Matching Objects to Shapes Activity

Matching Objects to Shapes Activity
Math, Geometry, Grade 1, 2, Activities

We have so many new skills to teach our young learners, so ensuring that we can keep them engaged very early on is so important. Two ways to do this is by incorporating topics they are interested in and by providing them with hands-on activities. This is a Matching Objects to Shapes Activity that is great for your 1st and 2nd grade students. You can use this to introduce shapes or review it for students who have already mastered shape identification. It is a 5-page printable. You may choose to print copies of each page for every student to complete as a cut and paste activity . It may also be good to print a few copies and laminate them for repeated use. If you choose to laminate them, you can attach Velcro dots to the cut-outs so students can match them up. On the first three pages, you have 3 shapes per each page. On the last 2 pages, there will be real-life objects for students to cut out and match to the shapes. I hope you enjoy! Successful Homework Habits for Students - SEL Lesson - Homework

Successful Homework Habits for Students - SEL Lesson - Homework
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, Lesson Plans, Teacher Tools

Do your students struggle with completing their homework? Being able to independently complete homework is a SKILL that needs to be explicitly taught to students - this product does just that! Use this social story to teach students important strategies complete homework independently and with success! About Social Story - Getting Homework Done This Social Story is an interactive book/printable designed to offer students strategies to complete their homework independently with success! Children become the main character of the story as they answer questions, color, draw pictures as they discuss strategies for completing homework independently! This resource is a great behavior support tool to teach at the beginning of the year. This is a great resource to send home with your students to encourage discussions with their parents about good homework habits! WHAT IS INCLUDED: Social Story Explanation Social Story Full Book Print-out Social Story Half-Page Print-out Discussion Guide Google Slides Ages: This book is best suited for ages 7-12. Could also be adapted for ages below and above this range! How I Use this Resource in My Classroom- I like to spend A LOT of time in the beginning of the school year teaching social stories focused positive behavior expectations. I have found that I often assume students have the skills they need to "do school", but am often humbled with the amount of explicit instruction students need surrounding skills like completing their homework. Timing- I usually schedule this social story around the end of the first month of school. I like to make sure I have sent the activity home before back-to-school night so that I can mention it with parents during my presentation. This way, families that did not have the homework discussion at home have the chance to do so... it is so important! Then, I usually re-teach the lesson halfway through the school year when students need a reminder of the important skills! How I teach it - I always teach this social story as a whole class lesson instead of in small groups. The skills included in this social story are really valuable to all students. Included in the product is a discussion guide that will walk you through exactly how to present the information to your students. I always print out the half-page version for each student. I display the teacher slides on my Active Board and the students fill out their book as I fill out the one on the board. Sending the Book Home - One of the cool aspects about this social story is that there are parts for the students to bring home and complete with their families. This fosters really great discussions around good homework habits and parents love having this as a resource. Behavior Remediation Tool - This is one of those social stories that keeps coming back many times throughout the school year. Once a student becomes a repeat offender of not completing their homework, the first thing I do is come back to this resource! I have the student review their social story and see if there are any skills they can sharpen to help them become successful at completing their homework on their own again. It opens up a great place for honest conversation and helps you determine what barriers the student is facing keeping them from being successful at this essential component of being a student. I hope you enjoy this resource! For more like it, please visit my store at Mrs Bonie Just Teach.

Shapes Assessment

Shapes Assessment
Math, Geometry, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, Teacher Tools, Assessments

An important part of instruction are the assessments that follow! This is especially important for our younger elementary students. They are entering school with many different skill sets. It is beneficial for us to find out what they know, so we can properly serve them moving forward. This is why formative assessments are so important. We administer formative assessments at the start of the year, the middle of the school year, and at the end of the school year. This is a 2-page Shapes Assessment that can be printed or accessed digitally. This is a quick formative assessment for primaries to keep track of whether or not they can, not only identify each shape, but describe them as well. It includes a page for flat shapes and another for solids. There are 6 flat shapes and 4 solid shapes. You can print a copy of the pages for each student that you have to assess. Allow students to look at a shape one at a time and name the shape. If they name it correctly, you can check off the box. Then allow students to describe the shape. This will include how many sides and angles or if the shape is round. If they can describe it, you can check that box off. This is a great resource to guide your instruction as well as place in their data folders for future reference. I hope you enjoy! Winter Olympic Games Writing Challenge | Resilience & Mindset!

Winter Olympic Games Writing Challenge | Resilience & Mindset!
ELA, P.E. & Health, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Games, Activities

Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. The Winter Olympic Games provide an amazing perspective on the effects of hard work and dedication. Learners will think through their definitions of victory and success, while contemplating mindset and resilience in the face of challenges. In addition to these key SEL areas, learners encounter the fun task of choosing their sport and the location of the Olympics they are competing at, bringing in an element of geography. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing. STANDARDS: Meets CCSS Writing standards for grades 2-5. Don't forget to check out the Chef's Toolbox, Superhero's Toolbox, and Astronaut's Toolbox activities for more fun! These activities can be used with a whole class in addition to the writing challenge printable. This printable is optimal for 2nd-5th graders who enjoy learning about sports and demonstrating their knowledge of them. By using the included matrix to choose the setting, challenge, and characters in their story, they'll use the freedom afforded them to create something they love. BONUS: Take advantage of the 4 extension activity ideas included in this printable. These activities will take their writing beyond the page and bring it to life in STEAM-supported outlets. What you'll get: a 4 page PDF including instructions, extension activity ideas, and 3 student pages. One of these pages is simply writing space for you to print off as many copies as you need based on the amount your students are writing. You'll also find the editing checklist to prompt students to edit their own work for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.
