Become A Sumerian Brick Builder
Social Studies, History, History: Ancient, Grade 6, Activities, Projects
If you're searching for a novel approach to teach your middle schoolers about ancient history, the Become a Sumerian Brick Builder will surely captivate them. This resource provides a hands-on STEM activity that is engaging, stimulating, and enjoyable. Explaining to my 6th grade students that the Sumerians were pioneers in brick building made little sense to them until they experienced it firsthand. They were tasked with creating their own mud bricks just as the ancient Sumerians did, and this tangible exercise enabled them to appreciate the intricate challenges these early brick builders faced. They delighted in bringing their homemade bricks to class and collaboratively constructing a Ziggurat. Their most favorite part, unsurprisingly, was the demolition of their creation. Rather than merely giving lectures, assigning textbook readings, and having students answer questions — which can be dull and off-putting — this activity stimulates active learning. The project incorporates a written assignment that students complete independently, which can be utilized for both History and English Language Arts grading. We are all aware that many students forget learned material shortly after they've been tested on it. This interactive project, however, is bound to leave a lasting impression, instilling knowledge they will carry with them long after they leave your class. Experts in the field underscore the benefits of project-based learning (PBL), stating that it is an effective and enjoyable way to acquire important skills needed for school and life success. While traditional education can often be viewed as dull and irrelevant, PBL engages students, making them active learners. Standards like Common Core stress the real-world application of knowledge and skills to enhance problem-solving capabilities. PBL not only deepens students' understanding of the content but also aids in longer retention compared to conventional teaching methods. Additionally, working in collaboration with others fosters character development. ⎈ I REMEMBER sitting in history class, as a student, and being bored out of my mind. The teacher just lectured and all I could do was look at the clock and wish that I was someplace else, ANYPLACE else! Needless to say I learned very little that year. I only began liking ancient history after Ibecamea 6th grade teacher, years later, and vowed that I would make it come alive for my children. I didn't want them to go through what I did. That negative experience gave me the impetus to use PBL learning in most of my teaching and I’m so glad I did. ⎈THIS RESOURCE can be used for⎈ ⎈ Gifted students ⎈ Middle school ⎈ World History classes/ELA classes ☼ Lighting the path to knowledge with enticing and exciting activities that they'll remember long after they've left your classroom ☼ ♥Other Teachers Purchased These Resources♥ Project Based History/Literacy What Is It Like To Be An Archaeologist?(6-10) Project Based History/Literacy...Hammurabi Code of Law Debate 6-8 Was King Tut Murdered? The Roman Empire Webquest
Social Studies, History, History: Ancient, Grade 6, 7, 8, Activities, Projects
Seeking an engaging method to teach your 6-8 graders about ancient history? The Roman Empire: Web Quest might be your solution. This resource is designed to immerse students in the grandeur of Rome. Far from the traditional lecture-based approach, this hands-on, Project-Based Learning (PBL) activity encourages collaborative group work, making the learning process enticing, challenging, and enjoyable. Instead of the standard reading and answering routine, which can often disengage students, The Roman Empire: Web Quest allows students to actively travel back to Ancient Rome. Here, they delve into investigations about life during that era. Collaborative groups select one of seven focus areas, conducting research, taking notes, and later sharing their findings with the class. A unique component involves students writing diary entries, imagining a day in the life of a Roman. This assignment not only adds depth to their understanding but can also double up as both a Social Studies and English grade for those teaching both subjects. The program is exhaustive, featuring a mini-history book, graphic organizers, pre-writing pages, and a grading rubric. It's a well-acknowledged fact that students often forget lessons post-examination. However, I am confident that this hands-on approach will leave an indelible mark, creating memories that linger even after they move on from your classroom. Experts in the field frequently advocate for project-based learning. They believe that PBL