Earth Day Math Activity for Grades 5-7: Plastic Water Bottle Math Here’s a ready-to-go math inquiry activity and conversation starter for students in grades 5-7 for Earth Day. Students use their knowledge of: Large numbers (to the billions): They calculate how many litres of water are used in 1.3 billion plastic water bottles each day. Rounding: They round the population on Earth the nearest billion. Multiplication and division with large numbers: They divide the number of litres of water from all the plastic water bottles on Earth each day by the number of litres one classroom can hold. Unit conversions (mL to litres and m3 to litres): They calculate how many litres of water their classroom can hold using metres cubed. Calculating the volume of a rectangular prism: They calculate the volume of their classroom using length x width x height. They will determine how many classrooms could be filled with the plastic water bottles used on Earth each day. Spoiler Alert: It’s a shockingly large number! Then they will think of why some people need to use plastic water bottles, if they actually do, and ways to help reduce the number of plastic water bottles used each day on Earth. Recycling Project + Writing Workshop

As springtime approaches and the school year approaches its end, we begin talking about a few important topics and celebrations with our students. From the start of the school year, our students have been able to watch nature change from season to season. Spring brings an exciting new change of pace for us all. It is a season where we celebrate Earth Day and talk about how we can take care of our planet. This is a Recycling Project Writing Workshop that will focus on teaching students about the 3 R’s: reduce, reuse, and recycle. This is great for 2nd - 5th grade students. There are 2 downloads included in this project : -Parent letter -Writing packet The project will consist of students finding something at home to recycle that they would generally throw in the trash (e.g., water bottle, milk jug, magazines, plastic utensils, etc.). they will take that object and turn it into something wonderful and useful. For instance, they might take a milk jug and turn it into a flowerpot or use the pictures from a magazine to make an incredible piece of art for their wall. Then students will complete a writing project about the object they have created. The parent letter is completely editable. I hope you enjoy!
