Transition & Inner‑Transition Elements Flashcards – Chemistry Symbol and Name Matching Set Holiday Theme: Christmas This is a printable flashcard set I’ve used in chemistry classes, mostly with upper secondary students. The cards focus on the transition and inner transition elements. So we’re talking about the d-block and f-block – the ones students often find harder to remember, especially when they all start sounding similar. I usually bring this out in December when we’re still covering content but everyone’s a bit tired and ready for a change of pace. The cards have either the element’s name or its symbol. Students have to match the two, and they can do that in pairs or small groups. It works like a memory game or just a straight matching activity, depending on how much time we have. Some years I use the cards just for review, other times we build sorting activities around them. Like dividing the metals into transition, lanthanides and actinides. It depends on the group. Advanced students sometimes add a use or a property for each element as they go, which makes it more of a challenge. There are a lot of cards – over 250 – but I don’t always use them all. You can just print the ones you need. I usually go with thicker paper or cardstock, and if I have time, I laminate them so they last. Once cut, I keep them in envelopes and reuse them next year. The design has a winter look – nothing too bright or distracting, just something that makes it feel a bit more seasonal without being silly. I’ve found it helpful for lessons when you still want students to work with real content, but in a way that feels relaxed. Especially useful before the holidays or at the end of a topic on metals. The second learning game will build confidence in letter and sound recognition. Finally, a learning activity for the whole class is included in a Power Point format. I Have, Who Has? – Chemistry Element Symbols Game - Christmas Edition I started using this game as a simple way to review the periodic table, especially the main group elements. Over time, it’s become one of those go-to activities that just work – low prep, easy to explain, and students are surprisingly focused once it gets going. The idea is simple: each student gets one or more cards. A card might say, “I have Na. Who has the symbol for Oxygen?” Whoever has the right answer reads their card next, and the round continues until all cards are used. It’s nothing fancy, but it gets students speaking, listening, and thinking about element names and symbols without it feeling like a quiz. What I like is that you can use the game in different ways, depending on the class. In some groups, I stick to the first 20 elements. In others, we go all the way up to element 118. There are also versions where only the names are shown, only the symbols, or a mix of both – so you can adjust the difficulty. I’ve used it with students from grades 8 to 11, sometimes as a warm-up, sometimes as a review at the end of a unit. The materials are printable and easy to store. I’ve printed mine on colored paper to help sort the different versions. Laminating helps if you plan to reuse the cards from year to year, but even unlaminated sets hold up pretty well for a few rounds. It’s a quiet way to reinforce chemistry basics, especially when students need to move a bit or when you want to switch things up without losing content. Periodic Table Elements Domino Game – Christmas Chemistry Activity During the last week before winter break, I like to keep my lessons calm but still connected to content. This chemistry domino game has worked well in that context. It gives students a chance to revisit the periodic table in a light way, without feeling like they’re doing a full review worksheet. The game is made up of cards that show either the name of an element or its chemical symbol. Students connect the matching parts, so that the end of one card links to the start of the next, just like with a regular domino set. I included all 118 elements, from Hydrogen to Oganesson, so there’s enough variety for most grade levels. Depending on the group, I sometimes let them use a periodic table as support. In other classes, we turn it into more of a memory challenge. Some students take it seriously and try to build the longest chain, others enjoy working in pairs or small groups just to go over what they remember. The cards have a light seasonal theme, which fits well with December lessons. They can be printed on heavier paper, and I usually store them in envelopes or folders by element groups if I want to use them again the next year. No extra materials are needed beyond scissors and maybe a bit of tape or a surface to build on. The setup doesn’t take long, and the atmosphere is usually relaxed. Students still talk about chemistry, especially when they help each other with tricky symbols. It works well in classes where energy is low but you still want them engaged in something subject-related. All the cards and a short set of instructions are included. I’ve used it in different grade levels, and it’s easy to adjust depending on time and ability.
