Grocery Game: Estimating, Adding, and Multiplying Decimals - Fall Edition
Holiday & Seasonal, Seasons, Fall, Holidays, Back To School, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Math, Decimals, Money, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, Activities, Games
Do you want your students to practice loads of decimal operations and money math without using a worksheet? Try this fun math game that your whole class can play while they pretend to grocery shop and stick to a budget! Here is a brand new version of my popular grocery game. There are three rounds included (Back to School, Halloween, and Thanksgiving) with five food items in each round! This math game allows students to practice estimating, adding, and multiplying with decimal numbers in a fun and engaging way! It is a fun, whole class math game that you need to be able to project in your classroom on an interactive whiteboard. Students follow along using scrap paper or a mini whiteboard to complete their calculations. As students play, they practice estimating to stay within a pre-determined shopping budget. They have to multiply & add with decimal numbers: great applied math! Since this is a PowerPoint Presentation, you are able to move the boxes covering the price of each item after students make their guess: just like a real game show! Instructions: 1) Decide on a target range. A higher range will require more challenging multiplication. If the range is tighter, it will be more difficult to win. I usually use a range such as $50-$52. 2) Tell students they must buy at least 4 of the 5 products. Students need to have a piece of paper and a pencil for calculations. 3) Choose a student to pick the first product. She needs to estimate the price for one of them, decide how many she wants to buy, and estimate how much that will cost. “I think the cheese is about $5, I want 3, so that will be around $15.” 4) Then show the price (by moving the red box with your cursor), and all students calculate the cost by hand. For example, 3 x 5.75 = 17.25. This is the start of the running total. 5) Choose another student to buy the second product. Again, have him or her estimate before calculating. Then allow all the students to calculate the cost of the second product. For example 4 x 3.19 = 12.76. 6) Now students have to switch from multiplying to adding decimals. They add the price of the second product to their running total. 17.25 + 12.76 = 30.01 7) Continue with the third, fourth, and fifth (if necessary) product. 8) Students try to spend between $50-52. It’s not always easy! Talk to the class about different strategies such as saving an inexpensive product for the end. Grades to Use With: This is a fun math game for grades 4-7 when you are studying money, grocery shopping, and decimal operations. Even kids in middle school will have fun playing along! What's Included: 5-Page PowerPoint Presentation with 3 Rounds and Teacher Instructions If you enjoy this math game, check out my other rounds: Original Grocery Game Spring Grocery Game Winter Grocery Game

