Middle School Math Stations or Centers: Early Algebra: Patterns, Expressions, Tables, Graphing, and Equations

Math stations are a great way to get students engaged as they move about the room and work collaboratively with their peers. But they are a lot of work to prepare! This ready-to-go set of 5 stations will supplement a unit about early algebra concepts: patterns, expressions, tables, graphing & equations. Ways to Use: You can break your class into 5 groups and have them rotate one at a time through the centres, giving them 10-20 minutes at each one. Or, start students at certain centres and then allow them to move around at their own pace as long as no one centre gets too full. I find these are a great resource as you are finishing your unit and preparing for the unit test. Station 1: Word problems (Optional: set out white boards for students to use): These four word problems are about realistic situations involving money, memberships, and patterns. There is also a question that gets students thinking about how to solve equations using very simple numbers. Station 2: Partner game to practice evaluating expressions. Students play an "input/output machine" game with a partner. They will mentally evaluate simple expressions until their partner can guess which expression they are using from the chart. Then they switch roles. Station 3: Students create a growing pattern and write an expression to represent it. (Supplies needed: some kind of counters or cubes to make the pattern) I find my students often struggle to figure out the expression for a pattern in a table. One trick I use is to teach them to "Mind the Gap!" Look for the "gap" in the second column of the pattern. In this case it is increasing by 4. Always multiply that number by the variable, therefore 4n. Then see what you have to add or subtract to make it true for all of the inputs (in this case +2). Station 4: Practice solving one-step equations and graphing simple patterns. Students can use multiple methods to solve the one-step equations. Then they graph the growth of two plants and notice when one grows taller and why. Station 5: Students explain their thinking about equations in words in response to a journal prompt. Optional extension: online game to practice solving equations in a step-by-step manner. Grades to Use With: These stations could work with grades 5-8 or high school special education classes. Students can practice reading comprehension skills with these IN word family mats. Students can practice reading IN words in isolation and in the context of sentences. The words in this set follow a CVC or CCVC spelling pattern. Included in this resource: This resource includes one word mat and one sentence mat, both for reading IN words in insolation and in context. There are also picture cards that correspond with each word and sentence. To complete this activity, students will read each IN word or sentence on the mat and then match the corresponding pictures. Students can work independently or with a partner to complete this activity. How to Use these Id word Family Mats: The students can simply lay the images on top of the word or sentence. Mixed Questions The mixed questions section of each lesson includes a variation of five comprehension, vocabulary and math questions. In addition, key reading strategies are frequently covered including cause & effect, summarizing, compare & contrast and making conclusions. As it can become quite mundane doing the same activities over and over, each lesson in a set will contain a different spelling and vocab activity . Activities include: spelling games, sentence match-ups, mixed-up text and decoding words from the lesson. Writing Prompts Writing prompts are designed to continue the theme or lessons learned in the story. Students are persuaded to write in a variety of ways and each prompt includes several cues to help. As with the spelling/vocab section, writing prompts will vary. This includes research pieces, reading responses, poetry and creative writing prompts. Letter X Phonics and Writing Centers with Real Photographs

This letter X beginning and ending sounds and handwriting activity includes real photographs to practice learning to recognize, write and identify the sound of the letter X. Each picture has bold colors and includes easily recognized pictures. Each activity can be used in a literacy center for students to practice letter recognition. What is Included: There is an instructional page with printing instructions. There are letter X posters with various letter X words. There are handwriting task cards that allow students to practice writing the letter X as well as words that end with the letter X. There are beginning sound clip cards that allow students to practice clipping the images that begin with the letter X. There is a sorting activity where you sort pictures that end with X from words that do not end with X. The letter X sorting cards that can also be used to play memory, matching, or concentration games. These cards can also be used during a lesson in a pocket chart as well as for a center display. When to Use: All of the activities make great literacy centers, by placing each set of activities in the center and letting students complete activities alone or with a partner. These activities make great morning tub activities. Just place these activities in morning bins for students to complete as their classmates arrive to class. Skills Assessed: These activities assess letter recognition skills, beginning/ending sounds, handwriting, and sorting skills. Each activity in this set is low prep. Each activity just needs to be printed out, cut apart, and laminated if desired. When you laminate the writing cards, you can create a writing center activity that is reusable is you add dry erase markers. The handwriting cards and beginning sound clip cards can be turned into task box activities.

In this SEL product, you will get SEL Flashcards for Social Emotional Learning. You will also get SEL coloring pages because there are two different pages of emotions/feelings. Both pages have a black and white version and a color version. The black and white version allows your students to color their own faces and images. The emotions listed are; happy, sad, silly, proud, shy confused, scared, excited, angry, tired, loving, sick, disgusted, cry, jealous, disappointed. These flashcards can be used for so many purposes. I have used these flashcards for Go Fish games where the students have to ask for a certain feeling. You will need to make two copies of the colored emotions poster to make this game work. If a student asks for "angry" and the student they asked has it, that student give the card to the one who asked and that student places the match down on the table and names a time they felt angry. I have also used this resource for memory games. You would, again, make two copies of each emotion. Then you would mix up the cards and place them face down (I would highly recommend cardstock) in a random order. Students then would choose two cards and reveal the emotion cards. If they are a match, then the student can share when they have felt that way. If it is not a match, they would place the cards face down again the the next student would take a turn. This is a fun and interactive game but also helps students discuss their feelings in a non-threatening way. This resource can be used as a whole class activity where students color their flashcards and then cut them out. They can randomly pick a card and name a time they felt that way. This can also be used as a center activity for Go Fish or Memory (as I described above). The ways to use these Emotion SEL Flashcards are endless!
