Thanksgiving Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Fun songs, and silly Thanksgiving Day jokes, will add extra fun and excitement to this special holiday. Kids will also be encouraged to “pay their blessings forward” by talking with their parents about making new traditions like volunteering at a soup kitchen or inviting someone less fortunate over for dinner.

Attitude of Gratitude (Things I'm Thankful For)

Attitude of Gratitude (Things I'm Thankful For)
Holiday & Seasonal, Holidays, Thanksgiving, Grade 4, 5, Activities

Attitude of Gratitude: Things I’m Thankful For , is a character building activity to use when you've run out of steam. So you’re ready for Thanksgiving recess, and the only thing your kids talk about is what they’re gonna eat for the holiday. Unfortunately, they tend to forget that Thanksgiving is so much more than turkey, food and fun. This Attitude of Gratitude resource will help them realize the true meaning of the season, and appreciate their blessings. Without a doubt, your class will think about the things they're thankful for when writing them on colorful cards. As educators , we know that when we do something kind or charitable for another person, it is not only beneficial to them, but it allows us to feel some warm fuzzies too. This good feeling is something we hope to instill in our students, especially during the holiday season. ※ Experts say: ※ ※ A thankful person spends less time comparing himself/ herself to others which leads to less jealousy. ※It helps children realize that others can do something nice for them even though they don’t have to. ※It gives children the ability to understand other people’s feelings and to have a sense of belonging in the classroom community. ✎ This is what you’ll get:✎ ✎ Complete lesson plan ✎ Colorful set of lined and unlined cards ✎ Black/White lined and unlined cards ✎ Images for your Thanksgiving Box ✎ Now for a bit of my story: ✎ When I did this activity with my 6th graders, they loved it because it gave them a chance to look within and realize how lucky they were. I was amazed at some of the things they wrote. Andres was thankful for his grandpa who helped him deal with his parent’s divorce. Kayla felt that she couldn’t do anything right and was thankful to me for helping her realize that she had many abilities, among them was drawing, she was truly an excellent artist. Jeremiah was so thankful that his favorite uncle was a cancer survivor. You never know what’s going on in a child’s life. Of course, this caused me to shed a few tears. Needless to say, we all went home that Wednesday looking at Thanksgiving a little differently. ✿ This resource can be used for: ✿ ✔ Middle School ✔ Upper Elementary ✔ Special Ed Classrooms ※ Lessons to engage, challenge, excite and be remembered long after they’ve left your classroom. ※ Copyright©2016 Deann Marin (Socrates Lantern) All rights reserved by author. Here is a brand new edition of my popular grocery game. There are three rounds (Back to School, Halloween, and Thanksgiving) with five food items each! This game allows students to practice estimating, adding, and multiplying with decimal numbers in a fun and engaging way! It is a fun, whole class activity that you need to be able to project in your classroom on an interactive whiteboard or screen-share for distance learning. As students play along, they practice estimating to stay within a shopping budget. They have to multiply and add with decimal numbers: all helpful realistic applications. Since this is a PowerPoint Presentation, you are able to move the boxes covering the price of each item after students make their guess: just like a real game show! Grades to Use With: This is a fun game for grades 3-6 when you are studying money, grocery shopping, and decimal operations. Even kids in middle school will have fun playing along! Standards: CCSS5.NBT.B.7 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. CCSS6.NS.B.3 Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation. CCSS4.NF.C.7 Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two decimals refer to the same whole. Thanksgiving Math Project

Thanksgiving Math Project
Holiday & Seasonal, Holidays, Thanksgiving, Math, Money, Grade 3, 4, Activities, Projects

Students will plan the perfect Thanksgiving dinner with this Thanksgiving Math Project. This lesson contains two files. This .pdf consists of two versions of the math task: The first is for 3rd graders that are at grade level (or 4th graders that are slightly below). The second is for 4th graders that are at grade level (or 3rd graders that are slightly above). When I do this lesson, I use both versions. My higher 3rd graders take the more difficult version and go work in a small group. My at-grade level students work on the easier version, and we start it whole class, and then they break off into groups, as well. The second file is a PowerPoint of the student instructions and the store items. I added this one in order to make the prices editable, so that you may make them as easy or as difficult as desired. You can also change the amount of money that students start with if you use the PowerPoint. The “At the Store” shopping menu can be printed in color or black and white. I also assign different numbers of guests to each group, in order to keep students working within their groups, and to avoid the groups collaborating with one another. This way, each group has a unique task that they can present at the end of the project. This project should take 2-3 days, depending on the level of your students and whether or not you have the groups share how they each completed their task. This is perfect the week before Thanksgiving break or any time during the month of November. You get to incorporate math and a holiday celebration all at once. Also, I love to have the groups illustrate and label their finished feasts on poster board for their presentations!

Thanksgiving : A Short History

Thanksgiving : A Short History
Holiday & Seasonal, Social Studies, Holidays, Thanksgiving, History, History: USA, Not Grade Specific, Activities

Teach your students about the history and traditions of the Thanksgiving holiday. Reading sheets cover the following topics: EARLY HISTORY Students learn about ancient harvest/autumn festivals celebrated around the world. THE PILGRIMS Covers other examples of thanksgiving services in colonial Virginia and also tells the story of the early Thanksgiving celebrations in New England. Here's a short text example: "The most famous early thanksgiving took place at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1621. A group of settlers, known as the Pilgrims, had arrived on the coast just as winter was beginning. Without enough food, around 50% died over the next few months. The local Massasoit Native Americans helped the Pilgrims by giving them food and showing them how to use fish as a food for growing corn. After the harvest there was a feast at which around 50 Pilgrims and 90 Massasoit ate corn, ducks, geese, swans, venison, fish, and oysters as well as fruits and vegetables. The Pilgrims held another thanksgiving feast in 1623 after weeks of rain had ended a long drought which was killing many of their crops. Over the next 150 years many other people in New England began holding their own thanksgiving celebrations but at different times of the year. These celebrations were especially important because, in many parts of New England, Christmas celebrations were banned." THE 1700s & 1800s Informs students about how and why the celebration of Thanksgiving expanded in both centuries, especially the period of the Civil War THE 20th CENTURY Students learn about the impacts of World War One and World War Two on the celebration of Thanksgiving as well as how improvements in road and air travel made family celebrations easier. ACTIVITIES Students can use the information they learn to create an illustrated timeline showing the history of Thanksgiving. The timeline sheets come in a blank and illustrated version depending on your students' needs. There are also materials to create a poster version of the project as well. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES The file also contains a fun crossword activity and coloring pages. There is also a PowerPoint to help guide teachers and students through each part of the unit.