Sunflowers – Factual Interview Text, Glossary & Student Profile

Sunflowers – Factual Interview Text, Glossary & Student Profile A differentiated reading activity on Helianthus annuus for grades 3–7 🌻📚 This resource offers a creative and low-prep way to introduce your students to one of the best-known summer flowers: the sunflower (Helianthus annuus). Using an age-appropriate factual text in the form of an interview, this lesson invites students to learn more about the plant’s features, growth, and significance – all while practicing reading comprehension and working independently. The main text is written as an interview with a sunflower, which makes the content more relatable and engaging for younger learners. It’s differentiated into two versions (standard and simplified) to support mixed-ability groups. A glossary is included for both versions to support vocabulary development and help students access the content on their own. What’s included: Factual text in interview form (2 levels of difficulty) Glossary for each version of the text Printable student profile to be completed after reading Photo of a sunflower (self-taken, for classroom use) Answer key for the profile Optional extension task for early finishers All materials in both full-color and black-and-white versions Format: PDF Classroom ideas: Start the lesson with the sunflower photo as a silent impulse or discussion starter. Use guiding questions like: “Do you know this flower?” or “What can you tell about it?” From there, you can assign the text to pairs or small groups – or have it performed by two students, one acting as the sunflower, the other as the reporter. It’s a simple way to add some movement and creativity to factual reading. The profile helps students consolidate what they’ve read, and the glossary encourages independent clarification of unknown words. For quick finishers, there's a short research task on the healing properties of sunflowers, offering a meaningful extension. This material works well as part of a science or language arts lesson and is also easy to use in a substitute lesson. No extra prep required – just print and start. 📍 Best wishes, Heike from @Lernfitness Did You Know? Guided Reading Level O - World Harvest Foods (with Lesson Plan)
ELA, Resources for Teachers, Reading Comprehension, Reading, Language Development, Holidays, Holiday & Seasonal, Thanksgiving, Social Studies, Geography, Grade 2, 3, 4, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Literacy Readers, Quizzes, Quizzes and Tests, Assessments
This Guided Reading Book - World Harvest Foods (Level O) with lesson plan includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. Differentiation tips: Emerging speakers/struggling readers: oral + pointing On-level: oral in a full sentence Higher: one written sentence or draw + label Book Snapshot Title: Harvest Foods Around the World Genre: Nonfiction (informational) Subject: Social Studies (Culture) / Reading Primary Topic: Harvest festivals and foods in different cultures Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): O What This Book Teaches Best What “harvest” means and why it matters: Harvest is when crops are gathered, marking the end of the growing period. Culture and celebration through food: Different cultures celebrate fresh food with festivals, music, and special meals. Global examples of harvest traditions: The text highlights foods and celebrations from multiple places (South Korea, East Asia, Southern India, North America, Germany, Jewish communities, Nigeria/West Africa, Italy). Symbolism in foods: Some foods represent ideas (a mooncake’s center represents the moon; an overflowing Pongal pot symbolizes abundance). Connecting people to nature and community: Harvest foods connect people to the earth and to each other, and help share nature’s bounty in the community. Learning Goals Students will explain what harvest time is using details from the text. Students will identify several harvest celebrations in the book and name a food connected to each one. Students will describe how at least two harvest foods are made or served, using the text’s descriptions. Students will explain what the text says certain foods symbolize (such as abundance or the moon). Students will compare how harvest celebrations are similar and different across regions described in the book. Students will explain how harvest foods connect people, according to the last paragraph. Key Vocabulary From the Text bounty — a large amount of good food or crops. crescent-shaped — shaped like a curved, thin moon. signature — the most special or well-known thing for something. abundance — more than enough; a lot of something. gratitude — feeling thankful. Discussion Prompts Pre-reading question: What foods do you think people might eat to celebrate the harvest in different places? Comprehension questions: What does the book say harvest time is? What does the overflowing pot of Pongal symbolize? In the last paragraph, what do harvest foods connect people to? Printing Tips 1. Best Printing Method (Recommended) “Booklet” Printing (Best if Available) If your printer or PDF viewer supports Booklet Printing , use this. Settings to use: Print mode: Booklet Paper size: Letter or A4 (either works) Orientation: Landscape Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Scaling: Fit to printable area Booklet subset: First test: Front sides only Then: Back sides only This will automatically: Pair pages correctly Put the cover on the outside Align everything for folding After printing, fold in half and staple along the spine . 2. If “Booklet” Printing Is NOT Available You can still print this correctly with manual duplex printing . Step-by-step: Open the PDF. Choose Print . Set: Orientation: Landscape Pages per sheet: 1 Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Print all pages . Because each PDF page already contains two facing book pages, the result will still fold cleanly into a book. Thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. This fun and creative activity combines writing and drawing to bring their ultimate holiday feast to life, no actual cooking required, which is a relief for everyone involved. The writing portion invites kids to dream big. Will their Thanksgiving table include a mountain of mashed potatoes, a turkey the size of a small car, and an endless chocolate fountain? Or maybe pizza, donuts, and a side of fries? (No judgment here, dream big or go home!) As they describe their dream meal, they’ll also sneak in a little vocabulary and descriptive writing practice. Once the feast is planned on paper, it’s time to bring it to life with their artistic skills. Crayons, markers, or even glitter (if you're feeling brave) can turn their dream meal into a colorful masterpiece. Expect turkeys with sunglasses, pies with sprinkles, and enough gravy to fill a swimming pool. Perfect for classrooms, homeschooling, or post-pie downtime, this activity guarantees giggles, creativity, and maybe some outrageous menu ideas you’ll secretly want to try. It’s the most fun you can have with a pen and a plate! Enjoy!