not only enhances learning competencies required for academic and life successes but also combats the prevailing sentiment among students that education can be monotonous. PBL ensures students are active and engaged learners. With current educational standards, like the Common Core, emphasizing real-world applications of knowledge, PBL stands out as an approach that fosters problem-solving. Furthermore, the collaborative nature of PBL activities aids character development, and it's observed that students tend to understand and retain content more effectively through PBL than traditional teaching methods. ⎈ THIS IS WHAT’S INCLUDED: ⎈ ⎈ Complete Lesson Plans ⎈ Mini Ancient Rome History Booklet with Questions, Answers and Web Links ⎈ Assignment Sheets for Students with or without Costumes/Disguises ⎈ Images with Roman Dress ⎈ Information on Grading ⎈ Grading Rubric for Web Quest ⎈ Grading Rubric for Diary Entry Can Also be Used for ELA Grade if Desired ⎈ Assignment for Diary Entry ⎈ Graphic Organizers ⎈ Pre-Writing Pages ⎈ Handouts with Questions for Each Group ⎈ Pages for Notes ⎈ Handouts with Comprehensive Lists of Web Links ⎈ Diary Covers and Pages ⎈ Common Core Standards I REMEMBERsitting in history class, as a student, and being bored out of my mind. Tribute to: 9/11, Veteran's Day & Memorial Day
Social Studies, History, History: USA, Grade 5, 6, 7,
If you're seeking a way to pay tribute to our fallen soldiers, this Tribute to: 9/11, Veteran's Day & Memorial Day resource is designed to evoke thoughtful contemplation among 5-7th graders about those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. The core of Tribute to: 9/11, Veteran's Day & Memorial Day lies in a PBL 9/11 Web Quest and Photo Journalism activity , fostering collaboration within challenging, exciting, and enjoyable group projects. It is a genuine opportunity for your class to grasp the genuine essence of heroism. John and Joe Vigiano, two heroic brothers - one a police detective, the other a firefighter - lost their lives in the tragedy of 9/11. Though I never had the chance to meet them, their connection to my family through my cousin's wife holds a special place in my heart. As a tribute to them and all who endured great losses on that fateful day, I dedicate this 9/11 activity . The Veteran's Day & Memorial Day activities hold a profound personal significance to me, as they center around a caring, honest, and courageous young man I once taught in 6th grade. Capt. Andrew Pedersen Keel, my former student, made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan, and these activities honor his memory. Above all, my deepest hope is for your students to develop empathy towards those who fought and laid down their lives to safeguard our freedom. Through my Tribute to: 9/11, Veteran's Day & Memorial Day, I aspire to instill a sense of appreciation and understanding in your students for the sacrifices made by these brave individuals. ✔COMMON CORE STANDARDS ✔W.5.1a,W.5.1c,W.5.1d,W.5.2,W.5.2a,W.5.2d,W.5.2e,WHST.6-8.2, WHST.6-8.2a,WHST.6-8.2c, WHST.6-8.2d,WHST.6-8.2e,WHST.6-8.2f,WHST.6-8.4 AS EDUCATORS, we know: ✎ It’s important for our students to remember our veterans. ✎ We don’t want their sacrifices to be forgotten. ✎ Many kids have family members who served. ✎ It’s important to make it real for the students. ✎ PBL helps students better understand the content and retain it longer than the traditional approach. ✎ Collaborating with others helps build character. ✎ PBL helps students better understand the content and retain it longer than the traditional approach. ✎ Collaborating with others helps build character. ✎THIS IS WHAT YOU'LL GET IN 9/11, VETERAN'S DAY & MEMORIAL DAY Bundle✎ ✎911 Collaborative Group Webquest (Photo Journalists) ✎Dedication to the Vigiano Brothers ✎Complete Lesson Plans ✎Note Sheets for 4 Roles ✎Web Pages with Images and Information ✎5W Chart ✎Graphic Organizer ✎Design a Plaque Honoring a First Responder ✎Design a Plaque Honoring a Victim ✎Grading Rubrics ✎Veterans Day & Memorial Day ✎Dedication to Capt. Yep, he was a scooch, a typical boy who questioned everything and wanted to know why we had to do this or that. Obviously, he was a challenge, however, I love kids like that. By the same token, he was an honor student who studied hard and played even harder. In addition, he was a true friend who truly cared about his classmates. Without a doubt, it's exceedingly important to help your students show kindness, empathy and compassion since you never know what the future will bring. Always take the time to get to know them, and let them know how much you care. Oh, in case you’re wondering, I’m still in touch with Andrew's mother, as we've become close friends.
