Straw Tower STEM Challenge for Middle School Students. My Straw Tower Challenge is an excellent way to get your students' excited for STEM in an engaging hands-on way. In this activity, students will work in groups to design and build a freestanding tower using only straws, paper clips, and tape. Their goal is to build a tower that will be tall and yet stable enough to hold a small weight at the top. By doing this activity, your students will experience the process of creating something new as they brainstorm, plan, design, and test their ideas. This challenge allows students to apply what they're learning in science and math classes, including geometry, physics , material science and more as they problem-solve to create a strong, stable tower using only simple materials. I designed this activity to bring physics concepts to life through active learning as I've found this is the best way to engage your students and keep them interested. This pendulum experiment offers students an engaging opportunity to uncover the foundational principles of harmonic motion utilizing basic materials - string, weight, and stopwatch. Students will conduct their own investigations into the relationship between a pendulum's length and periodic time. By changing the pendulum length and measuring the effects, they will gain firsthand experience with core physics ideas like period, gravity, and oscillation. This lab is aligned to Next Generation Science Standards and facilitates key educational goals for middle and high school students. This is a great resource for a calm down corner in your classroom, in a counseling office, reset area, or to send home to parents who are working with their child on self-regulation.
