Scientist Jacques Monod - Fact Sheet, Quiz & Interactive Version (PDF & H5P) Jacques Monod – Gene Regulation and the Logic of Life Fact Sheet, Quiz & Interactive Exercises (PDF + H5P) 🧬⚙️ This 45-minute resource introduces students in grades 9–11 to Jacques Monod – a French molecular biologist whose work helped uncover how genes are turned on and off. In many biology classes, students learn what DNA is and how proteins are made. But the question of how cells know which genes to activate – and when – often stays abstract. Monod, together with François Jacob, studied this in bacteria and developed the model of the lac operon. It’s a great example of how cells respond to their environment, and it laid the groundwork for much of what we know about gene regulation today. To make this topic more tangible, I’ve created a compact, ready-to-use lesson that breaks it down into manageable parts. It includes an informational text, a fact sheet, quiz questions with answers, and a creative partner task. The material comes in color and black-and-white versions, plus there’s a digital H5P version. What’s included: A clear, student-friendly text about Jacques Monod and the lac operon A fact sheet to help students sort and retain key information Quiz questions with an answer key – good for review or independent work A task where students design and exchange their own questions in pairs Printable PDF and interactive H5P formats for flexible use 💻 Answer key included ✅ I’ve used this resource during our genetics unit, especially when moving from DNA basics to regulation and gene expression. It also fits well in discussions about how scientific models are developed and tested. The partner task works well in small groups or for homework – depending on your setup. 🚀 Download now and bring the legacy of Jacques Monod into your biology lessons today! 📍 Best wishes, Heike from Lernfitness Did You Know? Social Studies, History, History: USA, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
"Lincoln" is a historical drama film directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 2012. It focuses on the final months of President Abraham Lincoln's life and his efforts to pass the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery in the United States. Here's a summary of the movie: Set during the American Civil War in 1865, "Lincoln" follows President Abraham Lincoln (portrayed by Daniel Day-Lewis) as he strives to secure enough votes in the House of Representatives to pass the Thirteenth Amendment. Lincoln believes that abolishing slavery is crucial for the country's future and wants to ensure its passage before the war ends. Facing opposition from both Democrats and members of his own Republican Party, Lincoln engages in a high-stakes political battle. He assigns Secretary of State William Seward (played by David Strathairn) and three lobbyists, known as the "Three Amigos," to garner support for the amendment. While working to secure the necessary votes, Lincoln also deals with personal and emotional challenges. He faces tension within his family, particularly with his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln (portrayed by Sally Field), and is haunted by the immense loss of life in the war. As the debate over the amendment intensifies, Lincoln faces immense pressure to strike a balance between achieving his political goals and preserving the Union. The film showcases the backroom negotiations, political maneuvering, and the personal struggles of President Lincoln as he fights for the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment. In the end, through skillful persuasion and strategic maneuvering, Lincoln successfully secures the needed votes, and the Thirteenth Amendment is passed by the House of Representatives. The film concludes with Lincoln leaving the White House for Ford's Theatre, where he would be assassinated. "Lincoln" provides a glimpse into the life and character of one of America's most revered presidents, highlighting his political acumen, determination, and moral convictions. It portrays the complexities of the political landscape during a pivotal moment in American history and emphasizes Lincoln's enduring legacy as the leader who ended slavery in the United States. These teacher-generated questions (28 in total) are designed to help students focus in on key information during the movie. This movie guide also comes with Walt Whitman's poem "O Captain! Social Studies, Life Studies, ELA, Economics, Government, Finance, Reading, Reading Comprehension, Writing, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Are you trying to get your high school students interested in economics, social justice, and current events? Why not give them a crash course on the concept of Universal Basic Income. It's an idea that has been floated around for decades, and it is becoming more relevant as income inequality grows and grows in developed countries. This comprehensive lesson includes: Four parts in an easy to use 7 page PDF: First, students will tackle a 2-page reading comprehension passage about Universal Basic Income. This passage teaches the basic history behind this economic idea and how it is supposed to work in theory. Related ideas such as means-tested systems, welfare, and corporate subsidies are included and explained. It is assumed that students have little to no experience with these topics. Next, students will learn new vocabulary by defining twelve important terms including potlatch, trade unions, and inheritance. Then, students will answer eight comprehension questions about the reading passage. This section encourages critical thinking, close reading, and analysis. Finally, students will write a one-paragraph reflection, where they can start to formulate their own personal opinions about the feasibility and fairness of Universal Basic Income. A complete answer key is also included to eliminate any guesswork and make marking a snap. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for high school students in grades 8-12 in social studies, business , or economics classes. It could also be used in high school English classrooms as a non-fiction reading comprehension and vocabulary passage.
