Here is a simple book to help with the teaching of initial sounds for the very young. It was written for Reading Made Simple, my 100% FREE phonic programme teaching reading and writing, but can bu used with any good phonic programme. Aims and objectives To help children to learn: The sounds that each letter of the alphabet stands for To hear this sound at the beginning of words (initial sounds/beginning sound) To be able to form the letters of the alphabet correctly and link them to the sound each one stands for. What is included: 1 PDF with one page for each letter of the alphabet. Steps and order: Introduce the child to the sound and look for things that begin with each sound. You can use our video to help you to do this. Teach the child to write the letter. Then use the workbook to practice. Each page contains one object from the previous sound. Can th child remember how to write the sound for this picture? Can the child hear that the initial sound is different to that being studied? Assessment The adult should always assess while the child is working and ask: Is the child remembering the sound each letter makes? Can the child hear the correct initial sound? Initial Sounds Reading Books Complete Set

This is a set of five first 'reading' books to help children to learn the initial sounds, or sounds that words begin with (beginning sounds). Each page has a letter of the alphabet for the child to finger trace, so practising letter formation. Each page has things that begin with that sound and at least one object that does not. Order, outline and steps: 1.Finger trace the letter. 2.Find as many objects as possible that begin with that sound. 3.Say the names of the objects and listen carefully to the first sound - the initial letter. E.g. ‘/b/’ for ball.It sometimes helps to repeat the sound initial sounds: bbbb-ball, or hold o on to it: aaapple. 4Praise your child and do not be discouraged if s/he does not succeed at first. Aim for the child to know the sound each letter makes while s/he learns to hear the initial sound of words. 5.After the lesson, encourage the child to listen for other words that begin with today’s sound. How can the Initial sounds books be used? You can use them in 2 ways. Either: 1. Have the child look at each letter as it is introduced and use the page as part of the lesson for that sound. 2. Wait until all of the sounds in each book have been taught and use it for revision. I prefer the latter way of using the Initial Sounds books, as when the child has learned 5 sounds, s/he will be so glad to recognise the sounds that have been taught in the book and it will give him/her a wonderful boost in confidence and a vital feeling of success. Try it for yourself and see! As you let each child read the book, make it a moment to mark progress. “Now you have learned some more letters, you can read this book!” Full instructions are given.
