Book Browse: Teach Your Students How to Choose a Book to Read

The purpose of this 6-page lesson, Book Browse: Teach Your Students How to Choose a Book to Read is to teach students in grades 4 through 9 how to browse for a book to read. Many of our students are not sure how to choose a book to read. They might not have many books in their homes or they might not go to a library or bookstore. We have to teach our students how to browse a book to see if they might want to read it. I take my students to our school media center /library once every five or six weeks, and we always book browse. Sometimes we browse a specific genre, such as Historical Fiction or Narrative Nonfiction. Other times it might be Newbury Awards or bestsellers. Students enjoy this activity, and over time, they feel very comfortable browsing for books on their own.Every time we go to the library after this first time, students ask if we can do a book browse. Some teachers might think it’s a waste of a period, but I am an avid book browser at the library and in bookstores, and I have found many authors that I wouldn’t have if I hadn’t browsed. The structure that this lesson provides is very useful if you’re doing a genre study or a literature circle. But even if you just want your students to have a book of no particular genre, giving them choices within a somewhat limited framework (rather than having them wander among the shelves looking or pretending to look), helps them make informed choices and gives them some agency at the same time. This activity offers students the opportunity to find books they might enjoy. Although this lesson is specifically designed for a school library, if you have an extensive classroom library, you can easily book browse in your classroom. As you introduce and review new topics with your art students, you may want to ensure that you have quality resources that will allow them to express their understanding of the concept. Art can be concrete and abstract simultaneously! Because of this, we want to assess mastery in the best ways we know how. We can do this when we present hands-on and engaging lessons and instruction to our students. Harmony and Unit is an editable presentation that can be accessed through Microsoft or Google. It consists of 23 slides. The objective is for students to be able to demonstrate their understanding of harmony and unity by creating an artwork inspired by Andy Goldsworthy. The presentation breakdown is as follows: Slides 2 & 3 – Definition, description, and visual examples of harmony. Slides 4 & 5 – Definition, description, and visual examples of unity. Slide 6 – Short paragraph about Andy Goldsworthy. Slides 7 – 20 – Visuals of Goldsworthy’s artwork (one image per slide). Children love to use their scissors, rubber bands, and paper! 2.OBJECTIVES: -Help your students learn the numbers from 1 to 100. -Motivate your students to learn mathematics in a fun way. 3. ORDER, SCHEME AND STAGES: - Ask your students questions about the numbers from 1 to 100, using the following questions: What numbers do you know from 1 to 100? What is this number called? -Then you can present some forms to review numbers. -Finally you can apply the proposed activity here. 4. GRADES OR AGES: This game is aimed at children from 5 to 7 years old. That is, it can be used from Kindergarten to grade 2. 5.APPLICATION FORMAT: It is suggested that you first motivate the students, you can use a number song from 1 to 100. Then present the present activity. 6. ANSWER KEYS: This material does not require the use of extra answers. 7.
