Desert Biome Activity

Desert Biome Activity
Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Activities

In this activity, students think of animals that live in the desert. I have provided examples to help guide the students in the right direction. For the first page, where students name animals in the desert, you could complete that whole group. Make sure to have some handy to write down yourself if students are struggling to think of some. Students will then pick one animal that can survive in the desert and write down its adaptations. If you have some struggling students, you could guide them in a small group where they all have the same animal and adaptations listed. If you want them to use technology, now is a good time to have them look up adaptations for their chosen animal. You could also have them get together for a few minutes with other students who chose the same animal and have them discuss the adaptations together. Students also need to come up with information on the environment in the desert. Students will draw their animal in the desert. Tell them to make the animal the focus, so it should be drawn big. There are a couple of pages provided. This project can be done altogether in one sitting, or you could do the writing pages one day, and then have students do the drawing another day.

Substitute Checklist for Teachers

Substitute Checklist for Teachers
, Not Grade Specific,

Are you prepared for a substitute? I've been both a substitute and a teacher. I was a substitute over 20 years ago, before having my own classroom. After 17 years in my own classroom, I'm back to subbing, and this checklist was put together based on things I've experienced. Every classroom I enter as a substitute is very different from the last. I've found it difficult to do some things in different classrooms. For example, not every school uses the same kind of technology. I've entered many classrooms where using technology is part of the lesson plans , yet I have no idea how to use it. I've had to rely on students helping me. It could also be as simple as having paper for the substitute to use. I've entered classrooms where I can't find any paper, and the students have no idea where paper is either. It's important as a teacher to know that substitutes encounter many challenges. The biggest is student behavior. If we don't have all of the tools necessary to have a successful day, the students will notice that, and behavior problems will arise even more. This checklist is a good reminder for teachers to make sure when they have a substitute, the day runs as smoothly as possible.

Alphabetical Order

Alphabetical Order
ELA, Writing, Grade 2, 3, 4, Activities

This product is great for 2nd, 3rd, or 4th graders. Students practice the skill of alphabetical order. This is a skill that we often think of with just primary students. But I've found a lot of 3rd graders struggle with this concept. Students practice writing words in ABC order. The pages are organized into 11 different themes to be used throughout the school year. These can be used as practice or for a quick assessment. The themes are: Back to School, Colors, Sports, Vehicles, Holidays, Autumn, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Winter, Christmas, and Summer. Each theme has two different options to complete depending on your students' levels. You could choose to just complete one of these options. OR, you could give one option to some students and the other option to others. OR, you could give the option where the words are separated into 4 categories first. You could complete this whole group, or students could complete it in small groups. At a later time, you could then give the option of all of the words together as an assessment!
