CVC Words, Read, Match and Spell

Read, Match and Spell is an activity I made for one of my pupils to give fun practice of reading and sounding out CVC words. All the pupil has to do is choose a word, find the matching picture and then spell out the word using magnetic letters (not provided!) This activity is great for the less confident child as s/he is not presented with a blank piece of paper which can be rather daunting. All that is required is that child choose a word, and sound it out. Once the word has been read, the matching picture can be found. For maximum benefit. Do have the child sound out the word, rather than just copying the word as s/he 'writes it using the magnetic letters. Who is this activity for? For any child that is learning to sound out CVC words with a short vowel sound. Early years children will be very suited to the activity. How can it be used? It can be used with individual children, groups or in a literacy centre. You can even use the baseboard as a worksheet and let the child write the sound in the spaces. The teacher can choose which sounds are given to the child to work with, either a, e, i, o, or u. The teacher can choose to give the child practice in just one sound, or the sounds can be intermingled according to the needs of the child. What is included in the download? A baseboard which can be printed as many times as required. Five sheets of letters and pictures, 6 for each vowel. My pupil enjoyed playing this activity and I hope it helps others too! Longtime fans have been asking us to make this long vowel resource for a while, and we have finally decided to take the plunge. It turned out to be a pretty awesome resource. First off, use the PDF based digital file to introduce these long vowel sounds to your students. You just open the file and show it full screen. Then use the arrow keys to go from one page to another. This way you can also stop the slideshow if something is too difficult for your students. After this, you can give them the digital multiple choice test. The correct answer will be circled in green and the incorrect ones are red. This makes it abundantly clear what the right answer is. But there are a bunch of printable files as well. How about the vocab lists en tests? And then there are the flash cards too, either with round or with sharp corners. All and all, a very complete resource to practice long vowel sounds.

Final Blend ND: Read and Colour

This fun, Read and Color worksheet for final Consonant blend ND words is an excellent means of encouraging children to become familiar with new blends. What is included in the pack? One PDF sheet for the Consonant blend ending ND. What do the worksheets involve? An adult should instruct pupils as to how to colour-code the endings: and/end/ind/ond, by the code given. An adult will need to help with this as the children are not expected to be able to read the colour names. The child should then read the words to an adult (you will want to ensure they get it correct the first time and not make mistakes). The child colours the picture, reading the words and checking against the code to see which colour to each shape. Children can easily work on the sheet unaided once they have been instructed and the words colour-coded, although, with children with special needs, it is strongly suggested that an adult works with the child for maximum benefit. How to use As each new blend is introduced the teacher has several aims: The child should be thoroughly familiar with the new blend - to recognise it wherever it is seen; To be able to track the new blend in words; To be able to decode words containing the new consonant blend easily To distinguish a blend from other similar blends, both visually and aurally. ND is often confused with NT. This fun read and colour activity provides help for all four! Pupils will need as much practice as they can to achieve the four things listed above and for some children, this can be tedious; the teacher must think of creative ways to give as much repetition as needed and to keep the child engaged. This fun Read and Colour sheet is ideal as a new way to engage the child: the child will be reading and re-reading and in doing so may even become familiar with the words, which will aid reading fluency. Who is the final ND blend Read and Colour worksheet for? Young learners Those with a special need Due to its non-babyish nature , it can be successfully used with older ESL/EFL pupils. Answer keys: An answer key is not necessary for this activity.

Binary Mystery Pictures This is an extension activity used after the students have had several lessons on place value for base 2. They should have also had practice converting base 10 numbers using 0 and 1 to write numbers in base 2 (binary). The picture activity takes conversion one step further, having the student filling in each box as a 0 or 1, with a 1 represented by a shaded box. Converting the given numbers from base 10 to base 2 will reveal a pixelated image, as a computer would draw it on the screen. The grid is divided into 2 main sections (A and B), each with 8 smaller columns across. Notice the two columns of numbers along the grid to the left. The column of numbers on the left correspond to section A and the numbers on the right correspond to section B. Directions: 1. For each row, convert each base 10 number to base 2. Show your answer by shading in the appropriate boxes in the corresponding column. A shaded box represents that place value as a “1.” Example: In the grid below, the first row lists 0 and 0, so therefore, no boxes are shaded. In the second row in section A, 0 is listed so again no boxes in that section's row are shaded. In the second row, section B, 15 is shown. To represent 15 as an 8-digit binary number, you would shade the first four boxes from the right to represent “00001111” in the place values filled. 2. Continue converting numbers for each row until the picture is revealed.
