Two lessons focused on American Colonial History are included in the resource, provide Social Studies Skill Building Opportunities for your middle school students. The Founding of the 13 British Colonies- Vocabulary Development and Reading and Analyzing a Table. The first, Vocabulary Building: familiarizes students with key terms so they can develop greater understanding of the founding of the 13 colonies.The second, The Founding of the Colonies Chart: Reading and Analyzing a Table: provides students with the opportunity to learn and practice various reading strategies, such as drawing conclusions, making inferences and comparisons, and identifying similarities and differences. The questions students will answer guide them through the reading of the table. The first lesson, Vocabulary Development, provides students with two vocabulary development strategies. First, students identify which of the following 8 words they know (and how well, if at all, they know them) using the Road Signs to Understanding Words handout which front loads the 8 key terms: Theocracy, Proprietary, Democratic, Joint-stock Company, Elected Assembly, Profit, Debtors, and Buffer. From their, they explore each of the 8 words using the K.I.M. Vocabulary Strategy: Knowledge (information about the word, its part of speech, and its variations in parts of speech); Information ((Definition(s) of the word), and Memory Clue Draw a picture or symbol to represent the meaning). They then write an original sentence showing they understand the word. In the second lesson, The Founding of the Colonies Chart: Reading and Analyzing a Table, students will read and analyze a table with information about the founding of each of the 13 colonies: Colonial Region, Colony/Date Founded, Leader(s), Reasons Founded, Type of Government. Students often need help in navigating information-heavy charts, especially if there are words and concepts they are struggling with. This lesson guides students through how to read and analyzing these key details. The chart is accompanied by 11 analytical questions with the final two questions asking students to reflect on what was most and least challenging about this assignment and why. Finally, there is a vocabulary assessment with 5 short answer critical thinking questions, in which students are asked show their understanding of the key terms by comparing, contrasting, and explaining the words. The detailed, standards-aligned lessons provide interactive and collaborative ways to approach these activities and includes An About this Resource Chart that easily references all the materials in the resource, including the standards, objectives, learning targets, an Essential Question, 2 Guiding Questions, among other things. The two lessons should take between 2-3 days depending on how you approach the K.I.M. Vocabulary.

This is a great Themed Art by the Month Packet. Unfortunately, many of us do not have the time to incorporate art into our school days or even weeks. Sometime each month, get this book out and let your students show off their individual creativity. As you will see, some months require more imagination than others! The months and their art templates are as follows: January – snowman February – heart March – pot of gold April – rainy showers May – bouquet of flowers June – on the beach July – storm clouds August – school supplies September – bare tree October – pumpkin November – turkey December – tree For each month, students can: -Decorate that template with their individual art supplies, such as markers and crayons. -Decorate the template with art supplies such as string, tissue paper, buttons, felt, etc. -Add additional features to the template. Can they enhance their picture by drawing more characters or more backgrounds? Extension activities can be added to any of these art templates. Examples of some extension activities include: -Have students write a short story BEFORE showing them what the template for the day will look like. After they have written their story, challenge them to make their picture represent their short story. -Have students write a short story AFTER they have finished decorating their art template. -Have students work with a partner to decide how they could decorate their picture together.

Mixed Questions The mixed questions section of each lesson includes a variation of five to six comprehension, vocabulary and Math questions. In addition, key reading strategies are frequently covered including cause & effect, summarizing, compare & contrast and making conclusions. Mixed questions require a written response (no MCQ's), full answers and example responses appear at the end of the lesson. Spelling & Vocab Each reading passage contains a variety of words and phrases designed for Grade 6/7 students. Spelling and vocab activities provide the opportunity to build fluency with these words. Activities provide clues to help assist students. Vocabulary activities include extra questions where students must write a synonym, an antonym or a sentence using a certain word. Writing Prompts Writing prompts are designed to continue the theme or lessons learned in the story. Students are persuaded to write in a variety of ways and each prompt includes several cues to help. The main focus in this product, is the student. Prompts will require the student to relate to past experiences and encourage them to discuss feelings and ways to improve. President’s Day

President’s Day is a Level C reader written for students in primary grades. There is a picture of Mount Rushmore on the first page of the text which is a great lead into the story since Washington and Lincoln are carved in the statue and the leveled reader features these two presidents. The concepts taught in the story and a list of vocabulary words are listed at the top of the text to guide instruction. The text is a simple one-page story that talks about two famous U.S. presidents: George Washington, the 1st president, and Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president. In easy-to-understand language, the story gives background information of the importance of these two men and brings meaning to President’s Day, a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February to honor the past presidents and the current president serving the people of the U.S. This leveled reader can be used to introduce the special day and provide background information to your students.
