Students can work on this counting center independently, in pairs, or in small groups to complete. You can add manipulatives for students to cover each letter W as they count if they need a more hands on approach, or a more guided way to practice counting each letter W. Students can practice reading comprehension skills with these IP word family mats. Students can practice reading IP words in isolation and in the context of sentences. The words in this set follow a CVC or CCVC spelling pattern. Included in this resource: This resource includes one word mat and one sentence mat, both for reading IP words in insolation and in context. There are also picture cards that correspond with each word and sentence. To complete this activity, students will read each IP word or sentence on the mat and then match the corresponding pictures. Students can work independently or with a partner to complete this activity. How to Use these IP word Family Mats: The students can simply lay the images on top of the word or sentence. They can be placed in a file folder utilizing hook and loop fasteners to attach the images. A magnetic activity can be created by using a baking sheet and magnets to affix the images. Beginning Sound Sort

This beginning sound sort is a great hands on activity for recognizing the most common sound of each letter of the alphabet. This is an easy and fun activity to give students who need practice with recognizing or for those students who need extra practice distinguishing between the initial sounds in words. To complete this sorting activity , students will look at a picture cards to determine what sound the picture starts with, and then the students will place the card on the correct mat. This sort uses real photographs so students will easily recognize each image card. This sorting activity includes: One sorting mat for each letter of the alphabet 6 picture cards for each letter of the alphabet This beginning sound sort can be used in the following ways Literacy Center: The teacher can place this sort in a literacy center for students to complete. Morning Work: These worksheets make a great, easy to set up activity for students to complete as classmates arrive to class. Quiet Time Activity: Students who do not nap can complete this sort while their classmates rest. Small Group Activity: Teachers can call aside small groups of students who need more help with sound recognition to complete these in a small group setting. Early Finishers: Students who finish their classroom assignments early can help fill the extra time by completing one of these worksheets. Emergency Sub Plans - These easy to assign worksheets allows subs to provide an engaging activity with little effort or planning. If making a file folder game, the teacher will place the mats on either side of the folder and use hook and loop fasteners to sort the pictures. Skills assessed: Initial Sound for each letter of the alphabet Distinguishing between different beginning sounds. Ability to sort the picture cards on to the correct mat This beginning sounds sorting activity is a low prep activity . All a teacher needs to do is to print the pages, cut out the picture cards, and laminate the pages and cards if desired. The activity is easy to set up and to put away and store.
