at a time as a warm-up or hook for your math class. An extension is provided for students to find (or create) their own headlines. You could have each student do this and present one each day for several weeks. Grades to Use With: These are designed to be used in middle school classrooms in grades 6-9 to enhance media literacy, critical thinking skills, and application of math skills. Math skills used include percentages, large numbers, and decimal millions. What's Included: A total of 10 pages: Title Page Instruction Page 6 Headlines (one per page): 4 have errors and 2 do not Extension Page: Find your own headline! Answer Key
