Here's a ready to go lesson to target 6th grade math expressions and equations standards 6EE.A.3 and 6EE.A.4 1) First there is a simple and clear handout that explains to students what equivalent expressions are. There are sample equivalent expressions included and explanations of how to make them using different math techniques (combining like terms, adding and subtracting integers, using the distributive property, and finding a common factor). 2) Next, there are two pages of real life financial scenarios that students need to write equivalent expressions for. For example: "Ryan gets a $25 allowance each week and can earn $5 each time he empties the dishwasher." This could be represented by 25 + 5d which students could then factor to be 5(5 + d). 3) Finally, there is a matching worksheet with two columns of expressions. Students have to match the equivalent ones to solve a very corny riddle. I would assign this for homework after the lesson. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for students in 6th grade math classes to target Common Core State Standards in the 6th grade curriculum . Spring is Here! is a great resource for students to practice alphabetizing words, writing paragraphs, and even illustrating to welcome the spring season! This resource is divided into three activities: a. The first activity is for students to practice alphabetizing within the context of the flowers and spring. There are 14 words to be alphabetized and then to write the number of syllables in each word right next the word. b. The second activity if for students to write a paragraph about spring, using at least 4 words from the list on the first page. c. The third and last activity is for students to illustrate and color the paragraph with a drawing about spring. Students can present their original paragraphs in different ways: Oral presentation, posters, digital slides, brochures, etc. And they also can be required to turn in this resource! This resource Spring is Here! was designed for middle school students, however it can also be used for high schoolers. Students may work independently, in pairs, or in groups. If students work in groups, make sure each student has their part of the research assigned so that everyone does their part in completing the research project. Teach your middle grades students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade all about saving up money for large purchases and help them practice a variety of intermediate math skills: using ratio tables, graphing, completing operations with large numbers, using percentages , and more! This middle school financial literacy & budgeting lesson has six ready-to-use worksheets to teach your class how to develop savings goals and save their money for life's big-ticket items. How to Use: Print 5 or 6 worksheets for each student. Go through the information on the first page and give your students time to complete the vocabulary definitions (budget, credit card, loan, and interest). Students will then research an item of their choice (between $200 to $300). They will practice calculating the sales tax for it. On the second page, students will complete a simple ratio table and the included graph to calculate how many hours of work will be required to pay for their item. They will calculate how many weeks of work this will take based on how much they work each week. On the third and fourth pages, students will complete similar activities for even larger savings goals: a new car and a down payment for a home.
