Going into Foster Care Social Story
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Special Education Needs (SEN), Not Grade Specific,
Social storyto explain a little about the situation to a child who is going into foster care. A child going into foster care can be supported by letting them know you are there for them and that they are not alone. The point of a social story is to use a patient and reassuring tone to teach children about social situations in a way that can be easily understood. Social stories can be useful for any child who is struggling to understand a situation or concept or needs help to understand a social skill or social cue, expectations, perspectives, common responses or is troubled about an upcoming event but social stories are particularly useful for children on the autistic spectrum for whom social cues can be challenging and who often suffer anxiety if they do not know what to expect from a situation. These books should be used over and over to reinforce the point so I would suggest either putting the pages into a display book or laminating and binding them. Included is a 20 page PDF printable social story. There are 3 versions - one for a child who has been taken from both parents and then for a child who has been taken from their mom or dad. Kindness Calendar
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Social Skills, Not Grade Specific, Classroom Decor
Practicing kindness, both giving and receiving it, is an important skill for children to learn. This printable kindness calendar provides a meaningful activity for each day of the month to reinforce kindness in simple, engaging ways. The calendar suggests daily kindness missions like thanking an adult for what they do to help you, reading a book with a friend, paying someone a compliment or helping to pick up litter. The activities can be done at home, school, or out in public community spaces. Each day children can mark off the completed action, giving children a sense of accomplishment. Teachers could even add a small reward system for checking off rows throughout the month. The mix of challenges - both interpersonal acts of kindness towards others and intrapersonal acts cultivating self-compassion - develops empathy, gratitude, self-control, and perspective-taking. Young children learn that kindness experiences should be part of everyday life, not just special occasions. Older students grow reflection skills by discussing their participation afterwards. Adaptations like writing personalized actions or theming months around different areas makes the calendar flexible year-round. Simple in execution yet profound in impact, this calendar seeds kindness that will continue flowering in children's hearts. Resource includes 1 PDF printable page
