This set of Winter-themed learning activities is the perfect addition to your ELA curriculum. Your kiddos in Pre-K, TK, kindergarten, and grade 1 will benefit from the variety of activities this product offers. Within the pages you will find 16 flashcards with pictures and their corresponding word labels, 7 worksheets, 2 hands-on learning games, and 1 additional learning game in a Power Point format. Not only will these learning tools help strengthen vocabulary, but they’ll also give your pre-readers the opportunity to practice the concepts of identifying uppercase and lowercase letters and phonemic awareness. The 16 Winter-themed words are used throughout each activity and focus on holidays such as Christmas, Hanukkah, and Valentine’s Day. There are also terms that relate directly to the season of Winter such as hibernation, penguins, and snowflakes. Along with the aforementioned areas of learning, your learners will also practice fundamental fine motor skills with writing letters, cutting, gluing, and manipulating clothes pins. The flashcards and 2 hands-on learning games are available in both a color version and a black & white version. Most of the worksheets are also available in both versions. The 25 Power Point slides were created in a full-color version to entice and engage your learners. While the Power Point activity was designed as a whole class learning game, the 2 additional games are wonderful individual or small learning group activities. The 7 worksheets can be used in a variety of ways including large or small groups, individually, or a homework assignment. For your convenience, an answer key is provided for all worksheets. Below are the details of each activity included in this product. PAGES 1-3: Sixteen flashcards with pictures and word labels PAGE 4: learners will circle one of two letters that show the beginning sound of the winter picture. PAGE 5: learners will draw lines matching the beginning sound of a winter picture and its letter partner. PAGE 6: learners will color the “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” symbol to show if the given letter matches the beginning sound of the winter picture. PAGE 7: learners will cut and glue letters to the winter picture that matches the beginning sound. PAGE 8: learners will color one of two winter pictures that have the beginning sound of the letter shown. PAGE 9: learners will write the uppercase and lowercase letters of the winter picture’s beginning sound. PAGE 10: learners will write the first letter of a winter word that shows its beginning sound. PAGES 11-14: learners will place labeled clothespins or letter tiles at the beginning of each winter word to show the word’s beginning sound. Christmas Number Domino – Match Numbers and Number Words (0–30) I like using this Christmas number domino set when we need something calm but still meaningful in the weeks before winter break. Students match numbers with the written number words and gradually build one long domino chain together. The set focuses on numbers from 0 to 30. Each card shows a numeral on one side and the matching number word on the other. Students connect the cards by finding the correct matches, which also practices number recognition and reading at the same time. There are two versions included. One uses regular number words. The second version shows the words with syllable markings. I created this for students who still need help decoding longer number words or benefit from visual reading support. To make it easier to adapt, there are optional end cards for different ranges. You can limit the activity to 0–10, 0–20, or use the full 0–30 set. I usually start with a smaller range and add more cards once students feel confident. I’ve used this during math centers, for partner work, and also as a quiet early finisher activity. It works well because the structure is clear and students can play without much explanation. The domino cards can be printed on regular paper or on colored paper if you want to keep sets separate. I normally laminate them so they last for several seasons. Blank cards are included in case you want to add your own numbers or adjust the set. Transition & Inner‑Transition Elements Flashcards – Chemistry Symbol and Name Matching Set Holiday Theme: Christmas This is a printable flashcard set I’ve used in chemistry classes, mostly with upper secondary students. The cards focus on the transition and inner transition elements. So we’re talking about the d-block and f-block – the ones students often find harder to remember, especially when they all start sounding similar. I usually bring this out in December when we’re still covering content but everyone’s a bit tired and ready for a change of pace. The cards have either the element’s name or its symbol. Students have to match the two, and they can do that in pairs or small groups. It works like a memory game or just a straight matching activity, depending on how much time we have. Some years I use the cards just for review, other times we build sorting activities around them. Like dividing the metals into transition, lanthanides and actinides. It depends on the group. Advanced students sometimes add a use or a property for each element as they go, which makes it more of a challenge. There are a lot of cards – over 250 – but I don’t always use them all. You can just print the ones you need. I usually go with thicker paper or cardstock, and if I have time, I laminate them so they last. Once cut, I keep them in envelopes and reuse them next year. The design has a winter look – nothing too bright or distracting, just something that makes it feel a bit more seasonal without being silly. I’ve found it helpful for lessons when you still want students to work with real content, but in a way that feels relaxed. Especially useful before the holidays or at the end of a topic on metals. Chemistry Flashcards – Match Main Group Element Names and Symbols Holiday Theme: Christmas This is a printable set of flashcards that I put together to help students remember the names and symbols of the elements. I’ve used this kind of thing around December when everyone’s a bit tired but we still want to do something related to chemistry. The cards have either the name of an element or its symbol, and students just try to find the right pairs. It’s simple, but they really do remember more that way. There’s a bit of a seasonal theme to the design, which makes it feel different from the usual review work. You can use the cards in all sorts of ways — I’ve tried it as a memory game, or just as a quiet task for pairs. It depends on the group. For students who are still getting to know the periodic table, I just give them a smaller set with the first 20 or so elements. For stronger groups, they can use the full set and even add extra facts to each card while they’re working. You don’t need anything special to prep the game. I just print the cards on thicker paper and sometimes laminate them if I want to keep them for next year. Once they’re cut out, you can keep them in small envelopes or boxes, depending on how you like to organize your materials. It’s one of those things that’s easy to bring in when you need something hands-on but still subject-related. The students enjoy it more than a worksheet, and they do actually talk about the elements while they play, which is always a win. You can also use it as a station or a warm-up during December lessons.