Get ready to gobble up some creativity with the Thanksgiving Traditions Writing Prompt! This fun and festive activity gets kids thinking about what makes their Thanksgiving celebrations uniquely theirs, whether it’s a feast fit for royalty or a day spent dodging burnt stuffing disasters. Writing and drawing take center stage in this perfect blend of reflection and hilarity. First, students will dive into their family’s traditions. Do they watch football with a side of pie? Go on a turkey trot that’s more “stroll” than “run”? Or perhaps their family’s tradition involves grandma’s famous sweet potato casserole (with a marshmallow topping so high it needs its own zip code). Kids will craft their best descriptive writing, sharing the quirks, laughs, and delicious details of their Thanksgiving Day. Next comes the artistic twist! Students will illustrate their favorite tradition. Whether it’s a turkey-shaped centerpiece, a chaotic kitchen scene, or Uncle Bob snoozing in front of the TV with pumpkin pie crumbs, these drawings bring their stories to life. This activity isn’t just about celebrating Thanksgiving traditions, it’s about discovering what makes the holiday truly special: food, family, and enough laughs to stuff your heart as full as your plate! Enjoy!

Unleash your inner superhero this Thanksgiving with the My Thanksgiving Superpower Writing Prompt! This fun and festive activity invites kids to imagine what kind of superpower they’d wield during Thanksgiving, because let’s face it, we all need a little extra help when it comes to surviving the holiday season. First, students will write about their Thanksgiving superpower. Would they have the ability to instantly teleport to the front of the food line (no shame in that)? Or perhaps the superpower to make endless mashed potatoes appear with just a snap of their fingers? Maybe they’d have the power to make every family member’s laugh contagious (or the uncanny ability to avoid doing the dishes). The possibilities are as limitless as second helpings of pie! Once the writing is done, the creative fun continues with a drawing. Kids will illustrate themselves in full superhero gear, cape, mask, and maybe even a gravy boat in hand. It’s the perfect opportunity to show off their artistic talents, whether their superpower involves saving the day or just saving some room for dessert. This activity combines imagination, writing, and humor, all wrapped up in a Thanksgiving turkey-shaped cape! It’s the perfect way to give thanks for the fun (and funny) things that make the holiday extra special. Enjoy!

Thanksgiving : A Short History
Holiday & Seasonal, Social Studies, Holidays, Thanksgiving, History, History: USA, Not Grade Specific, Activities
Teach your students about the history and traditions of the Thanksgiving holiday. Reading sheets cover the following topics: EARLY HISTORY Students learn about ancient harvest/autumn festivals celebrated around the world. THE PILGRIMS Covers other examples of thanksgiving services in colonial Virginia and also tells the story of the early Thanksgiving celebrations in New England. Here's a short text example: "The most famous early thanksgiving took place at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1621. A group of settlers, known as the Pilgrims, had arrived on the coast just as winter was beginning. Without enough food, around 50% died over the next few months. The local Massasoit Native Americans helped the Pilgrims by giving them food and showing them how to use fish as a food for growing corn. After the harvest there was a feast at which around 50 Pilgrims and 90 Massasoit ate corn, ducks, geese, swans, venison, fish, and oysters as well as fruits and vegetables. The Pilgrims held another thanksgiving feast in 1623 after weeks of rain had ended a long drought which was killing many of their crops. Over the next 150 years many other people in New England began holding their own thanksgiving celebrations but at different times of the year. These celebrations were especially important because, in many parts of New England, Christmas celebrations were banned." THE 1700s & 1800s Informs students about how and why the celebration of Thanksgiving expanded in both centuries, especially the period of the Civil War THE 20th CENTURY Students learn about the impacts of World War One and World War Two on the celebration of Thanksgiving as well as how improvements in road and air travel made family celebrations easier. ACTIVITIES Students can use the information they learn to create an illustrated timeline showing the history of Thanksgiving. The timeline sheets come in a blank and illustrated version depending on your students' needs. There are also materials to create a poster version of the project as well. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES The file also contains a fun crossword activity and coloring pages. There is also a PowerPoint to help guide teachers and students through each part of the unit.
